In keeping with the site's desire to have more conversation based on concepts, ideas and principles, I will be posting a couple of threads in hopes of generating discussion on topics that are relevant no matter who is in office or the news cycle at any point in time.

What are your guiding principles related to immigration? What in your opinion would be the most reasonable plan to reduce illegal immigration? Should legal immigration be limited to those who can assume roles in US society that are in short supply? What steps are necessary for elected representatives to be able to find compromise on these issues?

The stupid here in Texas gets dumber. Yeah, because that will stop them.

Maybe they'll be used to encircle would-be border crossers so Abbott can come strutting into the circle to fight them like a villain in some Road House knock-off.

You know what? Edwin Edwards may have been crooked as hell, but there is no denying the good that man did for the state of Louisiana. I'd take an Edwin Edwards over Greg Abbott any day of the week and twice on Sundays. If there's a Louisiana politician who deserves having a movie made about his life (who hasn't already had one), it's Edwin Edwards, hands down.
Lets not lionize Edwards as some posthumous legendary politician too much, shall we? In terms of one of his re-election campaigns, the only real reason why he got re-elected as Gov. was because his opponent was a virulent, former KKK Grand Dragon David Duke and La. voters didnt really have much a choice in terms of overall quality, content: A admitted, shameless, self-centered crooked politician was far better than electing Duke. Edwards arrogance, crooked feelings and sense of entitlement was disgusting and pathetic and reinforced La. reputation as a toxic, business-unfriendly, impossibly corrupt state who not only shamelessly overlooked corruption, graft, they forking openly celebrated it.

Edwin Edwards was a shameful, pathetic person who's overall political legacy is very mediocre compared to former "titans" State, and federal politicians like Russell Long, Hale Boggs, John Breaux, and John Mckeithen. Edwards, IMHO, was the idiot's dumbed-down version of Huey Long without his charisma, empathy, political skill, saaviness, and maneuverability. But similar to the "Kingfish", Edwards actions, reckless behavior and arrogance essentially created the political enemies who later brought his arse down, which occurred with that crooked, no-bid contract to supposedly build that casino representing by Eddie Debartolo, former SF Niners owner and president.

Don't elevate or re-fashion the late governor Edwards into some saint, pardon the pun, he doesn't deserve it and he shouldn't be remembered for that honor.

Thanks for your opinion. I met the man, have family that knew the man well, some that worked for him in multiple administrations and think he did more in his four terms as governor of this state than any other person has even come close to accomplishing. He filled his pockets but he got shirt done. Period. Full stop. I have a habit of rooting for the bad guys in movies, especially if they're bad guys of the Robinhood fashion. Please enlighten me, point me in the direction of any one person in politics who did more for the state of Louisiana than Edwin Edwards. Bet you'll have a pretty hard time. Also bet you'll be wrong. LOL - without Long's charisma, empathy, political skill, savviness and maneuverability? You are joking, right? He literally oozed all of that shirt and more. He could get away with being the crook he was because he didn't forget what it was like to come from dirt poor Avoyelles Parish and he quite literally served the people of this state who knew that feeling just as well as he did while still being smart, powerful and ultimately rich enough to have the biggest dick in the state Democratic Party for a good, long run. He was crooked as a three dollar bill, everyone knew it, and he was elected to be the governor FOUR FRIGGIN TIMES. Why is that? Because he got more done for the people of the state of Louisiana than any of the people you mentioned and more than most of them combined. Nobody gave two squirts if he quite literally didn't believe in Christ or going to heaven - which he was actually accused of in an attempt to bring him down (total BS, btw) - in the deep south where the Bible is just as, if not more, important than the Constitution, and you actually think he didn't have charisma. He was a good person who didn't have a racist bone in his body during some really tumultuous times for poor, black people in the deep south, and yes, it was absolutely a time where, "Vote for the Crook! It's important!" was that important since the best LA Republicans could produce to run against him was a forking Grand Wizard of the KKK.

His political legacy is far from mediocre. He knew more than anyone: haters gonna hate and he let them (and you) hate him until the day he died a free man. Not prison librarian who helped poor long-timers get their GED, inmate # #03128-095. It amazes me how much it chaps some of y'all's arses that he literally just did what everyone else was doing but did it bigger and better. You know so much about him and what you're talking about that your list of distinguished LA politicians contains Edwards' actual friggin protogé, first ever successor and good friend in LA's 7th, John Breaux.

If you honestly think Edwin Edwards was a dumbed down anything, you know absolutely nothing about the man. You act like he ran against David Duke four times. Stupid people don't openly flaunt their political shenanigans as openly as Edwards did and stay out of jail until they are in their 80's and still die a free man. Hate him for giving the state the reputation it was already hard at work giving itself if you want to. You're acting like he was a lone actor in the scams, kickbacks, bribes, deals, payoffs that were already taking place when he represented LA's 7th Congressional District in the 60's and just kept playing the same game as the rest of LA politicians for his whole political career. Are you related to the Treens or something? Roemers? Those guys really hated succeeding him only to have him come back to beat them four years later - with just as quick of a wit, an even bigger smile and an even more unsatiable desire to win. And he did just that.

Seriously, every single person on your list of distinguished Louisiana politicians did plenty to dirty up LA politics by taking illegal campaign contributions - which, by the way, was ALL that they even could dream of charging him with after his first term - and if they could have gotten away with Edwards ended up ultimately both getting away with and getting caught for, they'd have done it in a New York second. He didn't get convicted because of political enemies or Eddie DeBartolo. He got convicted mainly because Cleo Fields was too stupid for his own good. DeBartolo only thought that admitting that he paid Edwards off would "pay off" for him in Federal Court. He still went to jail too.

I'm not re-fashioning him into anything. The man still had a 40% approval rating just months after getting out of prison. He lionized himself. Don't care how biased I am.

Sorry guys, don't have the source, but this is his profile. He posts a lot about immigration, he doesn’t seem to be just a supporter of the current administration.

So, you're perfectly okay and down with condoning some of his crooked actions as a La. Congressman that hurt this state's dirty-dealing, openly and shamelessly celebrating this state's poor political/national image because "everyone else was doing it" and thats just how business was and is still done. Thats strange coming from a man like you and others on here at MAP who seemingly aspire politicians to high moral/ethical positions. The fact that his and other politicians of his generations actions, bribes, kickbacks hurt La. political and business images have been used as smears isn't anything to be proud of. Being one of many crooked SOBs doesn't necessarily make Edwin Edwards a better person.

And yes, compared to Russell Long and Hale Boggs, his political career was mediocre. Sen. Russell Long and Boggs were forking instrumental in attracting Saints franchise to New Orleans, Long was one of the most well-respected, powerful senators for decades, Hale Boggs was one of the few Southern congressmen to vote and support the Civil and Voting Rights Acts and still be able to keep his congressional seat. He was the House Minority Whip in the mid-late 60's/early 1970's, and wanted to reopen the Warren Commission's findings into JFK's assassination, which he sharply disagreed with(WE All know how that ended up for him.) Edwards never came close to achieving the same heady levels of power as those two. "Kingfish" before his 1934 assassination was considered a serious Dem. challenger to unseat FDR as POTUS, if his bodyguards had perhaps done a better job of protecting him, he conceivably could've succeeded in doing that, regardless of what one thinks of "Kingfish's" actual socio-political, or economic policies and whether they would've been catastrophic for the country as a whole.

And in terms of him winning his fourth gubernatorial election, yeah, having a detested, completely bigoted candidate like David Duke was a huge primary factor in him presenting himself as the lesser of two evils, so don't try to overlook and dumb-down that fact. Lets not forget that Edwards was trailing in the polls several weeks before the actual election itself and the election itself went to a runoff, where Edwards thankfully won. And the La. Republican Party didnt even endorse or support Duke's gubanatorial election campaign, IIRC.

John Mckeithen might be one La. governor some might legimately argue accomplished more as governor,.either though he didnt serve four terms. He helped inspire the building of the Super dome after attending an Astros game in Houston in 1967, according to Dave Dixon in his autobiography, was actually vetted and the primary front-runner to be Hubert Humphrey's VP candidate until a politically-motivated, supposedly untrue story in Time that suggested Mckeithen was not doing an aggressive enough job combating Mafia influence in New Orleans or that he took payouts, or kickbacks to mob informants for information. Dixon believes Nixon's political PR team hatched this scheme along with Henry Luce, editor and chief executive of TIME magazine, and husband of Claire Life, a huge, big time GOP donor and conservative mover-and-shaker. Dixon believes Nixon set up this scheme to prevent Humphrey from nominating Mckeithen because he'd likely wins more Southern states for Democrats in 1968 as a moderate Southern VP candidate and Nixon was pushing his very successful "Southern Strategy", and Mckeithen was an possible, eventual barrier to that occuring and so Nixon needed a well-timed, plausible controversy popping up to dissuade Humphrey from going with a guy who's supposedly got major political baggage in exchange for Ed Maskie, his eventual VP candidate who along with Humphrey, lost to Nixon in 1968 POTUS elections.
Dixon went even further to state his belief that Mckeithen probably wouldve eventually run for President himself after HHH's health started declining by the mid-70's, and possibly could've won. Dixon stated that Mckeithen had very few political enemies, made very intelligent, informed decisions that tended to be very beneficial for La. and unlike Edwards, he wasnt this braggadious, endlessly celebrity-seeking controversy-prone figure EE became famous (or infamous for).

Edwin Edwards even said in a 1997 CNN interview that some of the allegations he was facing related to Eddie Debartolo's casino real estate payoff scheme was partly due, IMHO, to his perceived arrogance, flippant demeanor and mindset and how it fueled his political enemies' desires to bring his arse down because they'd long despised him for it.

Thanks for giving me a Louisiana history lesson full of things I already know, We disagree. Not surprised. Edwards was who he was and played the game it was being played when he got into politics. Period. Him finally being brought down and Dollar Bill Jefferson getting locked up are the two main things that have changed the way Louisiana politics are viewed. It is what it was. It still doesn't diminish who he was, what he did for the state and even really tarnish his legacy because he flaunted it openly the whole time.

Saying that Edwards was a good, yet extremely flawed, man doesn't make them any less of great people. Doesn't make Edwards a worthless Peice of work either. Just because he took kickbacks on anything he could doesn't mean that he didn't do a shirt load more than you're willing to give him credit for.

Biden was under Obama. Republicans spout and make huge scenes, but Obama did far more to close down the border than any other president. It wouldn’t surprise me if Biden is following in his footsteps

There is a scarcity of workers in America so immigration is needed. However, we do not want to import the 3rd world. We need talented immigrants. Moderate Democrats understand this.
