Some migrants were told they’d be sent to Libya, attorneys say as they try to block the deportations

By REBECCA SANTANA, LINDSAY WHITEHURST and SAMY MAGDY
Updated 6:53 PM CDT, May 7, 2025

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. authorities informed some migrants of plans to deport them to Libya, a country they are not from and that has a history of human rights violations, attorneys said Wednesday. A judge said they can’t be deported without a chance to challenge such a move in court.

The legal scramble comes as the Trump administration is pushing forward with plans to carry out mass deportations, including efforts to send migrants to a country where they are not a citizen. The most controversial example of so-called third-country removals has been sending Venezuelans to a notorious El Salvador prison.

Sending deportees to Libya, a country with a documented history of migrant abuse, would mark a major escalation of the administration’s push for third countries to take in people being removed from the United States.

A U.S. official said earlier Wednesday there were plans to fly migrants to Libya on a military plane but did not have details on the timing of the C-17 flight. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss military operations.

Immigration attorneys say some of their clients, including people from Vietnam, Laos and the Philippines, were told by immigration enforcement agents that they were going to be deported to Libya. Some were told they were going to Saudi Arabia, they said. ...

The head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency was fired Thursday morning, three U.S. officials with direct knowledge confirmed to CBS News — after the leader appeared to publicly break with the Trump administration on whether to eliminate the nation's disaster relief agency.

Cameron Hamilton, FEMA's acting administrator, departs the nation's disaster relief agency roughly three weeks before the start of the Atlantic hurricane season and as Congress reviews the Trump administration's proposal to slash FEMA's budget, nixing $646 million in...

Washington — The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Thursday to clear the way for it to end a program that allowed more than 500,000 Cubans, Nicaraguans, Haitians and Venezuelans to temporarily live and work in the United States.

The request for emergency relief arose from a case challenging Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's decision to revoke a grant of parole that had been extended by the Biden administration to migrants from the four countries through a special parole program. The 532,000 people who were temporarily protected...

A pair of hawkish, Trump-supporting Senate Republicans say that any "lasting" Iran nuclear deal would need to be approved by Congress, ideally through a two-thirds majority treaty vote.

But scoring a two-thirds majority in the Senate for treaty ratification would require Iran to fulfill a series of steep demands. In addition to getting rid of all of its enriched uranium and centrifuges, GOP lawmakers say it would need to dismantle its ballistic missile program and cease all support for terrorist groups across the Middle East.

Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts used a public appearance Wednesday to stress the importance of an independent judiciary, doubling down on defense of the courts under fire by President Donald Trump and his allies, who have accused so-called "activist judges" of overstepping their bounds.

Asked during a fireside chat event in Buffalo, New York, about judicial independence, Roberts responded in no uncertain terms that the role of the federal courts is to "decide cases, but in the course of that, check the excesses of Congress or the...

The big announcement that President Trump teased earlier this week in the Oval Office is a "most favored nation" plan to cut Medicare drug prices, sources told CBS News.

The Trump administration previously sought to implement the "most favored nation" idea during Mr. Trump's first term, tying some high-cost Medicare drugs administered by health care providers to "the lowest price that drug manufacturers receive in other countries."

Trump said in the Oval Office on Tuesday that in the coming days, he'd reveal "a truly earth-shattering and positive...

Known as the GENIUS Act, the legislation would create a regulatory framework for stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency tied to the value of an asset like the U.S. dollar. The measure advanced out of the Senate Banking Committee with bipartisan support in March, but has since lost Democratic support amid concerns...
