At meeting with Trump, Zelenskyy will seek security assurances against future Russian aggression

WASHINGTON (AP) — Ukraine’s leader will meet with President Donald Trump in Washington on Friday at a pivotal moment for his country, one that hinges on whether he can persuade Trump to provide some form of U.S. backing for Ukraine’s security against any future Russian aggression.

During his trip to Washington, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s delegation is expected to sign a landmark economic agreement with the U.S. aimed at financing the reconstruction of war-damaged Ukraine, a deal that would closely tie the two countries together for years to come.

Though the deal, which is seen as a step toward ending the three-year war, references the importance of Ukraine’s security, it leaves that to a separate agreement to be discussed between the two leaders — talks that are likely to commence Friday.

As Ukrainian forces hold out against slow but steady advances by Russia’s larger and better-equipped army, leaders in Kyiv have pushed to ensure a potential U.S.-brokered peace plan would include guarantees for the country’s future security.

Many Ukrainians fear that a hastily negotiated peace — especially one that makes too many concessions to Russian demands — would allow Moscow to rearm and consolidate its forces for a future invasion after current hostilities cease.

For Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, opportunity didn't come without a struggle.

"To anyone who believes that opportunity ought not come with headwinds, I don't know where you live, but it ain't reality," the 59-year-old mused to a crowd on a recent afternoon overlooking the U.S. Capitol.

Raised by a single mother in North Charleston, Scott described being plagued by low self-esteem after failing several courses in high school, including civics. He credits his faith for a reversal in political fortune.

Scott is the longest-serving Black senator...

Iowa Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a bill on Friday that removes protections for transgender people in the state’s civil rights code.

While not every state has protections for transgender people, Iowa Democrats added them to the civil rights code in 2007.

Iowa is the first state to remove gender identity protection from its state civil rights code.

The new law follows President Donald Trump's executive orders only recognizing two sexes, restricting sex change operations and restricting trans people in the military, as well as state...

When Navyn Salem received a letter Wednesday terminating the federal government's contract with her Rhode Island company Edesia, she halted its production line, which makes a life-saving paste for severely malnourished babies.

A day later she received an email, just a few short sentences, rescinding the contract's termination.

The reversal failed to put her mind at ease.

"This is what our everyday looks like. The government is in a state of chaos," Salem said. "And the way that we see that is 24 hours ago, we had a contract terminated, and 10...

European allies were quick to stand up for Ukraine after President Trump and Vice President JD Vance openly berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a sharply contentious Oval Office meeting Friday.

Zelenskyy and his Ukrainian team were told to leave the White House earlier than planned Friday and an important minerals agreement went unsigned, a White House official said, after a heated exchange in which Mr. Trump and Vance accused Zelenskyy of being insufficiently grateful for U.S. support. The president told Zelenskyy he's "gambling...

Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations came to a screeching halt Friday after an Oval Office meeting between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy erupted in anger.

The world is now left wondering where negotiations go from here and whether the two world leaders can repair their relationship enough for the U.S. to broker peace. Some say Europe may need to step up and get involved to help end the hostilities, while others think Zelenskyy either needs to do major damage control or step down.
