This election nonsense by Trump may end up splitting up the Republican Party. I just don’t see how the one third (?) who are principled conservatives can stay in the same party with Trump sycophants who are willing to sign onto the TX Supreme Court case.

We also saw the alt right types chanting “destroy the GOP” in Washington today because they didn’t keep Trump in power. I think the Q types will also hold the same ill will toward the traditional Republican Party. In fact its quite possible that all the voters who are really in a Trump personality cult will also blame the GOP for his loss. It’s only a matter of time IMO before Trump himself gets around to blaming the GOP.

There is some discussion of this on Twitter. What do you all think?

I sure promise not to "destroy Anerica from within". I also notice that more Democrats than Republicans have a BITTER SPIRIT. You have a Democratic President. You have the majority in the House of Representatives. The country is headed in a more climate sensitive "green" direction. Trump is being exposed week after week as the embarrassing loser that he is....YET YOU ARE STILL BITTER!?🤔
As you have come to see, having a 'majority' in the Senate is basically meaningless when it comes to passing legislation because of the filibuster. I'm not saying the filibuster is a bad thing (I wish it were still in place for judicial nominees), but in today's environment when the GOP is determined to block most bills Democrats put forth, you can hardly blame Democrats for the structural hurdles in government.

As an aside, here's a refreshing view of polls over in the UK:

Keep in mind that the Conservative Party in the UK is mostly comprised of Joe Manchin style Democrats and the Labor Party is mostly Bernie Sanders, it's nice to see a country with a more storied history than the US hasn't drank the Kool-Aid of fundamentalism. We have a couple of people in the UK who know better than myself but my take on the Green Party is that its left of even Labor and Lib Dems are sort of left-leaning libertarians that support some form of state/government services. And keep in mind that all of the major parties in the UK: 1) Are Pro-Choice; and 2) Support the concept of universal healthcare via the NHS. And yet... America... Truly amazing how backwards this country is in those aspects.

Also nice to see a reasonable form of government where acreage of land does not play a factor in relative power.

There is plenty to be thankful for. I wish Democrats (and actually Republicans too) would focus on the positive aspects in life. I am focusing on a person's outlook in life and the manner/style in which they speak to me. THAT is how I am moved to compose my response to a person...skin color is irrelevant. I can be empathetic or sympathetic when appropriate. Of course I often am. Yet I encouraged this gentleman to find a way to be thankful on our country's holiday but he stubbornly dug in deeper regarding his bitterness. If he had said: " I need a surgery but I don't have the funds" I would have responded compassionately. If he had said "I recently lost my job and I am down on my luck" I would have responded compassionately. Yet he chose to attack Republicans saying they are trying to destroy the country from within. Yet I will reflect more on your words and I will try to do better in the future.

Shades of Paul and his constant “Be grateful you have it so much better than your grandparents”

Romney had his chance. He won't get another. Agree?
Probably not, just because the party has moved too far to the right. But it’s not unprecedented to lose a presidential election and then to get another chance down the road — just off the top of my head, Nixon lost in 1960 but won later in 1968.

Is there any indication that Romney would even want a second chance?

Yep.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — New civics training for Florida public school teachers comes with a dose of Christian dogma, some teachers say, and they worry that it also sanitizes history and promotes inaccuracies.

Included in the training is the statement that it is a “misconception” that “the Founders desired strict separation of church and state.”

Other materials included fragments of statements that were “cherry-picked” to present a more conservative view of American history, some attendees said.

In a possible effort to inoculate some Founding Fathers against contemporary political complaints, some slides in a presentation pointed out that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson repudiated slavery; unsaid is that both men held enslaved people and helped worked toward a Constitution that enshrined the practice……..

“We’re unabashedly promoting civics and history that is accurate and that is not trying to push an ideological agenda,” DeSantis said at an event this week.

In Florida, he said, students are “learning the real history, you’re learning the real facts.” DeSantis has signed into law new civics curriculum standards, introduced last year for middle-schoolers, which met with little opposition from teachers, who say they are comprehensive and apolitical.

But the “civics bootcamps” DeSantis launched this summer to instruct teachers on how to implement the curriculum have alarmed many in public schools. Judd said the trainers told teachers, “This is the way you should think.”……..

Colleges too

Viewpoint Diversity Surveys?
=======================
In his efforts to remake higher education in Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed laws that alter the tenure system, remove Florida universities from commonly accepted accreditation practices, and mandate annual “viewpoint diversity surveys” from students and faculty.

DeSantis (R) also pushed through legislation he dubbed the “Stop WOKE Act” that regulates what schools, including universities, and workplaces can teach about race and identity.
The legislation — which went into effect Friday — already faces a legal challenge.

The lawsuit argues that the act violates constitutional rights and would have a dangerous chilling effect on academic freedom. A judge is expected to rule soon on a request by University of Central Florida associate professor Robert Cassanello to block the law.

This week, the judge denied similar requests from other plaintiffs, saying they lacked standing. The state has asked a judge to dismiss the suit.

Cassanello, who teaches classes in civil rights movements, Jim Crow America, and emancipation and Reconstruction argued that the law “restricts his ability to accurately and fully teach these subjects.”

Meanwhile, the board of governors for Florida’s public university system took initial steps Thursday to approve regulations for enforcing the law, with potential penalties including discipline and termination for employees who do not comply.

The law also ties some university funding to compliance.
DeSantis has said he wants to prevent the state’s colleges and universities from becoming “hotbeds for stale ideologies” and from developing “intellectually repressive environments.”………

so about him not running again...

Among those urging Trump to announce soon is Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. Graham said the former president would be blamed for — or credited with — whatever happened in the November elections and suggested that an early announcement would focus Trump’s attention on policy.

“It’s up to him if he runs or not,” Graham said in an interview. “But the key to him being successful is comparing his policy agenda and policy successes with what is going on today.”

Other Republican leaders have sought to dissuade Trump from an early announcement.

Ronna McDaniel, chair of the Republican National Committee, had urged Trump to wait until after the midterms, worried that news about his campaign could derail the party’s midterm messaging. One RNC official noted that when Trump opened a campaign, the party would stop paying his legal bills related to an investigation by the New York attorney general. Still, McDaniel has recently resigned herself to the idea that he will announce before the elections, according to people familiar with the conversations.

You'll forgive me for not being in a "fun" mood these days watching the constitution that I put on a uniform, raised my hand and promised to defend against ALL enemies foreign and DOMESTIC gets shirt on by a party that wraps itself in the flag and passes laws taking away rights from its citizens, some of whom took the same oath as I did.
A party whose leader at the moment dodged military service during wartime, shirt all over a POW, and couldn't tell you anything more about the constitution than he could the bible, and that's zero, even though he was put in office by religious conservatives.

It'll break your heart if you let it. Try not to let it.

The court’s decision — in the case of a conservative who refused to step down from an environmental policy board for more than a year after his term expired — marks another loss for Democratic Gov. Tony Evers as he faces reelection in November. Republicans have worked to reduce Evers’ powers since even before he took office and have refused to confirm many of his appointees. This week’s ruling gives them the ability to block them simply by declining to hold a nomination vote.

Sigh. C’mon Steve, you know better than that. If the Dems completely blow up the filibuster (which I actually think they should) Republicans will repeal or undo anything and everything done by Democrats If they gain majority. My issue with reform is much more specific. If the majority leader in either house refuses to bring legislation or, in the case of the senate, appointees to a vote then that majority leader is automatically removed from the senate and cannot run for federal office for 10 years. In addition, the filibuster, if not completely removed, shall return to a true speaking filibuster. No more “I don’t like something and I just have to say so”. Furthermore the override shall be no more than 55% Or even a simple majority excluding the VP voting.

As for more bitter? The constant bullschlitz over the Big Lie on a state level is dangerous as all get out. The same applies to the religionists on the SCOTUS.

Finally, no, the country is not really going in a green direction. It is fumble-farting around due partially to religionist azzhats and partially to enough wealth not giving a damn what happens down the road so long as they don’t have to pay for it.

Oh, and btw, there are open racists running as Republicans now. That sure ain’t progress and is definitely worth getting angry over.

Interesting. These appointees are not civil servants nor, if I understand correctly, are they like the Postmaster General. Such a ruling should be appealed to the SCOTUS where…oh, never mind.

I actually think DeSantis might be worse than Trump. He wants to micro-manage every person’s life in Florida, down to deciding he knows better than pediatricians what vaccines should be given. He wants to control what teachers say and think, he wants to control what businesses can and cannot do or say within their own companies. Trump didn’t really care about anything but making money and his own press clippings.

This is why people think Dems are spineless. In their efforts to seem 'mature' they're letting Reps go completely hogwild and doing nothing to combat it.

This thread by Kanefield is worth the read. Especially by Steve, because she’s a very level-headed lawyer who knows a lot about government and history. Right now is not the time to think that the R party can be saved, and things can just go back to normal, imo. Over half of the R elected folks are election deniers and willing to subvert voting rights to make sure they stay in power.

You’re completely missing the point. You want people to feel what you feel about America without ever considering why many don’t. I actually admire that he’s made the effort to feel something nostalgic for a country that has given him many reasons not to.

America has an abysmal history of civil rights abuses; literally founded on genocide and built with slave labor. ‘Just be thankful’ is such a grotesquely privileged take when many Americans still feel the pain of racism, millions of women just lost fundamental privacy rights, the LGBTQ+ community is in the crosshairs, and there are strong signals that the backsliding has only begun.

My wife and I live in a state that is set to deny her of her reproductive rights. She’s entrusted to make decisions overseeing a multi-million dollar business but not her own body. We won’t be observing American independence, either.

It’s almost like most Republicans (not all) are like….tone deaf…or in denial…or they feign ignorance on what is really happening now….I hope the party implodes and/or destroys itself from within…..
