We have a running thread about the 2020 Democratic race at large, but 538 is now showing that Bernie Sanders has a nearly 50% chance of carrying a majority of delegates into the Democratic National Convention (with the current runner up being "no one has a majority" at close to 40%). At some point in the near future--maybe as soon as Super Tuesday next week when he wins California--it will be time to acknowledge that Sanders is the probable nominee and there is nothing Biden or Bloomberg or anyone else in the race now can do to stop it. So, what happens then?

I know that the Trump voters will say he's crazy and use that as their excuse for voting for Trump (who they were voting for anyway under any circumstance, let's all be clear and honest about that). But how does everyone else feel about it?

The top tax rate under FDR went from 25% to 94%
Versus slashing for the highest income brackets in a strong economy.
tremendous government spending that had little effect on unemployment
Sounds pretty familiar, actually. Unemployment already at record lows, but we're running massive deficits anyway.
    buying votes with tac dollars
Or buying them with farm dollars.
    corruption through the WPA
    Or corruption through emoluments.
    heavy handed cronyism
    Heh.
    4 term President
There's a fair amount of evidence to suggest that Trump won't be leaving any time soon, reelection or not.
built a massive bureaucracy that he used for his own political benefit
Or removing all competent bureaucrats in favor of political yes-men.
used the IRS against media publishers who opposed him
Or using propaganda to convince everyone that the media is fake news.
    internment camps
    border camps
    his "second bill of rights"
as opposed to shirtting on the Constitution at every turn.

    Bad examples.

I know you think you responded, but you really didn't.

It'd be interesting to see how many folks would call FDR a 'radical, extremist, marxist, communist'. He pedaled the same ideas. But hey, whatever sounds scary and thus strokes the ego more. That feels good, so who cares if it makes sense or not.

    America.... Gotta love it.

FDR "pedaled the same ideas" during the Great Depression and WWII. Very different times, very different scenarios.

Exactly. Great point. The turnout was huge in the suburbs as well as among African Americans. That’s the combo that took back the House in 2018.

Turnout in a place like Virginia was nearly double what it was in 2016.. I know it's hard to believe, but people turned out for Joe Biden in numbers needed to defeat Trump..

Which is another hit at Sanders, who said his campaign would increase turnout for him. That hasn't happened.

Well, he has helped turnout but for the other guy. Moderates are scared of Bernie and there is a fear about losing to Trump. I have no idea how the general will play out but it seems like Sanders and Biden supporters all want to beat Trump. The animosity will need to be tamped down between the two camps if there is going to be a victory for the Dems.

If I had to pick between Biden or Sanders I would have to pick Biden.

Same. As Beach Friends pointed out to me in a previous discussion, Bernie has said some pretty out there things. He's far to the left of most of the country and while he's enthusiastic, he's also pushing for some changes that are beyond what I would want.

Frankly, my main goal is to remove the stench of Trump from our common memory and hopefully see him in prison with his entire corrupt clan, but aside from that just a competent and considered administration who would like to govern would suffice. Someone who has a modicum of respect for those with different opinions, some measure of empathy and enough self restraint to not drool on the jock of every two-bit dictator he crosses paths with would be a bonus.

Trump is a con man and an idiot. There are very few people on the planet less well suited to be POTUS than Trump. Trump is also easily influenced by those who he seeks influence or favors from so at least on some level, Trump is being handled by those with real money and some ties to reality. Bernie really isn't.

I just don't see a guy who struggled to even speak and get his points across on stage against other Democrats doing anything but getting dominated by Trump. Donald is a goon and a fraud and will play that narrative again and again.
