Trump says he is naming Fox News host and former judge Jeanine Pirro as top federal prosecutor in DC

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Thursday that he is naming Fox News host Jeanine Pirro, a former county prosecutor and elected judge, to be the top federal prosecutor for the nation’s capital after abandoning his first pick for the job.

Pirro, who joined Fox News in 2006, cohosts the network’s show “The Five” on weekday evenings. She was elected as a judge in New York’s Westchester County Court in 1990 before serving three terms as the county’s elected district attorney.

Trump tapped Pirro to at least temporarily lead the nation’s largest U.S. Attorney’s office after pulling his nomination of conservative activist Ed Martin Jr. for the position earlier Thursday. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he was naming Pirro as the interim U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C., but didn’t indicate whether he would nominate her for the Senate-confirmed position on a more permanent basis.

“Jeanine is incredibly well qualified for this position, and is considered one of the Top District Attorneys in the History of the State of New York. She is in a class by herself,” Trump wrote.

Trump withdrew Martin from consideration after a key Republican senator said he could not support Martin for the job due to his defense of rioters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

The Trump administration plans to bring white Afrikaners from South Africa to the United States as refugees starting next week after saying they are "victims of unjust racial discrimination."

The arrival of more than two dozen Afrikaners, likely on Monday, comes as the administration has suspended most refugee resettlement programs.

"What’s happening in South Africa fits the textbook definition of why the refugee program was created," Stephen Miller told reporters on Friday. "This is persecution based on a protected characteristic — in this case...

Over a dozen largely Democratic states are suing President Trump's administration over his efforts to fast-track energy projects, saying the administration is bypassing environmental protection laws.

Mr. Trump issued an executive order declaring a "national energy emergency" on the first day of his presidency — part of Mr. Trump's push to expand U.S. oil and gas production. The order urges oil and gas expansion through federal use of eminent domain and the Defense Production Act, which allows the government to use private land and resources to...

Top Trump adviser Stephen Miller told reporters Friday that the administration is "looking at" ways to end due process protections for unauthorized immigrants who are in the country.

"The Constitution is clear, and that of course is the supreme law of the land, that the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus can be suspended at a time of invasion. So I would say that’s an action we’re actively looking at," Miller said in the White House driveway.

"A lot of it depends on whether the courts do the right thing or not," Miller said.

The Trump administration is "actively looking at" the possibility of suspending the writ of habeas corpus to handle people the administration says aren't in the country legally, White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller said Friday.

A writ of habeas corpus requires authorities to produce in court an individual they are holding and justify their confinement. Article I of the Constitution says the "privilege of the writ of habeas corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in cases of rebellion or invasion the public safety may require it."...

Why the U.S-U.K. trade deal may not be as good as it sounds

President Trump on Thursday hailed his new trade pact with the U.K. as a "maxed out deal" that will serve as a template for agreements with other nations. But some experts are taking a dimmer view, noting that the U.K. agreement suggests high tariffs are set to remain in place for the long term.

Although the deal with Britain offers some concessions, a 10% tariff remains in place on U.K. imports. Mr. Trump unveiled that baseline levy, which serves more broadly as a minimum import tax on other nations, as part of his April 2 "Liberation Day"...

Washington — Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Congressional leaders Friday that the federal government could be unable to pay its bills as soon as August if Congress doesn't act, urging lawmakers to address the debt limit by mid July.

In a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, Bessent said after reviewing April tax filings, "there is reasonable probability that the federal government's cash and extraordinary measure will be exhausted in August," noting that Congress is scheduled to be in recess.

"Therefore, I respectfully urge Congress to...

The order was sent Friday to leadership and is the latest step in the Trump administration's broad effort to purge so-called diversity, equity and inclusion content from federal agencies.

"The Department's instructional materials should be mission-focused and not promote divisive concepts and gender ideology," Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement.
