It’s so repulsive to see people cheering for what is basically 80% the same thing as the Holocaust - different end result but otherwise very similar.

Economists have said it would tank the economy and cause inflation - notwithstanding the cost.

Is it going to actually happen or is this Build The Wall 2.0?

Donald Trump probably will not be able to fulfill his stated aim of ending birthright citizenship in the US when he returns to the White House, but it is perhaps more conceivable than during his first term, according to legal experts.

The US constitution guarantees citizenship to anyone born in the country, even if they are the children of undocumented immigrants.

The president-elect said he would eliminate that right during his first term and again recently said during a television interview that he planned to and could use an executive action or would “maybe have to go back to the people”.

The aim comes at the same time as Trump plans to carry out mass deportation of millions of undocumented immigrants during his second term – an ambition that has civil liberties groups and many Democrats bracing for economic and legal chaos and protests.

But if Trump were to try to use executive action to eliminate birthright citizenship, courts would probably strike it down because of language contained in the 14th amendment, according to scholars.

Still, given the conservative majority on the supreme court – and fact that one of the people considered a candidate for the court has argued that the provision does not apply to children of “invading aliens” – it’s not a certainty that birthright citizenship will remain in place, said Amanda Frost, a University of Virginia law professor and expert in immigration and citizenship law.

“At the end of his last presidency, if I was asked, ‘Is this something he can do?’ I would have said, ‘It’s never going to happen; it’s just a talking point,’” Frost said.

“The constitution text and the judicial precedent and very long-standing practice and the purpose of the provision all say, ‘No,’ but at the end of the day, the constitution means what five members of the supreme court say it means.”……

I want illegal aliens deported. Isn't that at all clear by now? Put in camps???????Wow, lol
How do you think deportations actually happen in the real world? TX has already accepted 1200 acres of land close to the border that some officials are wanting to use for a massive detention camp.

From the Guardian, quoting a former ICE official:

“Large-scale arrests will require more space to detain people as they await immigration proceedings. Immigrant rights advocates say there is not enough space in existing bricks-and-mortar facilities for these detentions.

Houser, the former Ice official, told This American Life that detention facilities could lower their standards to house more people, for instance by putting more people into a jail cell than their current policies allow. He said unused warehouses or former department stores could be turned into detention camps.

The federal government will also try to use space in state or local prisons or jails to house people, Lapointe said.

There will be tent cities constructed to temporarily house people. Texas has offered state land to use for deportation facilities. Stephen Miller, Trump’s immigration adviser, told the New York Times in 2023 that single adults would mostly be housed in these tent camps because a legal settlement prevents indefinite detentions of children.

These “soft-sided facilities” could be sources of unrest and unsafe conditions, Houser warned, both for those detained and Ice agents.”

Furthermore - the country of origin has to be willing to accept the deportees. If the country will not cooperate - those camps now become permanent prisons. I don’t think anybody deserves prison time for coming to the US to try to better their family’s lives.

So, say someone has been here for years, are contributing to society, working gainfully, married with US citizen children. You okay with putting them in prison? Sending them away from their family?

So what he is really saying is that adults could be detained indefitely? How long would it take before someone got the idea to put them to work?

I suggest they deport themselves if here illegally.

Then deport Melania and Musk and I'll be right there with you.
Well, I looked it up. Seems like they are BOTH US citizens and not subject to deportation.
Look, I know you wish to make this partisan, but illegal aliens should concern all Americans.

The exploitation of undocumented immigrants should concern all Americans. Industries like construction and agriculture rely heavily on this workforce, and these workers depend on the jobs. Employers do have legal avenues to obtain permits for their workers, but they often refuse to do so. Why? Because legal employment means paying fair wages and providing workers with rights related to hours, rest, and accommodations.

The undocumented status of these employees allows employers to exploit them, using the constant threat of deportation to withhold pay or force them to work long and dangerous hours. This systemic abuse benefits the employers while keeping workers in vulnerable and inhumane conditions, and it highlights a deeper failure in ensuring fair labor practices for all.

One way to avoid it is not to have illegal aliens here, and companies should certainly not be hiring them. Deport the illegals and fine the hell out of the businesses hiring them, maybe even take away their ability to do so through loss of licenses or EINs.

Who is going to pick the crops, build the houses, and work in the factories? As long as employers—even figures like Trump, who has been known to use undocumented labor—see a financial advantage in hiring undocumented workers, this cycle will continue.

When undocumented workers are apprehended, shouldn’t their employers also be arrested? Of course, that rarely happens. At most, employers face a small fine, which is insignificant compared to the money they save by exploiting illegal labor. Notably, nothing in Trump’s plans addresses holding employers accountable. Perhaps that’s because punishing them might hurt his donors.

Americans and others here legally. Why do you want people to work for less--so you can pay lower prices??

Which is why I specifically wrote about punishments for those who hire illegal aliens. Did you miss that?

Americans simply don’t want those jobs. Farming communities across the U.S. are actively asking refugees to relocate because of severe labor shortages. Most Americans aren’t willing to pick crops or do farmwork.

When employers in construction or hospitality get a $2,000 fine but save $100,000 in wages by exploiting undocumented labor, do you think that does anything to discourage them? Especially when they face no real consequences? In fact, they might even benefit financially since their employees could be deported before receiving their pay. This system incentivizes exploitation rather than addressing the root of the issue.

If they came across the southern border, why can’t we send em back that way?

They came here illegally. They shouldn't be citizens to begin with. They got preferential treatment for obvious reasons.

Clearly you think the law doesn't apply to them. The hypocrisy is real.

Did you miss where I stated fine the employers heavily and possible loss of licenses and EINs??

There are farm job allowances made, and have been for a long, long time.

They came here illegally.
Actually, they did NOT come here illegally, and I dare you to prove that nonsense.
Clearly you think the law doesn't apply to them. The hypocrisy is real.
Clearly you are substituting your thoughts for my words and pretending they are mine. I see no point in yakking about legal American citizens any more than I see a point in removing "dreamers'.
