This election nonsense by Trump may end up splitting up the Republican Party. I just don’t see how the one third (?) who are principled conservatives can stay in the same party with Trump sycophants who are willing to sign onto the TX Supreme Court case.

We also saw the alt right types chanting “destroy the GOP” in Washington today because they didn’t keep Trump in power. I think the Q types will also hold the same ill will toward the traditional Republican Party. In fact its quite possible that all the voters who are really in a Trump personality cult will also blame the GOP for his loss. It’s only a matter of time IMO before Trump himself gets around to blaming the GOP.

There is some discussion of this on Twitter. What do you all think?

If there was any doubt who is the leader of the GOP, this should dispel it. House Republicans are waiting to hear Trump's position on Kevin McCarthy in the wake of new audio after January 6 wherein McCarthy stated he was sick of Trump and would ask him to resign. McCarthy would have been the favorite to be Speaker if the Republicans were to take back the House.

Trump is very much still the leader of the GOP.

Lol, the tweet is gone, but the receipts live on...

Florida math is working as intended.

This thread is a good explainer of what DeSantis just did (with zero pushback from R legislators). This action should be disqualifying for anyone thinking of voting for him for president. It’s classic narcissistic behavior - white hot rage at having someone disagree with him, and scorched earth to try to hurt them regardless of collateral damage.

It should be noted that Disney didn’t even actually oppose his “don’t say gay” bill. They merely stated they didn’t agree with it after it had passed.

Tweet 11 above is the payoff. Disney isn’t saying much yet, because at first glance this looks to be a significant windfall for them. Clownish idiocy from DeSantis.

Can anyone that adheres to staunch Republican values explain to me what is happening in Orlando?

I'm enjoying this whole shirtshow between Florida and Disney, for a few reasons. The first reason is, when you decide to jump into social issues such as the subject of human rights, you better be prepared to defend your actions of doing billions of dollars in business over in China, who has an extremely poor record on human rights, Hong Kong protests plus has Muslim concentration re-education camps. Disney opened that entire can of worms, they've also cut same sex kissing scenes from movies such as Rise of Skywalker to appeal to some Asian/Arabic markets.

Disney are just hypocrites, they only champion this cause in the west because its a safe stance and they use it as a cheap representation marketing gimmick. If Disney's brass really cared about the cause, they would have told those markets to kick rocks and keep the scene in the movie. Keep in mind, every June, Disney hangs a pride flag during pride month and says a bunch of performative BS like every other western corporation who looks to cash in.

The second reason I'm enjoying this is because Disney is a soul sucking corporation that treats their employee's like crap and doesn't even pay livable wages.

They wanna get involved in the business of treating people "right" yet treat their employee's like crap, pay them like crap despite billions in profits. That news story linked above should make people sick. Disney is getting smacked from every angle right now and I love it. I'm not a big fan of DeSantis, he just reeks of "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" Republican when Rent is 2400$ a month and jobs pay 12$ an hour, aint no amount of bootstraps pulling is gonna save you at that point.

Yeah, I don’t care about Disney, but DeSantis isn’t really hurting them much with this stunt. He’s hurting the people of Florida much more than Disney. He obviously either doesn’t give a crap about the people of Florida, or he was too stupid to realize the ramifications for the people of Florida. Maybe both.

At first I was a bit surprised that Trump didn’t go off on McCarthy when the tape came out of him saying Trump should resign. But when I thought about it a little more, I realized Trump just knows that he owns McCarthy. And he must still have some use for him.

So, DeSantis "punishes" Disney by giving them a break on taxes and Florida takes on the Disney debt. Abbott "punishes" Biden by blocking produce at the border that drives up inflation for everyone else.

The Republican governors are good at creating issues that don't need to be solved, and creating solutions that don't address the issue while dealing a lot of collateral damage to the public at large. Quite the resume building they are making for their 2024 runs.

Republican Identity Politics is hurting them hard.

The good news, is that it doesn't take effect until 2023, from what I read (I think), and that gives them time to negotiate with Disney. Seriously, not sure the Governor or State Legislature realize how weak of a hand they have. Those counties will murder them. If my property taxes when up 25% because my Governor got annoyed with a company saying "we don't agree with this".. I mean, seriously?

I didn't vote for him, neither did my best friend, but we've both though he was smart economically for Florida during the Pandemic. This is so freaking stupid.

I like the Free Speech angle. The guy is trying to be a champion of free speech, and literally just punished a company for exercising mild free speech. I'd take it to court.. however, they probably won't, since it's a windfall to them. Umm.. you punished us by taking away our control, but took away our costs...

The problem is that the electorate is stupid and people think they're doing the right thing. Why? Because, at least in Florida, most of the cheerleaders don't live in the counties affected.

I mean, people are really freaking stupid. It really does offend my engineering sensibilities.

South Park nailed this years ago.

    very NSFW language. Sorry.

They accuse others of socialism, yet don’t hesitate to try to regulate corporations over speech?

    interesting take:

Senate Minority Leader Gary Farmer told Insider that DeSantis' public dispute with Disney is taking attention away from other legislative agendas the Florida governor has been putting forth — namely, the new proposed redistricting map that would give the GOP an edge in the state at the expense of Black voters.

"Governor DeSantis' attack on Disney was designed to act as a smokescreen for the much more devious original and singular purpose of this special session, the passage of a racist and unconstitutional redistricting plan," Farmer said.

On March 28, the same day DeSantis signed the state's Parental Rights in Education bill into law, DeSantis vetoed a version of the congressional map approved by state legislators that would have added two Republican seats and subtracted one from the Democrats, according to The New York Times.

On Wednesday, the Florida Senate passed DeSantis' congressional map during a special session that would instead create 20 likely Republican seats and leave eight for Democrats, The Times reported.

"On the same day that this anti-Disney measure passed, the Legislature also rammed through an unconstitutional, unlawful, and racist redistricting plan that slashed Florida's Black representation in Congress in half," Farmer said.

He added: "No one really expects this Reedy Creek dissolution to actually happen, but the threat of sending the rights of Black voters back 50 years into the past is very, very real, that is what we all should be talking about today."

I think his redistricting map runs afoul of the FL state constitution. There is already a lawsuit to block it that I read a short report on. He may think he distracted people, but it didn’t work.

Unfortunately, identify politics is all the GOP has left to effectively market themselves to their base:
