2020 Presidential Debate - Round 1 (4 Viewers)

Just to make sure everyone is operating from a factual standpoint, Democrats make up a majority of voters and the US population. Disproportionate representation of individual voters in the distribution of both the House and Senate seats is the only reason Republicans ever make up a majority in Congress.

It's a myth that Republicans/conservatives makeup half the country. They are a minority and they are a ever shrinking minority. Trump has actually accelerated their shrinking. The reason his percentage of support has grown in the Republic party is that a lot of the Republicans that can't stand Trump have left the Republican party. The actual number of people supporting Trump has been steadily decreasing since he took office.
    We shall see.

I've seen this play out once before. Not counting any chickens until the eggs are hatched.

So, any undecideds change their minds tonight?

    LMAO

Indeed. I saw some poll prior to tonight that said most people were watching for entertainment and/or to see how their candidate performed. I don't think debates have meant anything in American politics since maybe the 80's.

Yang on CNN made a good point that if Trump is looking for a trajectory change from the debates, the next two won’t have as many viewers because this one was so frustrating to watch.

At a month out, I doubt anyone expects Trump to change trajectories. He is clearly quadrupling down with his base. The selection of Barrett over Lagoa confirmed that to me. With the recent info about his financial troubles I am now fully convinced -- as many speculated -- that his 2016 run was purely to keep his brand alive because he needed the money. However, I'm not sure what to think now: 1) He's repeating 2016 and doesn't necessarily want the job of President because he's already done his marketing for his brand; or 2) he literally will attempt to go full-on dictator should the election not be in his favor. It's hard to tell because he has the emotional intelligence of a six year old.

When Trump went after Biden’s kid the ultimate flex for Biden would have been Joe turning to Melania and asking her how she felt about her husband raw dogging a porn star while she was pregnant.

Biden has flat out said it before. He's just taking an odd tactic to try to not give Trump the talking point...

He could also be sandbagging which is pretty much the opposite of creating a straw man. You bait someone into focusing on an issue that you are strong on. Let Trump spend the next three and half weeks crying about Biden not commenting and at the last minute come out unequivocally and say "no, I will not participate in stacking the Supreme Court."

I think the majority of voters have much higher priorities than whether or not there's an attempt to stack the Supreme Court. A lot of voters may not like the idea, but I don't think it's going to a major motivator as to how they vote. So leave doubt in the mind of voters and let Trump waste time on a low priority issue.

Would it make sense to say I will back whatever the people wants.

The electoral college also over represents the Republican/conservative minority. That's why 2 of the last 3 times a Republican has won the electoral college vote, they have lost the popular vote.

I'm not saying Republicans can't win elections. I'm saying that it's a fact there are less Republican voters than Democratic voters nationwide. And that's after all of the efforts to suppress Democratic voters.

This would appear to be the strategy in the final month. Trump is the subject of an October Surprise every week so the news cycle rapidly shifts from him having to comment on one negative to another without the ability to go on the offensive.

Not that I personally know of, but two Trump voters I know have vowed to not vote for him after seeing the debate tonight -- one of them being my own mom (who I've been leaning on for years to at least not vote for him). So there's that hope, then...

I was wondering if he was going to talk about the 130k payment to Stormy Daniels with the check with Trump's signature on it.

if he were quicker, he'd have used that or something similar when Trump talked about how terrible all the Divorce is.. from the guy with two divorces for younger women, and who paid a stripper for sex while his current wife was pregnant.

but.. I'm also glad Joe didn't go low.

Over the next few days I'll find out what the people I know who are undecided think. Do you genuinely want to know if any of them change their minds? I'll let you know if you are genuinely interested.

I think that's the right answer and frame of mind from an elected representative. It's probably also the best answer from a campaign standpoint, because it lets every voter think he's going to do whatever it is they'd prefer that he do.

I agree. With Trump the "October Surprise" is like an every day "daily special."
