Oh, but he's only joking - well, maybe, so they say. Or sort of joking with Canada, and maybe not joking with Greenland - saying that "ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity" doesn't sound like a joke . . . and um, not sure about what the about Panama Canal thing is?

To be clear, I'm not an optimist on any of this. Just clutching at a possibility.

The alternative to what I posted above is that the ignorance and defiance already run too deep, and Republicans will either be forced down with the ship, or enticed on promises of selfish gain.

If economic turmoil mounts, I worry things could be very ugly in the U.S. by summer.

Selling this whole agenda akin to what Americans did ( endured some economic suffering during WWII ) is what will bite them.

We arent at "war" with anyone. We were ALL doing just fine, both individually and collectively as a country. Deficit was always going to be there unless we increased taxes. Period, end of story. There were dozens of ways to attack the deficit, but decimating our own economy is cutting off our noses to spite our faces.

So i am with you on holding out SOME hope that folks will wake the !@#!# up and see what is happening to their retirement/wage deflation.

Todays market reaction is simply a precursor. We havent even hit earnings season/corporate forecasts yet. Thats the NEXT shoe to drop.

And companies simply cannot accurately forecast anything because NO ONE KNOWS when this economic agenda storm ends. ( tariffs etc )

to your point- Rand Paul sees it

I'm not making predictions but I do think there is a chance, slight as it might be, that Republicans in congress will be forced to push back more against Trump. If analysts are right about the devastating effects of his economic agenda, the pain is going to intensify for people very quickly, and Republicans don't have anywhere to hide on these policies. Telling people they have to suffer for the good of the country isn't going to buy policymakers a lot of time. I believe there is a tipping point here where people decide they can't take anymore. People too often ignore the margins until the consequences come banging on their own door.

Well put, I agree.....to pose an analogy,

It's very likely/almost surely (in today's political environment I take zero for granted) Trump's last term.....but many of those R's will have to live with the damage done to the folks they are supposed to represent.....and the ones with half a brain realize it doesn't bode well for them in the future (retaining their power)......so.....

My hope is that at least some of the rats may be considering that jump......

The Danish prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, has put on a show of unity with Greenlandic leaders in her first visit to the Arctic island since Donald Trump’s renewed threats to acquire the territory, saying that when Greenland is in a “difficult situation” so too are Denmark and Europe.

On Wednesday, Frederiksen said: “When Greenland is in a difficult situation, the kingdom of Denmark and Europe are also in a difficult situation.

“Regardless of what discussions we may have down the road about our commonwealth, it is clear that with the pressure from the Americans on Greenland in relation to sovereignty, borders and the future, we must stand together.”

In a clear signal to Trump, who has repeatedly said he wants to gain control of the autonomous territory, which is part of the kingdom of Denmark, and has not ruled out military or economic force to do so, she said: “The USA will not take over Greenland. Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders and the USA will not take over Greenland. And that is, of course, also the message that we will say collectively over the next few days.”

On social media she posted a picture of herself alongside the incoming and outgoing leaders, with the message: “Cooperation. Equality. Security.”

Have a voice? How about put your gd foot down and say enough is enough?

Yep.

As is pointed out in the article, it’s unlikely to pass but this doesn’t even happen if Republicans aren’t growing concerned and feeling pressure.

Their complicity and capitulation are to blame for getting us to this point.

or they could just be performative- they see how that works well for Trump. Just giving a performance to appear to be doing something....

but the flip side is these folks dont run on votes from an entire country, so if they are in an area that is getting hit harder than most, then it may not be a performance, rather an attempt to keep job. lol

In the sense that it isn’t likely to matter, it can be categorized that way, but this wouldn’t happen if there weren’t growing concerns. Challenging Trump isn’t something these cowards take lightly.

He must be getting call from businesses/donors in Texas. That's the only think that I think might move him in some way to say that.

Has to be.

Texas republicans have been riding the wave of the state economy for years. If that suffers, their personal ambitions go down with the house of cards.
