NEW YORK (AP) — President Joe Biden begins an intense period of private preparations Friday at Camp David for what may be the most consequential presidential debate in decades.

The 81-year-old Democrat’s team is aware that he cannot afford an underwhelming performance when he faces Republican rival Donald Trump for 90 minutes on live television Thursday night. Biden’s team is expecting aggressive attacks on his physical and mental strength, his record on the economy and immigration and even his family.

Trump, 78 and ever confident, will stay on the campaign trail before going to his Florida estate next week for two days of private meetings as part of an informal prep process.

The former president’s allies are pushing him to stay focused on his governing plans, but they’re expecting him to be tested by pointed questions about his unrelenting focus on election fraud, his role in the erosion of abortion rights and his unprecedented legal baggage.

Thursday’s debate on CNN will be full of firsts, with the potential to reshape the presidential race. Never before in the modern era have two presumptive nominees met on the debate stage so early in the general election season. Never before have two White House contenders faced off at such advanced ages, with widespread questions about their readiness.

And never before has a general election debate participant been saddled with a felony conviction. The debate-stage meeting comes just two weeks before Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on 34 felony counts in his New York hush money trial.

“You can argue this will be the most important debate, at least in my lifetime,” said Democratic strategist Jim Messina, 54, who managed former President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign.

    PRESSURE ON BIDEN

The ground rules for Thursday’s debate, the first of two scheduled meetings, are unusual.

The candidates agreed to meet at a CNN studio in Atlanta with no audience. Each candidate’s microphone will be muted, except when it’s his turn to speak. No props or prewritten notes will be allowed onstage. The candidates will be given only a pen, a pad of paper and a bottle of water.

There will be no opening statements. A coin flip determined that Biden would stand at the podium to the viewer’s right, while Trump would deliver the final closing statement.

The next debate won’t be until September. Any stumbles Thursday will be hard to erase or replace quickly.………..

My advice to the media is to get your Trump critiques in while you still can without fear of government reprisal. You are, after all, "The Enemy of the People," so shutting you people down would clearly fall under "official acts."
We've been through a Trump presidency already so it's hard not to laugh at all the crazy things that the left claims will do if he's elected again.

Democratic U.S. Representative Adam Schiff told NBC News he felt Vice President Kamala Harris could win "overwhelmingly" if she ran against former President Donald Trump, but that President Joe Biden needed to make a decision about his own candidacy.

"I think she (Harris) very well could win overwhelmingly, but before we get into a decision about who else it should be, the president needs to make a decision about whether it's him," Schiff told NBC News on Sunday.

"Either he (Biden) has to win overwhelmingly, or he has to pass the torch to someone who can."

    Here is the full interview:

We've been through a Trump presidency already...
The only thing that stopped Trump the first time around is that he picked advisors that told him they wouldn't do the things he wanted them to do. That's why Trump is all in on Project 2025, because they are going to surround Trump with people who are loyal only to Trump and will do whatever he wants them to do.

That's the dangerous difference between Trump's first presidency and a second presidency by him. He will do all the destructive and crazy things he wants to do the second time around, because he will be surrounded by people that will do what he tells them to do and who will also let Trump do whatever he wants.

Not to mention Trump didn't have the benefit of the SCOTUS immunity decision the first time around.

Yes we have, and we remember how horrible it was. And we know how much worse a second one would be.

Also, Trump is the one saying what he will do in his second term, if elected. We're just making sure everybody knows about it. So if you have a beef with what the left is saying Trumpb will do, just tell Trump to stop saying what he wants to do.

"Either he (Biden) has to win overwhelmingly, or he has to pass the torch to someone who can." That's a really odd comment from Schiff. The only way for Biden to win overwhelmingly is if he stays in the race. No one can win an election if they aren't in it.

If he means "win overwhelmingly" in the polls, well there's nothing to indicate that Harris is "winning overwhelmingly" or can "win overwhelmingly" based on the polls.

The only real take away is that Schiff seems to be leaving it up to Biden and will support Biden if he stays in the race.

    They put it in writing.

He is constrained only by the strength of the system imo.. which is only maintained by widespread belief in the system itself. He's been through it now, knows the game, and now has many more friendlies in positions of power.

End of democracy and all? I don't say things like that but it would be naive imo to think that we wouldn't see Trump unleashed, whatever that means, in a second term. We most certainly will.

Women voters outnumber men voters and continue to outpace men in new voter registrations. Since 2017, women voter turn out has steadily increased and women have been voting more Democratic/Liberal than Republican/Conservative.

I think how the majority of women vote is going to determine the outcome of this election and right now it's looking like the majority of women might still plan on voting for Biden. I have faith in the majority of women voting against rolling back time to their past plight.
This post is why I'm concerned. You're basically disregarding the vote of black. Biden will maintain the same numbers that he had in 2020 of the black women vote. However, while Trump's numbers and reasons are totally exaggerated, Biden has lost the support of some black men. I know several who are either staying home or voting elsewhere, including Trump. In a race this close, it doesn't take much.

What would put us in the most danger is if Trump would have us enaged in a proxy war with a nuclear armed country just so we can steal another country's trillions in minerals.

Thank goodness Biden would never do that.

In all seriousness, I understand at this point in the election with Biden's condition and his bad polling the Democrats have to come up with crazy stories to motivate their voters and any undecided. But it's obvious to anyone besides Democrats exactly what they are doing.

People involved in Project 2025 include Ben Carson, Trump’s former housing secretary; Peter Navarro, White House trade adviser under Trump; and Russ Vought, director of the Office of Management and Budget under Trump. Earlier this year, Trump and the Republican National Committee named Vought as policy director for the RNC committee crafting the party platform ahead of its national convention this month in Milwaukee.

Trump’s former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows is a senior partner in one of the groups advising Project 2025, the Conservative Partnership Institute. And John McEntee, director of the White House Presidential Personnel

I was just speaking for myself and my view of it.

On Project 2025, I don't doubt that they will try to do some of if, but just because Trump supporters or former Trump officials participated in doesn't mean it's the official policy of the Trump campaign.

One of the guys who wrote it, is also writing your party platform. Nice try.

Reality check: A plethora of former Trump administration officials have worked on and endorsed Project 2025.
    • John McEntee, former director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office and one of Trump's most trusted aides, is a senior adviser for the project.
    • McEntee said in April that the Trump campaign and Project 2025 plan to "integrate a lot of our work" this summer, according to the liberal watchdog Media Matters.
Project 2025 is an effort to concentrate the president's control over the executive branch to override checks that otherwise could restrain his power.
    • A key tenet of the project is "Schedule F," an executive order that would allow the president to strip thousands of federal employees of employment protections, fire them and replace them with ideological loyalists.
    • Late in his previous administration, Trump signed an executive order creating a Schedule F job classification, which could apply to as many as 50,000 federal workers.
Since the order was signed in October 2020, the Trump administration didn't have time to fully implement it, and the Biden administration rescinded it before it could go into effect.
Trump has promised to reimplement Schedule F "on day one" of his administration.

It's not just a coincidence that Trump promises to do the same things Project 2025 does. It's not a coincidence that:
    • several top level people in Trump's campaign and previous administration are also top level people behind Project 2025
    • the person who was the lead writer of Project 2025 is also the lead writer of Trumps platform
    • Trump has been seen with the head of the Heritage Foundation several times
    • All 3 of Trump's appointments to the Supreme Court were all handpicked by the Heritage Foundation for Trump
