There’s a lot of doubt that Kevin McCarthy will be able to get enough votes to become Speaker. It certainly won’t happen on the first ballot. Already Boboert and MTG are publicly at odds over it.

Maybe this is worth it’s own thread to watch. One person mentioned is Scalise.

I keep seeing that suggestion but never any names as to who that moderate republican would/should be
There are some candidates, like Joyce, from the problem solvers caucus, that would be infinitely better than either Jordan or even Scalise. Just like Democrats vote for Jeffries, they could instead all agree to vote for a moderate Republican, and then would only need about 6 Republicans to join them.

Republicans could elect a new speaker of the House this week. Or they might not. And nobody is holding their breath.
“No one at this point is even remotely close to a majority,” Rep. Kat Cammack (R-Fla.) told The Washington Post on Tuesday about the race between House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio).

“So I think that we’re not just going to be here for a couple extra days. My money says weeks.”

Sure enough, the GOP conference on Wednesday made Scalise its nominee by a narrow margin, setting up a floor battle that could go any number of ways.

Some Jordan supporters say they’ll keep voting for him; some Republicans voted for neither man. And for now Scalise got the support of only about half of his conference.

If Cammack is right that this could take days or weeks, Republicans would only add to already-historic milestones resulting from their internal chaos.

But just how historic? Here’s a look at the numbers and historical facts.

    McCarthy’s unprecedented ouster

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) last week became the first speaker to be removed from office by a vote of the House.
Only once before had the House even voted on a so-called “motion to vacate,” in 1910. And only twice before had such a motion even been filed (the other being against GOP Speaker John A. Boehner last decade).

There is currently debate within the GOP about whether it will continue to allow one member to force such a vote.

But unless it changes the rule, the GOP’s razor-thin majority and an unruly caucus of hard-right members make it entirely possible the motion against McCarthy won’t even be the only one this Congress……

She may regret her efforts to elevate her visibility, lol:

This is a big part of the problem. The non-crazy Rs don’t even exist anymore. They are unable to stand up and take on a leadership position because they have been conditioned to hunker down and pretend to be one of the Trumpers. Anyone who had any integrity or moral backbone is already gone, been gone for years.

David Joyce? No thanks. He is my rep. He voted with Trump 90% of the time and voted against impeaching Trump. Hard pass.

Yeah. To me, a prerequisite for House Speaker is someone who voted against Trump. There aren't many of those. With Cheney and Kinzinger gone, not sure who fits their mold.

Liz Cheney for Speaker. Just throwing it out there.
She's not a Rep tho. Can they elect her as Speaker even though she's not a member of the House? I didn't realize that. I guess I should have caught that when Trump's name was thrown in there.

But if that's a possibility, omg yes please! The Democrats would only need a handful of Rs to vote with them to do it.

They need to chamge that 1 member rule though.

Yes, she can. So can Trump. There's no requirement that the Speaker be an elected member of the House. Trump would face the GOP's conference rule about indictment but they could just ignore that.

I made a topic a while back. Of the 10 that voted to impeach trump, 8 either have either retired, did not seek reelection, or got voted out in favor of a trump supporter

    which leaves 2:

Let’s get one of them, then.
