Is there a trade deal with China? Is it really a deal or just a pull-back to status quo ante? Is Trump advancing US interests in this well-executed trade battle plan or was this poorly conceived from the start . . . and harmful?

I think the jury's still out, but I haven't seen that the Chinese are offering much in compromise - and it's not even clear if there's going to be an agreement. But it's clear they are working on something and I'm sure Trump will sell it as the greatest trade deal ever. The proof will be in the details.

Holidaymakers in countries hit the hardest by Donald Trump’s trade tariffs are taking the US off their list for trips abroad, according to online travel booking data.

Findings from the hotel search site Trivago also suggest that UK and US travellers are increasingly choosing domestic holidays amid concerns over an uncertain economy.

The company has seen double-digit percentage declines in bookings to the US from travellers based in Japan, Canada and Mexico. The latter two countries were the first on Trump’s tariff hitlist when he announced tariffs of 25% on 1 February.

Canadians in particular were incensed at Trump’s repeated suggestions that its northern neighbour would be better off annexed as the 51st state of the US.

According to Trivago’s findings, which were shared with PA Media, demand among Germans was also “down heavily”, with hotel bookings in the US showing a single-digit percentage decline.

Germany is the largest economy in the EU, which Trump has repeatedly threatened with increased tariffs, most recently saying on Sunday he had “paused” a 50% tax he intended to introduce next month.

There has not been a significant change in the numbers of UK holidaymakers travelling to the US. The UK has so far faced some of the lightest tariffs globally and last month struck a “breakthrough” trade deal with the US.

Businesses operating in its $2.6tn tourism industry are becoming increasingly concerned about a “Trump slump” due to the turmoil the president’s tariff war is causing on the global economy.

Last month, the federal government’s National Travel and Tourism Office released preliminary figures showing visits to the US from overseas fell by 11.6% in March compared with the same month last year.……..

If Trump said she called then I don’t believe him.

Here is what stands out - Trump, by his very nature, requires any sort of negotiation to be contentious.

Ursula is telling everyone just how impactful the US/EU relationship is.

All he needed to do was pick up the phone and start the conversation. Instead, he issues some threat about 50% tariffs, as if he would ever follow thru, gets a call, delays for negotiations and claims victory. His core supporters see this as winning.

Everything he does is performative ( for optics ). Its not genuine nor sincere. Its flighty and easily manipulated as seen here by a simple phone call.

And remember, Trump isnt negotiating, his crack team of Lutnik, Bessent and whomever else wants to be the fall guy are the ones in talks. Its why there is only 1 deal ( UK which when you read the details is not at all far off from where we were April 1 lol ) and 1 deal only. No one knows what the hell they are doing or why. Its just to perform for Trump to give him the optics for his core supporters to amplify his "winning".

EU is our ally. There is absolutely no reason to threaten 50% tariff other than to "look tough". Which is all he is doing. The rest of the world understands this and operates within that strategy and use that to their advantage.

    lol

Nicholas Gilbert, who tends 1,400 cows at his dairy farm in Potsdam, close to the Canada border, told The Atlantic that a recent order of livestock feed cost him $2,200 extra due to tariffs. The feed came from Ontario, and he mistakenly believed his supplier at the Canadian mill would cover the difference.
“I’m not even sure it’s legal! We contracted for the price on delivery,” he told the magazine. “If your price of fuel goes up or your truck breaks down, that’s not my problem! That’s what the contract’s for.”
    Narrator:
But the tariff was not only legal, it’s his responsibility to pay it. Tariffs are paid by domestic importers, not foreign exporters, despite Trump’s frequent claims otherwise.
    FAFO stage:
And according to The Atlantic, Adon Farms is doubly stuck with the added cost because the price of the milk Gilbert sells is set by a local co-op and there are no U.S. suppliers nearby. Buying feed somewhere else would be more expensive, he said.

sorry aint buying this " i had no idea" line from all these "business people"

do they not have at least ONE person ( be it accountant, advisor someone ) in their circle to explain to them simple economics? Shoot, farmers know supply and demand issues, contractual obligations, foreign exchange - so they must know tariffs.

this whole "woe is me" schtick is old. If you dont know how tariffs affect your business when your business relies on IMPORTED GOODS, then maybe you shouldnt be in business.

But then again, that may be the entire point of all this.
