NEW YORK (AP) — President Joe Biden begins an intense period of private preparations Friday at Camp David for what may be the most consequential presidential debate in decades.

The 81-year-old Democrat’s team is aware that he cannot afford an underwhelming performance when he faces Republican rival Donald Trump for 90 minutes on live television Thursday night. Biden’s team is expecting aggressive attacks on his physical and mental strength, his record on the economy and immigration and even his family.

Trump, 78 and ever confident, will stay on the campaign trail before going to his Florida estate next week for two days of private meetings as part of an informal prep process.

The former president’s allies are pushing him to stay focused on his governing plans, but they’re expecting him to be tested by pointed questions about his unrelenting focus on election fraud, his role in the erosion of abortion rights and his unprecedented legal baggage.

Thursday’s debate on CNN will be full of firsts, with the potential to reshape the presidential race. Never before in the modern era have two presumptive nominees met on the debate stage so early in the general election season. Never before have two White House contenders faced off at such advanced ages, with widespread questions about their readiness.

And never before has a general election debate participant been saddled with a felony conviction. The debate-stage meeting comes just two weeks before Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on 34 felony counts in his New York hush money trial.

“You can argue this will be the most important debate, at least in my lifetime,” said Democratic strategist Jim Messina, 54, who managed former President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign.

    PRESSURE ON BIDEN

The ground rules for Thursday’s debate, the first of two scheduled meetings, are unusual.

The candidates agreed to meet at a CNN studio in Atlanta with no audience. Each candidate’s microphone will be muted, except when it’s his turn to speak. No props or prewritten notes will be allowed onstage. The candidates will be given only a pen, a pad of paper and a bottle of water.

There will be no opening statements. A coin flip determined that Biden would stand at the podium to the viewer’s right, while Trump would deliver the final closing statement.

The next debate won’t be until September. Any stumbles Thursday will be hard to erase or replace quickly.………..

Okay, I did see that. I just couldn't see the connection between Hurr's conclusion and SFL's comparison to being "mentally competent to stand trial" because... there isn't one.
Yeah, no kidding. Doesn’t prevent him from saying it though, over and over and over. So tedious.

See, I don’t think this is interesting, and I don’t think many other women do either. This is a high stakes gamble and not a game. If Trump wins, we lose the Supreme Court for decades. And women will bleed out quietly on bathroom floors. It’s terrifying to women, and my stomach is in knots over it.
Irreparable damage has already been done, and if the GOP wins the White House again, we'll likely have 5th circuit judges on the Court before long. And the people they're putting in are young enough to sit on the Court for decades. The fact that many people don't seem to recognize the ramifications is maddening to me.

Those are the rules of the convention, if I read the article correctly delegates are bound to vote for the winner of the primary on the first ballot. After that, if there’s no nominee they can vote their conscience.

But ignoring the rules would be a horrible message, not to mention opening up the DNC to lawsuits from disgruntled voters. Just stop with the crazy ideas here. This isn’t a game, or like the tweet I posted earlier - this isn’t Bewitched, where you can just substitute a different Darren.
They are just rules, not laws. It may look bad, but if Biden keeps tanking, it is the responsible thing to do. The lawsuits would go no where, because parties can nominate whoever they want. Besides the idea is that the town halls or mini primaries would give people a voice. I want the swing states to vote. I live in Alabama, so I don’t matter. Neither do any other people in deep red states. We could have a super primary of all the purple states and conduct the vote using ranked choice.

There's a certain "pro-Biden" vote that's already baked in. People like me, you, and a lot of people here, who would vote for Biden even if he had a stroke and entered a vegetative state. Who would crawl across broken glass on election day to vote for the vegetable. But we're not enough to win, certainly not in swing states.

There's also a certain "anti-Trump" vote that's already baked in. It includes us, but a substantial group that isn't us, yet could push the D ticket to victory. There are more anti-Trump people than pro-Trump people. They don't like Trump, but they're not like us. Instead of voting for Biden, they may vote third-party or not vote at all. And if we don't get them, we don't win.

I'll go all in on Biden if he wants to do it, but I expect him to go all in himself and do what it takes. But I'm not as pessimistic as some about a replacement strategy being a fantasy doomed to fail. Because I don't think this election is about getting people to fall in love with a Biden replacement. It's about giving the anti-Trump voters a reason to act on their anti-Trump feelings and actively vote for the D ticket. That's it. It's not really that high a bar.

I don't see how Biden can be the nominee with many in the media and also some in his party turning on him.

The only question is what kind of leverage they can they use to force him out.
Oooo, deer, you're being silly agan. Are you competing for me to get the silly award?

So, the extremely stupid Parkinson’s story has been put to bed. Evidently there is a policy against releasing the names of any specialists who come in to examine the President. The press corps today practically screamed at the Press Secretary because she adhered to the policy. It was an embarrassing display, the reporter was from CBS. Ed somebody.

So it turns out that this particular doctor is the neurologist who examined Biden at each of his annual physicals, which was disclosed but his name was not revealed. His report was disclosed on the annual exams each year, however. I imagine they sought his permission to publish his name and he agreed.

Moreover, he holds a monthly neurological clinic for WH military personnel who work at the WH. Which is why he is there about once a month.

All this because some right wing nut job started the rumor that Biden has Parkinson’s. This is so freaking stupid. WH reiterated that Biden wasn’t taking any drugs that are used to treat Parkinson’s, has no symptoms of Parkinson’s, and has not been diagnosed with Parkinson’s.

I made this statement in this very thread:

"Conservatives have been running a multi-year campaign to question Biden's senility, and age. Biden's debate performance was supposed to dispel these right wing talking points, and instead confirmed them. This has turned into a fever pitch call for Biden to be replaced."

I'll even add another nugget to this. Trump, and the boys started trying to prop up Biden's debate expectations. Does everyone remember them talking about how Biden was going to be "enhanced" for the debate? That was because the smearing campaign had worked so well they were worried that the bar for Biden was to low, and would be easily cleared.

I can know all those things, and still think Biden wet the bed during the debate. I have eyes. I saw his performance, and I see his poll numbers.
J-donk he's your last hope, he's worked hard for your goals. Don't scorn him now that he's old, listen to Bernie Sanders.

Bernie's saying the same thing I'm saying for crying out loud.

I agree Momala is probably the easiest, and safest choice forward. I personally don't see a lot of downside. I find it hard to believe there are any "Biden or Bust" people out there.

If I would wave a magic wand, I would pick Whitmer/Shapiro for the EC advantage. That's MI + PA. You only need WI to get to 270.

I imagine there are party insiders talking about that second option as well.
I like that kind sentiment toward Harris, I like her a lot, want her to be president.

The here and now is present. Do not change horses in the middle of the stream. Not unless a horse is dead, Biden is not dead. period.

He won the primary election, it's that simple. If they use leverage to force him out they will have me, and thousands of people like me climbing all over them.

They will not dare. I'm just telling you how it is. It's really quite simple, very straightforward. I view this as an attempted coup.

An attempted coup d'état within the Democratic party. Enjoy the grand drama of it while you can. These things happen. We'll get it all sorted out, don't you worry.

So a comedian is supposed to suage that you're trying to overturn the primary election results. It didn't work.

Here's Troll Bridge, a short story, a love letter written to Sir Terry Pratchett, the trolls creator after Pratchett's death. This is applicable to this situation. Listen to the dialog between Cohan the Barbarian and that nice troll.

Also listen to his horse, his horse talks, he even sing however badly, he does sing, he does write epic ballad songs.

Normally horses don't talk write songs or sing. That horse had been owned by a wizard before Cohan bought him. That explains that. So enjoy the show.

The real story happens during the credits, so don't turn it off too early, that's where the horse's famous ballad song is sung. That's where the pointy is.

NBC News has an expert on that 100% claims Biden has Parkinson's.

I don't care!!! I really don't care. All day and all night I don't care.

I don't care to eat green eggs and ham, says Sam I am.

    I am Sam. I don't care Donk, I don't care at all.

Biden will be the candidate, win or lose in 2024.
