Didn't really see a place for this so I thought I would start a thread about all things LGBTQ since this is a pretty hot topic in our culture right now

    https://www.cnbc.com/2021/06/17/sup...y-that-refuses-to-work-with-lgbt-couples.html

    • The Supreme Court on Thursday delivered a unanimous defeat to LGBT couples in a high-profile case over whether Philadelphia could refuse to contract with a Roman Catholic adoption agency that says its religious beliefs prevent it from working with same-sex foster parents.
    • Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in an opinion for a majority of the court that Philadelphia violated the First Amendment by refusing to contract with Catholic Social Services once it learned that the organization would not certify same-sex couples for adoption.

I will admit, I was hopeful for this decision by the SCOTUS but I was surprised by the unanimous decision.

While I don't think there is anything wrong, per se, with same sex couples adopting and raising children (I actually think it is a good thing as it not an abortion) but I also did not want to see the state force a religious institution to bend to a societal norm.

The union can't legally represent the accused if another member files a hostile work environment complaint. We would be required to represent the alleged victim.

    There's no pride anything.

No graffiti of any kind except for the maga crowd's blathering.

    Really?

Pay union dues for twenty years, a co-worker files a complaint that may or may not be valid and under the bus you go, huh?

Do they at least get a refund on their union dues?

Ok, well then obviously they should not have written that. I still doubt your take on it, unless you think that your co-workers think that the daughter is lesbian and they are prejudiced against gays, my take seems more likely.

But I'll let you have the last word, since it is your workplace.

Why quit a job when you can harass a coworker and have your union pay you to do it?

    No.

We follow the law. I couldn't imagine representing somebody who is harassing a coworker and leaving the harassed to fend for themselves.

Wherein Ben Shapiro discloses he can look at someone and discern what their behavior entails. Idiot.

I misunderstood. I thought you meant a worker accused of harrassment not a worker who "is harassing."

Writing “Straight Pride” on someone’s child’s photo would constitute creating a hostile work environment in almost any context.
You came in on the middle of the conversation there brandon. I was asking about the seeming Union policy of not representing a member accused of harassment. I'm just surprised that the mere accusation is enough to disqualify a person from the benefit of representation. I'm wondering how that could even be legal, to be honest.

To answer your question, of course any hostile graffiti directed at a picture of a worker's child would be harassment. As far as I know the original poster I was talking to does not know exactly who that was, so representation would not come into play One Way Or another.

You know why it is easy - or at least not hard - to tell what someone's gender is on a board with an even mix of progs and cons?

Because on those boards people say things like "My wife," or "Mrs. Snark," or "my son has too much of his dad in him." They might say "my husband sells electric cars and he says . . . " or "I fight for women's rights because we've come to far to lose them."

Not just the cons, but the progs, also are upfront about that. Different kinda progressives, I guess.

Sure, sure. A person with a husband could be a man, but they would usually talk about being gay on such a board. If not, you can ask them without being accused of being a vile hater or whatever.

I have to say, if people are going to actually be that upset about being "misgendered," why not put your pronouns in your sig? Don't do it for me, I'm almost Audi, but for the next con who comes along, maybe give them a chance?

    1. This post is fantastic coming from the person who misgendered me based on my screen name which, for the record, comes from a Buffy the Vampire Slayer quote said by a male character about himself.

    2. None of those things are gender specific. Some, as you mentioned, could be the result of a relationship between people of the same gender. Others could be said by anyone regardless of gender.

Forgive me for not being expert on WB Network trivia. Unless you mean the movie.

I did not misgender you only based on your screen name. I'd tell you why I misgendered you, but I'm afraid that would offend you even more.

I believe I said that. Yes, it could be. But, if a poster says "My daughter is more like me than her mom," I can tell that is (most likely) coming from a man, whether you can or not. On the board I am speaking of, if I said, "Yes, my daughter is more like her dad than her mom," and it turned out that the poster speaking of their daughter meant her and her wife's daughter and her wife is mom and she is "mummy," they she would not be angry, she would just laugh at the honest mistake.

What did you think about my idea about posting your pronouns? Many people are wearing their pronouns on pins and such. Are they wrong? Seems like simple courtesy if you are going to get hysterical if someone misgenders you.

I assume it's because you see me as fitting some gender-based stereotype. Right?

Why would either of two female parents called 'mom' and 'mummy' refer to themselves as 'dad and mom'? The more you post, the less sense you make.

Nobody is getting hysterical. The gaslighting, however, is getting annoying.

Nicest way to put it, sure.

They woudn't. My scenario had me using the term "dad" and the female poster that I had assumed was "dad" telling me she is "mummy," but with humor and without tacking on a personal insult as you did above. Thanks for making my point!

Why can't you just answer a simple question? If you think that it is wrong for people to tell their pronouns, just say so.

Cool. We can add "misogynist" to your list of labels.

My bad. I don't mean this as a personal insult, truly, but sometimes the things you say are worded poorly and make little sense, such as the hypothetical scenario you used above.

Nobody is getting hysterical. Nobody is getting angry. Your insistence that it is happening is, in fact, gaslighting.

I am all for people posting their preferred pronouns. If that were an option on this board, I would use it. If it already is an option, I am unaware of it. The current methods available (changing my screenname or my signature, for example) don't appeal to me as a way to do it because I am very particular about the way things are formatted.

Wait, I thought that labeling was the greatest form of oppression?

You seemed to have understood it the second time you read it. Maybe you read it too fast and jumped to a conclusion based on your preconceived idea of what I would say.

I guess that catchphrase isn't going away.

I agree about the signature. I just changed mine, but I don't usually even see signatures, so I dont' know what's up with that.

I see you are able to change the words under your avatar. That seems like the perfect place for pronouns.

Again, it's your call obviously, but I think that it would a better strategy if you want people to know your gender than waiting for a slip and snarking on them for it.
