I’m sure much of us are having 2016 flashbacks this morning with a sick feeling to our stomachs..

2 of the last 3 elections Democrats have lost to a far right demagogue

Harris didn’t get close in many states to even Biden’s performance. We could very well lose the Presidency, Senate AND House depending on results the next few days…..

    What went wrong?
    What could’ve been done better?
What can we change in the future to ensure voters are motivated like they were when Obama was elected?

Democrats have no choice but to admit there’s a huge problem with some aspect of their platform— and to do a deep introspection of what’s going wrong..

I don't care if the guy is pro-life or doesn't wear a pride shirt, but if he wants to outlaw abortion or calls me a forking f-gay person for being gay, then I care. Because if they don't respect my rights and existence, why should I care about theirs?

I'm talking more the Joe Rogan's of the world. A fringe supporter of Democrats once, who voted for Bernie but is now endorsing Trump. A socially conserative person, who support(ed) social democracy.

It's implied that they are included. These lists mean "also included" not "only included."
    OMG, THANK YOU!!!!

For a group of people that have a government that was made for them by them, they are so fragile. It's like, the moment attention is paid to others, they feel left out. Sad.

All this elections proves to me is that propaganda works. If Democrats want to compete with Republicans in the current environment, they need to create a separate left wing propaganda media ecosystem where they turn everything Republicans do into they worst thing ever and blame them for everything. Turn simplistic messaging like, "Every time Republicans control the government they turn to economy to shirt." into mantras. Make every negative thing that happens into Republicans fault and distort every piece of news to their advantage. Lie to the American people every chance they get. Ignore all other constituencies and cater only to white men. That's what works in this country.

Of course I'll long have checked out if they go down that road and they will never get my vote. But that's what the plebs in the country need and want, so give them that. That's the only secret sauce to Republicans and Trump.

Honestly, they don’t really need to do all of that. All they need to do is add white men and women to the groups they cater to. It’ll feel dirty, sure, but you gotta do it if you want to win.

I think people on this thread need to start with basic facts:

    1. Inflation was a worldwide thing post covid.
    2. A lot of incubment governments lost: Japan, England, Sweden, Finland, Portugal
    3. Joe Biden was just as unpopular as all of these incubment governments.

If you start with the understanding the trends are bigger then America. We another chapter in a bigger narrative. The questions change.

It's easier to see all of this in hindsight now. It seems obvious, and it always does.

The most obvious question is how do you win a race when your own party is in power, and unpopular? How do run against the incubment adminstration? Al Gore didn't pull it off, and neither did Harris.

All this stuff about gender is misplaced, and half baked. Exiting polling showed Inflation and the economy as the big drivers.
I wouldn’t say the gender issues are misplaced, I would say it’s a significant part of the decision making of voters. The other stuff may or may not reinforce the narrative of gender in their minds. It’s definitely a factor. I’m not sure how big a factor it is, but it’s significant imo.

I don't know that I align with Joe Rogan on any policy or social issue, so it that's who Democrats decide they need to craft their message around and pursue as a voter to win elections, that would mean they're moving away from me. So yeah, that wouldn't be something I'd vote for. But they can try it, and if it works, oh well.

I think gender issue is small, esp in a victory this big. If Kamala lost by 5k votes in PA, I would entertain the idea.

I'm not buying she lost WI because of split ticket misogny. People who will vote for a female senator, but not president.

That kind of thing is dwarfed by economic concerns.

Joe Rogan was at one time pretty much down the line for social democracy. He voted for Bernie. You probably agree with him on some things.

A lot of people used to be that but aren't any more. I agreed with Bernie on a good bit of things, but not everything. So it just depends.

In any case, this isn't 2016 and any talk of Bernie is just wasted breath. It's 9 years later, this country is very different now.

That endorsement happened in 2020 dude. Joe Rogan was a registered Democrat. He went from that to endorsing Trump. It has everything to do with now.

We really need more than 2 viable parties. IMO, the Dems are just Republican-lite anyway. They don't really want to push any truly progressive agenda. In my view these things need to change, not necessarily in this order, for us to actually make progress in the USA:

    1. Get rid of electoral college. We don't need it anymore.
    2. Establish some basic standards to hold public office at the federal level(no felonies...not a rapist...high school diploma...etc)
    3. Overturn citizens United
    4. Establish a reporting standard for news agencies where they must report factual information only
    5. Hold social media sites legally responsible for misinformation and propaganda that permeates on their platforms.
    6. Make the election cycle only a month long...no one can spend 4 years building a cult of personality(Trump campaigning for the last 4 years because he had nothing better to do was a huge reason his base never faltered, IMO)
    7. Term limits for every elected or appointed positions.
    8. reform the voting system to make us EASY to vote. No more 3-4 hour lines to wait. Online or mail in voting
    9. Root out the Russian propaganda machine and eliminate it. We know it's there. It's not a secret.
    10. Justice system reform so that criminal proceedings cannot take 3 years. Get it done with FFS.
    11. Live fact checking any time a politician is talking about anything to anyone.

Sorry, I don't keep to with whatever Joe Rogan is doing or has done.

I mean, you may be right, but my personal anecdotal observations seems to make it clear that young white men by and large refused to vote for Harris because reasons. My 2 boys both didn’t care for Harris. They voted for her, but only because I had to persuade them to go vote. They weren’t excited at all. Their friends, I’d hear them say thing like this election doesn’t resonate with them and they simply checked out. Most were not motivated to vote. If they feel sidelined, it’s not surprising how they responded.

can't disagree with any of these

No, I disagree. It's nothing like the right's propaganda machine. They were able to fabricate a whole "stolen election" out of thin are and sustain it for the last 4 years. The left doesn't have anywhere near the propaganda ability to pull that off.
They all ran with the "stolen election" narrative, sure. But the left wing also has its own propaganda machine, it just happens it's not just as good as the GOP's in keeping the narrative, or too holier than thou to go certain places, the whole "when they go low we go high" BS.

Yeah, in retrospect the Democrats message that we can secure the border but don't have to demonizing immigrants was too unpalatable for a rabid American electorate, even Latino voters. They're eating dogs and cats after all.
    No need to get emotional.
What was the Dems' message around securing the border than went beyond "securing the border"? The message that I got wasn't really about securing the border. It boiled down to spending more money and resources in processing more people to make their entry faster into the country.

I don't know, maybe. Depends on how I feel in 4 years. Every time Democrats seize power and implement progressive policies (like Joe Biden did), the American electorate punishes them for it and votes them out. So ...
That's not what happened here, though.

Yeah I don't know what the new coalition will look like, but it's clear the old one is dead.

As I said, you can include "white" in just about all of those groups, but why can't it be stated? Why is it taboo for the Dems to say "white" in a sentence without the word privilege attached to it?
