This election nonsense by Trump may end up splitting up the Republican Party. I just don’t see how the one third (?) who are principled conservatives can stay in the same party with Trump sycophants who are willing to sign onto the TX Supreme Court case.

We also saw the alt right types chanting “destroy the GOP” in Washington today because they didn’t keep Trump in power. I think the Q types will also hold the same ill will toward the traditional Republican Party. In fact its quite possible that all the voters who are really in a Trump personality cult will also blame the GOP for his loss. It’s only a matter of time IMO before Trump himself gets around to blaming the GOP.

There is some discussion of this on Twitter. What do you all think?

I've got to say...seeing the video of a former Republican Senator like David Perdue tell a shameless lie about the 2020 election at the opening of his debate with Brian Kemp last weekend might have been the scariest video I've ever seen from ANY politician, including Donald Trump.

The way Perdue said it, so matter-of-factly, as if it were really the truth. It was just terrifying to watch. We are so close to becoming Nazi Germany.

From Eugene Robinson in the Washington Post. --

The Democratic Party can be messy, disorganized, clumsy, starry-eyed and overly wonkish, prone to showing up at a political knife fight with a sheaf of briefing books. However, right now, the Democrats are the nation’s only hope for getting our democracy back on the rails. My personal views are obviously on the progressive side, but I believe journalists must stand, above all else, for truth, no matter where on the political spectrum it comes from. The Republican Party no longer acts as if truth matters.

And this state of affairs can’t be blamed entirely on Trump. Republican elected officials have a choice and are choosing to lie. Voters must choose to send the liars home.

We are entering the arena of revenge politics
    ========================

During the Trump years, the GOP kept its eyes on the prize. Republican politicians seemed willing to overlook their standard-bearer’s nest-feathering and political shakedowns.

They shunted aside their professed devotion to free trade, free speech, low deficits and family values, all in pursuit of a single goal: tax cuts.

Or, so I and other pundits surmised at the time.
Today, however, tax cuts no longer appear to be the GOP’s top priority.

Recent events in Florida suggest Republicans have made room in their hearts — and their policy agenda — for an even higher objective: the culture wars…….

These counties are expected to inherit Reedy Creek’s debt obligations and will have to cover the cost of the $163 million the company has been paying annually to fund those public services.

Orange County’s tax collector has said he expects property taxes would need to rise 20 to 25 percent to foot the bill.

In other words: DeSantis has decided to raise taxes on regular Floridians in order to duke it out with Mickey Mouse.

Some conservatives are cheering on the Florida pols. Fox News anchors and right-wing think-tankers have urged more Republican policymakers nationwide to follow DeSantis’s example and use state power to crush political enemies.

This, of course, contradicts their longtime aversion to Big Government and to having politicians — or anything other than free markets — choose “winners and losers.”

Perhaps more significantly, it is a betrayal of their long-standing message to voters: low taxes über alles.

Maybe the GOP has proved more flexible this time around because of who will pay the cost of their anti-Disney crusade. (Orange and Osceola counties are heavily Democratic.)…..

Republican hypocrisy laid bare. Either they never believed in what they said, or power has corrupted them absolutely. Either way, Republicans do not deserve anywhere near public service. They aren’t interested in helping anyone.

They haven't been since Reagan. That's the whole point. Promise bad government, then deliver.

Thom Hartmann talks about the two Santa Claus system. When Republicans are in power then deficits don’t matter. They cut taxes and keep spending. When Democrats are in power Republicans scream about deficits and demand spending cuts.

Oh, and btw? Flock Elon Musk.

I do think Joe Manchin is a serious person, who does what he thinks is best. I don’t agree with him on lots of issues, but we could do worse. Lately that’s a really low bar though. I do think Biden is doing better than he gets credit for, especially foreign policy.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I'd be perfectly fine with Manchin as President though I doubt he stands much of a chance of winning the Democratic primary. He certainly has his issues with taking graft (hardly rare for a politician) but he seems pretty even keel. However, he doesn't really have much in the way of natural charisma. He or John Bel Edwards would make great general election candidates but would never win the party nomination.

I don't think I would go that far. When it comes to Big Coal, Manchin is the most corrupt politician in the country. He simply does not care about the environment at all.

Not only that, West Virginians pay among the highest electric bills in the country, because of old, inefficient coal-fueled power plants. And West Virginians are already among the poorest citizens in the country. The coal lobby pays Manchin a fortune to keep these old, inefficient plants open.

Rolling Stone had a very good article about Manchin's corruption in West Virginia not too long ago.

Maybe, but they're his constituents. He's a WV Senator, so he's gonna rep West Virginians. I don't think he'd campaign on the same issues as a presidential candidate. He may be the most conservative Democrat in the Senate, but he's still a Democrat and ultimately will support most planks in the party platform if he runs for president. If he's the candidate, I'd vote for him every day of the week over a Trump or similar.

kind of disagree. When even a coal union pleads for him to support the BBB plan, and he's like 'no thanks'...

that leads me to one conclusion: he's not really repping anyone but himself. kind of hard not to think that way when he also owns stock in a coal company he helped found

Well, everyone has their blind spots. I guess this is his.

    Phewwww! Another problem solved!

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt signed a bill Tuesday explicitly prohibiting the use of nonbinary gender markers on state birth certificates, a ban experts say is the first of its kind in the nation.

The bill followed a flap last year over the Oklahoma State Department of Health’s agreement in a civil case allowing a nonbinary option. The birth certificate in that case was issued to an Oklahoma-born Oregon resident who sued after the agency initially refused the request. People who are nonbinary do not identify with traditional male or female gender assignments.
