2020 Presidential Debate - Round 1 (1 Viewer)

Looks like the next two debates are going to be a waste of time as well.

Trump's goal is to just wreck the thing and it's damn near impossible to stop someone from doing that.
Right. It's a deliberate strategy that's increasingly being applied far more broadly than just here; the rules only apply if they're enforced, enforcement requires escalation, and they're betting - often correctly - that those in the position to escalate won't do so for fear of being seen as partisan, or overreacting. So while a moderator should, obviously, enforce the rules, they'll be reluctant to do so. The risk is that the public ultimately hold them accountable, but that's a risk that some parties are increasingly willing to take, particularly because they think that breaking the conventional rules gives them an edge in framing things to the public in such a way that the public end up not doing so.

That said, I do think there's an easy and obvious way to stop someone doing that in this situation, especially in the current circumstances, but I suspect Trump would never go for it:

You just have the candidates and moderator in different studios, video linked. The candidate is only live when they have their time. They're never being simultaneously broadcast, if they want to respond to each other, they have to do so on their own time. No enforcement for breaking the rules and talking over the other candidate necessary, because they can't in the first place.

You'd lose the ability for the candidates to engage directly with each other of course, but I feel like that'd be a good thing here. Never going to happen though.

Circling back to Ward's 14 year old daughter watching the debate--I would never let my children watch that because they should not believe that it is okay to behave the way the President of the United States does. If they did they would lose all of their friends and be disciplined at school. And our reaction is that Joe Biden didn't clap back epically enough about porn stars, etc. I don't know if it's social media to blame or reality TV or what but there is something truly wrong here.

It’s not the fact that people don’t like him. We’ve seen plenty of evidence, even here, that his supporters just don’t care. It’s the fact that he's a unfettered moron. All Joe Biden has to do is just yield his time to Trump and just point and say, “Really? This is what you morons voted for?”
That would be worse than the deplorables comment. You don't give those folks a rallying call.

I did have a talk with her about how abnormal that was, and not what we should ever expect from those elected to lead our country.

Trump in the debate was like a large pigeon walking around a shirting on everything. Basically how his presidency has been.
I prefer the Seagull Management Technique. Swoop on in, shirt on everything, and swoop out.

that's not what T did, but if you're going to shirt on anything, that's the way to do it.

Well, maybe not come out and say it, but just give the look.
He gave a couple whiskey tango looks.

I mean, I'm a smart arse, so I'd have been like, "ladies and gentlemen, the president of the United States.... So glad you uphold he dignity of office.."

If he would've said that to Trump, I would've absolutely lost it. :ROFLMAO:

He did call him a clown (right?), and to stop your yapping.

    edit: Yup.

"Folks, do you have any idea what this clown is doing?" Biden said. "I'll tell you what, he is not for any help for people needing health care because he has in fact already cost 10 million people their health care that they had from their employers because of his recession."

Trumps single most concern is his "brand". That comes thru ratings and being talked about. His biggest fear is being anonymous.

So civility, morality and the like...the things we try hard to instill in our children as well as ourselves, has no place in his world. It doesnt do what he needs it do.

For over 2 decades now, the biggest shows on television were reality shows. Shows that pitted one against another. Survivor, that one with people living in house together etc etc. IT was always about winning and how do you win? By convincing those around you to follow you, then at the very end, shirt on em, because, after all, I gotta win.

Then you introduce social media, and how do you garner attention/likes? the same way. Being as loud and obnoxious as possible. Everyone now has a soapbox and they are never afraid to use it, regardless of how stupid they look. Because SOMEONE will agree with them. In the end, thats all they ever really wanted. To be accepted thru affirmations.

We are in a time where being civil has no place because our own President cannot fathom this. So that trickles down to his supporters. They conduct themselves in the exact same way. They have to because they never want to return to the margins where they were just 4 years ago.

I agree that Trump’s behavior was ugly, weak, desperate and sickening... But ya gotta give a 14 year old more credit than that.. When i was 14, George HW and Dukakis were running against each other, and i remember being pretty interested ( at first i typed ‘highly interested’, but i dont know if I’d go that far).. so I’d have probably watched last night’;s debate and realized how incredibly screwed we are, and decided that i wanted somehting different, formed opinions about how i might vote to change things once I’m older, etc... I’m pretty sure that debate last night would have been a good thing to watch and experience, and i was not even close to being one of the smartest kids at my school- so it’s not like i was on some higher level than most 14 year old or anything.. Maybe Ward’s daughter and her generation can avoid the disgusting type of ‘leadership’ we have now.

If I was Biden anytime I mentioned a federal agency I would say, "funded by American taxpayers" then give Trump the side eye

I was 11-12 when the Rodney King beating / LA riots happened. I recall a lot of it. I watched a lot of the news. We talked about it.

I think it is important for kids to see this, think about it, and for Adults to hear what children say. From the mouths of babes..
