It’s so repulsive to see people cheering for what is basically 80% the same thing as the Holocaust - different end result but otherwise very similar.

Economists have said it would tank the economy and cause inflation - notwithstanding the cost.

Is it going to actually happen or is this Build The Wall 2.0?

You can make the identification of citizens quick and easy.

Just tattoo their proof of citizenship on their right hand or forehead. Problem solved.

They're going to find that those camps that concentrate all of those people into "secure" locations will be prohibitively expensive to maintain. They'll put the healthy ones to work with the promise that hard work will set them free. Those who can't work will be sent away for "medical attention" never to be seen again.

I’d expect to see more of this
    ======================
A female migrant in mental distress was kept in solitary confinement for a month at a Florida detention center, then mocked and leered at by male guards after they strapped her almost naked to a restraint chair, a federal civil rights complaintalleges.

The reported sexual and mental abuse of the detainee, identified solely as Ana, took place at the Baker county detention facility, a rural camp 30 miles west of Jacksonville with a long history of allegations of mistreatment, harassment, retaliation and cruelty to detainees.

The center is operated by the Baker county sheriff’s office under contract with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (Ice), and currently holds about 250 immigrants. It is expected to expand significantly as part of Donald Trump’s plan to detain and deport millions of undocumented immigrants.

The new complaint, plus a whistleblower disclosure from a nurse practitioner at Baker who said she witnessed systemic abuse and neglect, was filed by an alliance of advocacy groups, including the Florida chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Robert F Kennedy Human Rights and the Government Accountability Project.

Among the other allegations are that staff routinely racially and sexually harassed detainees, denied medical care and sanitary products to women, and then falsified records to cover their tracks.

The story of Ana, a 33-year-old victim of human trafficking and domestic violence, was “especially horrific”, the groups said. She was placed in immigration detention in 2023 amid a custody dispute with her husband over their young son.

Ana, who does not speak English, asked for feminine hygiene products while menstruating, and was yelled at and taken to solitary confinement for two days for not complying with commands she did not understand, according to a press release accompanying the complaint.

She said she suffered a mental health episode in a tiny darkened cell after being denied medical treatment for bleeding and vomiting, and damaged a sprinkler in desperation. For that offense, she said, she received an additional 30 days in solitary confinement, during which she had several mental health crises.

In one, she began hitting her head against a wall in distress, and “instead of addressing her mental health emergency, male guards stripped her, strapped her to a restraint chair in a ripped suicide smock that left her breast exposed, and laughed at her”, the statement said.

Baker staff inflicted additional emotional distress during that time by denying her legal counsel, she said, leading her to miss custody hearings for her son, and being told he would be better off without her.……..

Language is probably the most obvious probable cause. If someone has a foreign accent and/or doesn't speak English, it is a very reasonable assertion that they were not born in the U.S. (that's one of the factors MX immigration considers probable cause), and that asking for proper ID is reasonable as well.
An accent might establish probable cause for having been born outside the US, but it most certainly does not establish probable cause of a crime, which is what “probable cause” means.

Also, you’ve forked the entire island of Puerto Rico.

Too many people already think Puerto Ricans aren’t American

Hell, there are people who know that New Mexico is an American state

Collateral damage. But that's not important to the Nazi ... eh MAGA's.

If there's any cosmic justice, hopefully they will at least be Puerto Ricans that voted for Trump. Just so that I can hear them say, "I voted for Trump, but I didn't think this could happen to me." and get a good laugh from it.

My guess is he will carry out some token and widely publicized deportations, and then quit talking about it or claim that it solved the border problem.

He won’t deport 10 million people, I hope. It is disconcerting to hear them proclaim that he will, and that it will include US citizens and legal residents. It is disconcerting to hear that the private prison corporations are gearing up to take on a whole lot of people.

It’s not a bad idea to stock up on shelf stable food - canned goods of all sorts, meats, veggies fruits. Yeah, they’re not as appealing as the fresh or frozen we’re used to, but they will get you through a food crisis if he does go crazy with deportation.
The cost would be astronomical and it’s already warned it would tank the economy and cause higher grocery prices. It can be argued at this point we need mismanagement pain to correct our leadership problems.

It’s likely there will be a high profile program, but the numbers remain in question. No where close to the desired goal. So can we assume the immigrant Latinos as a group are ok with this? My guess is they're mixed. Yet I wonder as an ethnic group did they realize what danger or hassles they set themselves up for? The important thing is that this “danger” (illegals living in the country) was a tool to persude the dummies we are in some kind of danger and that throwing them out will solve some bull shirt problem of them stealing our ‘good’ jobs.

Two decades ago, I admit I was alarmed in Minnesota seeing immigrants possibly illegal Immigrants working on new housing construction jobs, because these jobs used to be decent paying, the ‘stealing jobs from Americans’ argument that likely at the base level today, no longer pays well enough. I’ve come to realize the reality is most of the immigrant jobs are jobs that Americans won’t do.

Yes. a heavy foreign accent or inability to speak English is a reasonable cause to ask for ID.
Also, you’ve forked the entire island of Puerto Rico.
Why would the entire island of Puerto Rico be forked?

Why are people so against producing proper ID? I guess we have a bunch of sovereign citizens on this board.

Not to work camps, but mass detention camps is the fear, because Trump himself hasn't ruled them out.

So you want to put them in the Hyatt before shipping them out?

    The facilities are already there.

Or simply produce a driver's license, resident alien card, or visa?
What's so hard about that? Don't you have a form of ID?

There was an article about a local restaurant owner who said that Ronald Reagan was president the last time a white person applied for a kitchen job and that article was ages ago

Also, and I’ve said this before , for all the demonizing and dehumanizing of the people “stealing American jobs”

There is no such thing as undocumented people 'stealing' American jobs. There are American companies hiring undocumented people to do jobs. I hear precious little demonizing of them or consequences they should face

All that they have to do is take your ID away and now you're undocumented. It's a terrible system but, to some people, that's a feature.

Well compared to Europe the education level of the police officers in the US is very low

In most US states this is what they require

A high school diploma or GED
    18 Years old.
Police academy for 3-8 months followed by 3 month as a training officer

    Compare this to Denmark

    21 years old
At least Junior college or similar education wise
Police Academy for 2 years and 6 month followed by 1 year as a training officer

    Compared to Europe?
    According to the interwebz:
In the UK you can apply to join the police at 17 (but have to wait to be 18).
    Germany, 18.
    France, 18.
    Italy, 18.
    Spain, 18.
    Portugal, 18.
    Belgium, 19.
    Sweden, 18.
    Poland, 18.
Finland, https://poliisi.fi doesn't specify an age, but by the language, I'd say it's 18.
    Greece, 18.

By the age requirements, I am going to assume there aren't many junior college grads in the mix in those countries. And police training periods vary from country to country.

Do you think U.S. officers would be "nicer" if they trained for longer, or were 3 years older?

Or they can just execute you on the spot... plant a knife or other weapon after the fact... or better yet, just dump the bodies in designated mass graves... saves a lot of money on processing and knives, no?

    posted earlier

It's a question of belonging. And if you are asked to produce ID 'someone' thinks you don't, that hurts even if you have the proper ID
    ===========================================================

How is that much different than the cops pulling over a black guy in a nice car in a nice neighborhood?

“Just checking to make sure that this car really belongs to you and that you really belong in this neighborhood. If you have your license and registration what’s the problem?”

    Or stop and frisk?

“Checking just in case you have something illegal on you. If you don’t have anything what’s the problem?”

“Show me your ID, just making sure you really belong in this country. But hey, if you have the proper documents what’s the problem?”

That constant suspicion and constantly justifying your presence, constantly validating your existence wears on your mind, body and soul
    =====================================================

There have been articles about the mental impact/damage of stop and frisk, especially if it happens repeatedly

Read an article (don't know if it was here or EE) black guy got a very expensive luxury car and was pulled over almost weekly. Another guy was pulled over just a couple miles from the dealership after buying it

Well 2.5 years of training beats 3 months any day. Those 2.5 years includes a lot of law and psychology classes as well as training in how to defuse dangerous situations. Denmark is noted for its minimal police-related killings, averaging less than one per year. And yes we have gangs and Immigrants as well and a population of 6.5 Million.

Number of times we'll use this over the next 4 years

Don't know if it's true or not but saw that it takes more time and training to become a licensed hairdresser than a police officer in some departments
