Today it begins, Kamala has reached the point that she's the Democratic Party nominee:

There's video from today. this link has video from her first public appearance since Biden endorsed her:

She spent yesterday on the telephone for most of the day. I read that yesterday that she called the party leaders in all 50 states. That would take me three days.

She's renamed her YouTube channel, that's the where to go for video: https://www.youtube.com/@kamalaharris

This is her video on her channel from two hours ago:

To play it, start it, and then move it up to 5:47. This was one of those live videos which don't start at zero.

I've named this thread General Election 2024 Harris vs Trump

Trump needs an introduction post as well, a MAGA suporter ought to write it: @Farb, @SaintForLife , @Others, calling for someone to please introduce your GOP candidate for this 2024 general election thread.

Vance suggests a new child tax credit of $5,000 per child.
Yet he couldn’t be bothered to show up when the child tax credit was up for renewal this week, and Rs blocked it in the Senate. If you think he would have voted for it, you’re a mark.

Vance rips Tim Walz on his "mind your own d*mn business" agenda
Vance supports the government monitoring women’s menstrual cycles. Vance really should mind his own damn business. He also supports preventing women from traveling out of state for health care. Walz is absolutely correct about Vance. He’s a creepy weirdo who wants to stick his nose where it doesn’t belong.

Vance calls Harris a “chameleon,” indicating she is a copycat and just becomes who other people want her to be.
This one is particularly rich coming from a man who has changed his name at least 3 times, and changes his positions as often as he changes his socks. Seriously, he either has a complete and total lack of self-awareness or he thinks you and all of MAGA are just too stupid to see this.

And “copycat”? OMG, 😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣

Vance does a very good job of articulating policies as well as pushing back on Harris talking points from the media.

"I enjoyed sitting down with 3 of the major networks today to answer the tough questions... Kamala Harris has done as many tough interviews as Tim Walz has battlefield deployments."

Vance revealed many of Trump's plans on policy during his interviews, something the Harris campaign has refused to do so far.

Here are the biggest moments from this morning:

1. Vance suggests a new child tax credit of $5,000 per child.

2. Vance says the U.S. should use its economic leverage against China to stop their manufacturing of fentanyl.

3. Vance rips Tim Walz on his "mind your own d*mn business" agenda.

4. Vance calls out Walz for stolen valor, and says he did it for political gain.

5. Vance rips Harris for refusing to sit down for a TV interview, indicating she is nervous about getting in front of the cameras.

6. Vance calls Harris a “chameleon,” indicating she is a copycat and just becomes who other people want her to be.

7. Vance sets the record straight on his comments regarding childless people.

The msm doesn’t ask Republicans tough questions.

It was designed with Senate Republicans who are largely establishment Republicans who want the border open for the cheap labor.

It wasn't a primarily Republican bill. Lol
Yeah, it was. And the Border Patrol that endorsed Trump for president supported the bill.

So, once again we see Republicans and you hate America. Why is that?

The msm doesn’t ask Republicans tough questions.
And he lied and weirded his way through these interviews. Managed to claim that he loved his wife more than Walz loves his. And said that Harris is “anti-child”. And maybe called her a “copycat”.

Total cringy weirdo.

This guy is out on social media every day talking to people who really don’t like Trump, but feel they “have” to vote for him because - fill in the blank.

He had this response on FB, but posted it on Twitter as well. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind any of us using it to try to break the spell for these people. The people who like Trump are probably too far gone, IMO.

Unfortunately the links don’t come through when you copy/paste, but I will put the tweet below.

Angie, Let's tackle Abortion first.

This breaks down when most abortions occur, less than 1% happen after 21 weeks.
guttmacher.org/fact-sheet/ind…

This explains the politicalization of Abortion. If you eliminate that 1% after 21 weeks, you will kill mothers and force the birth and suffering of fetuses with severe abnormalities.
parents.com/pregnancy/my-b…

It's also important to note that most Abortions are non-surgical and happen in the first trimester.

As for Billions going overseas - If you are talking about Ukraine, here's what you need to know:

1. The munitions we are sending to Ukraine have a shelf life. We are sending them our old munitions and using the money allocated for support for Ukraine to buy new weapons for our stockpiles.

That creates jobs and tax revenue for Americans. The old weapons weapons would have had to be replaced eventually, regardless.

2. It is cheaper to stop Vladimir Putin's aggression into Europe now, without having to send our forces there to fight. If we allow him to expand and grow, stopping him will be extremely expensive (in blood and treasure) and could lead to World War III.

3. If you are really concerned about spending, you need to look at total authorized spending, including tax cuts for the rich. Trump and Republicans passed a 2 trillion dollar tax cut for the rich and ultra rich that has since ballooned.

Look at the chart in the link below. You will see that Biden cut overall deficit spending in half compared to Trump.

crfb.org/papers/trump-a…

You are being lied to Angie. The good news is . . . The facts are available if you look for them.

If you have any other questions, I'm happy to answer them.”

i read an article (probably on here somewhere, i think it was Flynn) that explains it.
he doesn't think he's lying because he truly believes what he's saying.
which honestly should scare people..

It's because there is no such thing as Donald Trump anymore. His NPD is all that's left. It's nothing but a mental illness with eyes.

Kamala Harris returned home to the San FranciscoBay area for a Sunday fundraiser that drew top California Democrats and captured more than $12m for the conclusion of a swing state tour by the vice-president and her running mate, Tim Walz.

Former House speaker Nancy Pelosi and California governor Gavin Newsom attended the event in San Francisco at the Fairmont Hotel, where nearly 700 people had purchased tickets that cost at least $3,300 and as much as $500,000.

“This is a good day when we welcome Kamala Harris back home to California,” Pelosi said of the former US senator, attorney general and district attorney from the state.

“She makes us all so proud. She brings us so much joy. She gives us so much hope,” Pelosi said at the fundraiser. She went on to describe Harris as a person of “great strength” and someone who is “politically very astute”.

Harris and Walz, the Minnesota governor, have just finished a tour of multiple political swing states, packing rallies with thousands of people and building on the momentum that has propelled her since she took over at the top of the Democratic ticket…….

I love these quotes. You had Republican senators so proud that they got a "generational border bill" by leveraging Ukraine aide. Trump pissed it all away.

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA): “I would remind folks that during the Trump administration when we had the presidency, the House, and the Senate, we did absolutely nothing on the border. President trump is the one that had to really come up with the executive orders on the border. I think this is an exceptional opportunity to leverage what we have against the Democrats, to actually get some substantial changes on the border. So I think, again, we need to take a look at this very carefully. We stand the chance of or we stand the risk of losing the chance to actually get something done on the border now, because I don't see this opportunity coming up again, anytime soon.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC): “To those who think that if President Trump wins, which I hope he does, that we can get a better deal, you won’t. You’ve got to get sixty votes in the United States Senate. What Senator Lankford’s been able to achieve in asylum, in expedited removal, and other areas along the border, I think are meaningful reforms – but none of those reforms will work until you deal with parole. So to my Republican friends, to get this kind of border security without granting a pathway to citizenship is really unheard of. So if you think you’re going to get a better deal next time in ’25 if President Trump’s president, Democrats will be expecting a pathway to citizenship for that, in my view.

Sen. John Thune (R-SD): “There is absolutely no way that we would get the kind of border policy that’s being talked about right now with a Republican majority in the Senate… “This is a unique moment in time. It’s an opportunity to get some really conservative border [policies] that we haven’t been able to get for 40 years.”

Good, long and terrifying article

What Bill Maher called a ‘slow moving coup’
======================

There wasn’t anything particularly controversial about Georgia’s presidential primary in March this year. Donald Trump won the Republican contest – picking up a little more than 400,000 more votes than Nikki Haley, who had long dropped out of the race.

Nonetheless, two Republicans on the five-person Fulton county election board refused to certify the election.

Julie Adams and Michael Heekin didn’t point to specific irregularities. Instead, they said they needed more information from election administrators, like chain-of-custody documents for ballots. Adams and Heekin were outvoted.

But it didn’t end there. In May, Adams, who is a part of an election activist network founded by Cleta Mitchell, voted against certifying another Georgia primary election. Again, despite no irregularities, she said she needed more information.

With the backing of a group closely aligned with Donald Trump, Adams had also recently sued the Fulton county board, asking a judge to declare that she and other commissioners could choose not to certify the election.

It was an unusual request – verification of ballot totals happens in the extensive process that leads up to certification and state laws generally do not permit those responsible for certifying them the discretion to investigate.

In early August, the Republican-controlled state election board in Georgia adopted a new rule that essentially gave Adams what she wanted.

It requires local election board members to conduct an undefined “reasonable inquiry” into any discrepancies before they can certify the election. There are concerns that officials could use that discretion to hold up certification of the election.

The episode in Fulton county, and the new rule in Georgia, could be an alarming dress rehearsal for how Donald Trump and his allies will try to challenge the election results in November if he loses.

Trump has repeatedly refused to commit to accepting the election results, declining multiple times to do so during a 27 June debate. He has suggested that Christians would “never have to vote again” if he wins.

The anti-democratic sentiment has been echoed by other prominent conservatives, including Mike Howell, the director of the oversight project at the Heritage Foundation, who said earlier this year there was a “0% chance of a free and fair election”.

“I’m formally accusing the Biden administration of creating the conditions that most reasonable policymakers and officials cannot in good conscience certify an election,” he said at a Heritage Foundation event this summer.

The effort poses a challenge that again would test the strength of the US’s voting system and its democratic institutions. It could probably stretch from little-known county election officials to the Congress……..

There are two key differences.

First, Trump may be better prepared. Mitchell, a close Trump ally, has spent the last few years building up a network of activists focused on local boards of elections.

And the Republican National Committee’s election litigation team is now being led by Christina Bobb, an election denier who is now facing criminal charges for her efforts to overturn the 2020 race.

The RNC claims it is recruiting an army of 100,000 poll observers who could provide significant disruption during voting and counting.

“I think we saw efforts by Republicans in 2020 that were pretty ham-handed,” said Marc Elias, a top Democratic voting rights lawyer. “I worry that there will be both legal and extralegal efforts by Republicans to keep ballots from being counted.”

But more significantly, the idea that the 2020 election was stolen has moved from the fringes to being a pillar of the Republican party. A January poll from PRRI found that 66% of Republicans believe the 2020 election was stolen.

“The most important thing we have to do is protect the vote. You have to keep your eyes open because these people want to cheat and they do cheat, and, frankly, it’s the only thing they do well,” Trump said in a prerecorded video that played all four nights during the Republican national convention in July.

The belief in stolen elections, Elias said, was “no longer the provenance of crazy people like Rudy Giuliani, Jenna Ellis and Sidney Powell. This is no longer the province of people who thought that there were bamboo filaments in paper or mythical sea creatures involved in the election with Venezuelan dictators.

“It has become now the standard position of the Republican party.”……….

Just more anti-Americanism from the RWNJs.

And laying the groundwork of “they are cheaters who are definitely going to cheat so we need to cheat before they do”

I like how this quote from the article puts it:

“They’re hanging the hooks to later hang their hat on,” said Sean Morales-Doyle, the top voting rights expert at the Brennan Center.

The world is watching
=================

More than halfway through this year of momentous elections, liberal democratic parties have mostly managed to hold the line against the advance of the dark forces of nationalist populism in Europe.

Yet it is too early to declare victory for this firewall against the extreme right. The US presidential election could have destabilising knock-on effects in Europe and beyond if Donald Trump returns to the White House.

On the other hand, a victory for the vice-president, Kamala Harris, who has restored the Democrats’ hopes of retaining powerin just three weeks since President Biden pulled out of the race, could energise progressive forces around the world.

In Europe, the loose alliance of mainstream parties that has kept the forces of illiberalism, intolerance and bigotry out of power in Brussels, Paris, Berlin and Warsaw is fragile.

They have been aided by the congenital inability of hard-right parties, which won about 25% of the vote in EU-wide elections in June, to form a united frontin the European parliament.

Despite the attempt of Hungary’s prime minister, Viktor Orbán, to forge a single nationalist Internationale, there are now three rival Eurosceptic rightist groupingsinstead of the two in the previous legislature…….

Of all the events that could change the political dynamics in Europe, the US presidential election is by far the most potent. A comeback for a vengeful Trump would embolden and legitimise European nationalists and populists. Think of the smile on the face of the Reform leader, Nigel Farage, or the red-carpet welcome in Budapest for Orbán’s best buddy.

If Harris triumphs, leading an administration embodying diversity, feminism and a strong commitment to the rule of law, it could help strengthen the firewall across Europe.

However, barriers to keep the extreme right out of power will only work in the long run if the mainstream parties are able to address the issues with the cost of living, affordable housing and affordable energy that have driven so many voters into the arms of populists on both sides of the Atlantic……..

is he starting to lose his most loyal base?

Evangelical leaders are calling out the danger of endorsing political candidates from the pulpit as the nation witnesses a rise in pro-Trump "prophets," who claim God has anointed the former president as the chosen one.

Kimberly Reisman, executive director of World Methodist Evangelism, warned last week that doing so hurts Christians across the country. And Carl Nelson, president of Transform Minnesota, cautioned that many endorsements from church leaders fail to "hold that candidate accountable to the full spectrum of values we represent."

"God can use leaders from all parties, and to equate God's will with the will of any political party or person is exceedingly dangerous and a threat to the overall witness of Christians in the United States," Reisman said in a July 31 statement.

In recent years, a number of influential evangelical figures have come forward and spoken about receiving prophecies about former President Donald Trump as a secular messiah who will deliver conservative Christians from cultural exile. Many of them have gone viral, telling thousands and even millions of people that God will reinstate Trump in the White House, leaving their followers hanging on to promises of a second Trump term.

Matthew D. Taylor, a senior scholar at the Institute for Islamic, Christian and Jewish Studies, told Newsweek, that much of this began with Paula White-Cain, the prosperity gospel televangelist whom Trump chose to be his liaison with the evangelical community in 2015...............

..........Trump's campaign managers surely know that the more voters see Trump, the more they hate him. Trump's team didn't go after President Joe Biden on the age issue just because it was low-hanging fruit. It was also a way to distract from the fact that their own candidate, who was never that cogent to begin with, is rapidly decompensating from age and the stress of being convicted of 34 felonies. Now Biden's out, and the "Is the candidate too old?" spotlight is on Trump.

Republicans won't be following Democrats by changing their candidate, however. Unlike Biden, Trump is a narcissist who will never accept the truth about his decline. And unlike Democrats, Republicans are too afraid of their leader to tell him the truth. But it's also clear that the GOP wishes they could do a switcharoo. Right now, the Trump campaign is acting like their candidate is not the ranting orange degenerate at all, but his much younger — though still quite weird — running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio.

Vance has been tailing Harris across her swing state tour. On their own, his events have been failures, with crowds "generally in the dozens or low hundreds," Dana Milbank of the Washington Post reported. But, because reporters are already in town to cover the overflowing Harris rallies, Vance has been able to get press attention. So with Trump hiding out at Mar-a-Lago, Vance is the face representing the campaign.

Someone casually tuning in would possibly think that the Republicans, following the Democrats' lead, had dumped their elderly candidate for someone younger. On Sunday, for example, Vance appeared on three — ABC News’ “This Week,” CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” and CNN’s “State of the Union” — out of five major Sunday political news shows.

At first blush, this would seem like a poor idea. Vance lacks charisma, isn't half as clever as he thinks, and has spent so much time marinating in the world of extremely online fascism that he just seems weird. He's a bearded doppelganger for the equally charmless Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, who Republican voters couldn't reject fast enough during the presidential primary. Running a carbon copy of a guy who couldn't beat Trump in a primary seems, on paper, to be a uniquely stupid campaign strategy.

Under the circumstances, however, it makes sense. Vance is annoying, but he can speak in complete sentences, largely avoiding all talk of electrocution sharks and Hannibal Lecter.

There are fewer logistical issues in a Vance-centric campaign, as well. He's decades younger than Trump, and so has the energy to travel. Even if the rumors that he wears eyeliner are true, Vance cannot need the hours Trump must spend in hair and makeup just to be seen in public. No doubt the campaign wishes they had a substitute candidate who was less aggravating, but Vance surely looks better than their alternative: an ever-nuttier Donald Trump...........
