Some migrants were told they’d be sent to Libya, attorneys say as they try to block the deportations

By REBECCA SANTANA, LINDSAY WHITEHURST and SAMY MAGDY
Updated 6:53 PM CDT, May 7, 2025

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. authorities informed some migrants of plans to deport them to Libya, a country they are not from and that has a history of human rights violations, attorneys said Wednesday. A judge said they can’t be deported without a chance to challenge such a move in court.

The legal scramble comes as the Trump administration is pushing forward with plans to carry out mass deportations, including efforts to send migrants to a country where they are not a citizen. The most controversial example of so-called third-country removals has been sending Venezuelans to a notorious El Salvador prison.

Sending deportees to Libya, a country with a documented history of migrant abuse, would mark a major escalation of the administration’s push for third countries to take in people being removed from the United States.

A U.S. official said earlier Wednesday there were plans to fly migrants to Libya on a military plane but did not have details on the timing of the C-17 flight. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss military operations.

Immigration attorneys say some of their clients, including people from Vietnam, Laos and the Philippines, were told by immigration enforcement agents that they were going to be deported to Libya. Some were told they were going to Saudi Arabia, they said. ...

Prevost — is registered to vote in the Chicago suburb of New Lenox, Ill., and has a mixed voting history of participating in primaries for both parties, according to voting records shared with CBS News and data from the Illinois State Board of Elections.

There is no party registration in Illinois, but to vote in a primary you have to choose a party's ballot to vote on. Prevost...

The Pentagon will immediately begin moving as many as 1,000 openly identifying transgender service members out of the military and give others 30 days to self-identify, under a new directive issued Thursday.

Buoyed by Tuesday’s Supreme Court decision allowing the Trump administration to enforce a ban on transgender individuals in the military, the Defense Department will then begin going through medical records to identify others who haven’t come forward.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who issued the latest memo, made his views clear after the...

Former Vice President Mike Pence has a message for his old boss.

Pence is urging President Donald Trump, under whom he served as vice president in Trump's first administration, not to raise the tax rate on wealthy Americans.

Trump's 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the signature domestic achievement of his first White House term, is scheduled to expire this year if it's not extended by Congress.

The Trump White House and some congressional Republicans for weeks have mulled letting the tax reductions on the wealthy sunset as a way to pay for the rest of...

The Department of Health and Human Services has decided to effectively block the payout of overdue bonuses to many of its laid-off employees, multiple health officials say. The bonuses were tied to high performance by the workers last year, before they were cut from the department.

"If the savings from the layoffs were pennies from the HHS budget, this is hundredths of a penny," one current federal health agency employee said of the move.

While bonus payments usually go out in April to high-performing federal employees, the department had stalled...

Former President Joe Biden said Thursday he takes some responsibility for President Trump's election victory last year, but broadly defended his record and his late departure from the campaign.

In an interview with "The View," the former president was asked if he takes any responsibility for "not hearing" voters' concerns on immigration or inflation, or for Mr. Trump's 2024 win over former Vice President Kamala Harris.

"Yes, I do," Biden said. "Because look, I was in charge and he won, so I take responsibility."

Biden went on to defend his record...

Federal judges ruled Thursday that Alabama intentionally diluted the voting strength of Black residents when it drew congressional lines, and said the state must continue using a court-ordered map that led to the election of the state's second Black congressman.

A three-judge panel permanently blocked Alabama from using a state-drawn map that they said flouted their directive to draw a plan that was fair to Black voters. The decision was not a surprise because the panel ruled against the state twice previously and put a new map in place for last...

Before becoming Pope Leo XVI, Cardinal Robert Prevost occasionally posted on social media, including some messages that appeared to be critical of President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance and their worldview.

His most recent activity on X came in mid-April, when he shared a post on his...

A former top aide in President Donald Trump's first administration is arguing that Republicans raising taxes on wealthy Americans "makes no sense."

"Raising taxes on America's highest earners and biggest job creators makes no sense. I don't understand why there are some inside the current...

The University of California, Los Angeles, medical school was hit with a class-action lawsuit on Thursday for reportedly still employing a race-based admissions process despite a 2023 Supreme Court ruling that race-based programs for college admissions are unconstitutional, Fox News Digital has learned.

"UCLA’s Geffen School of Medicine has continually treated the Students for Fair Admissions ruling as a recommendation, rather than a binding law handed down by the highest court in the land," Dr. Stanley Goldfarb, chair of Do No Harm, told Fox News...
