NEW YORK (AP) — President Joe Biden begins an intense period of private preparations Friday at Camp David for what may be the most consequential presidential debate in decades.

The 81-year-old Democrat’s team is aware that he cannot afford an underwhelming performance when he faces Republican rival Donald Trump for 90 minutes on live television Thursday night. Biden’s team is expecting aggressive attacks on his physical and mental strength, his record on the economy and immigration and even his family.

Trump, 78 and ever confident, will stay on the campaign trail before going to his Florida estate next week for two days of private meetings as part of an informal prep process.

The former president’s allies are pushing him to stay focused on his governing plans, but they’re expecting him to be tested by pointed questions about his unrelenting focus on election fraud, his role in the erosion of abortion rights and his unprecedented legal baggage.

Thursday’s debate on CNN will be full of firsts, with the potential to reshape the presidential race. Never before in the modern era have two presumptive nominees met on the debate stage so early in the general election season. Never before have two White House contenders faced off at such advanced ages, with widespread questions about their readiness.

And never before has a general election debate participant been saddled with a felony conviction. The debate-stage meeting comes just two weeks before Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on 34 felony counts in his New York hush money trial.

“You can argue this will be the most important debate, at least in my lifetime,” said Democratic strategist Jim Messina, 54, who managed former President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign.

    PRESSURE ON BIDEN

The ground rules for Thursday’s debate, the first of two scheduled meetings, are unusual.

The candidates agreed to meet at a CNN studio in Atlanta with no audience. Each candidate’s microphone will be muted, except when it’s his turn to speak. No props or prewritten notes will be allowed onstage. The candidates will be given only a pen, a pad of paper and a bottle of water.

There will be no opening statements. A coin flip determined that Biden would stand at the podium to the viewer’s right, while Trump would deliver the final closing statement.

The next debate won’t be until September. Any stumbles Thursday will be hard to erase or replace quickly.………..

In case anyone wondered what the orange goon thought after the debate (not that it matters, but it’s as you probably thought if interested):

I think Trump is uneasy with the idea of Harris running against him deep down.

I get the opposite impression and think you misunderstood what he was saying.

First off he clearly stated that he got Biden out of the race and seemed thrilled about it. If he was more afraid of Harris he wouldn't be thrilled about getting Biden out. That's not how Trump rolls. He's thrilled he thinks he got what he wanted which is Biden gone. Trump only wants what he thinks is best for him, so he thinks Biden being out is what's best for him.

Second, Trump does say regarding Harris, "I think she's going to be better," followed immediately by "she's so bad, she's so pathetic" and a few more insults I won't quote. I think he means Harris is going to be better for him, not that Harris will be better than Biden. Trump wouldn't want Biden out and Harris in if he was more worried about Harris than Biden. That's not how Trump thinks.

There is some serious overlap in the messaging of the people in the party who think Biden should step down, and the Republican campaign to highlight Joe's senility. I guess I'm smart enough to understand both of those exist, and one doesn't invalidate the other?

I frankly don't care who agrees or disagrees with me on any given topic.
    You and me both.

This is the first thing you've said in a week I can come to terms with, and agree with you about.

MAGA can say what they want. Donald Trump doesn't want to face anyone but Biden.
If that had any truth to it, Trump would not have triumphantly declared he knocked Biden out of the race and that Harris would be better, because she's effing pathetic in secretly recorded video.

Trump desperately wants Biden out. That's the one person he doesn't want to go against. I'm not saying that means only Biden can beat Trump, but the only person Trump and his camp are worried about is Biden, that's why they are desperately doing everything they can to get Democrats to pressure Biden out of the race. That's why in a very candid moment when he didn't know he was being recorded, he was already taking victory laps and happy about thinking Biden is definitely dropping out.

I don't know what you think of as a progressive, but the short list is of hopefuls:

    Harris
    Whitmer
    Newsom
    Shapiro
    Buttigieg

None of those are progressives. Some more uninformed people might think Newsom is because of California. He is a centrist in the same way as Pelosi. He comes from money, and is/was related to Pelosi via marriage.
I saw someone saying AOC, another saying Warren, another saying Raul Grijalva.

CNN and other large media corporations are hammering Biden because of his plans for corporate and wealthy tax rates. It really is that simple. I think Biden should have stepped down after 1 term, but he is the non Trump option at this point and it is probably too late logistically in the game to change directions.
That's exactly right. The moment he announced that, every major for profit news outlet except a very few immediately descended on him like sharks to chum.

I saw someone saying AOC, another saying Warren, another saying Raul Grijalva.

The only people in serious contention are the ones I mentioned.

I would be shocked honestly if it was anyone other then these four:

    Whitmer
    Newsom
    Shapiro
    Harris

America somehow has to choose between a senile old convicted felon, and a senile old man.
I fact checked your post for you.

Trump is actually suffering much worse from both diminished mental capacity and emotional capacity than Biden, Trump just has more physical energy and arrogance as he suffers it.

Some good candidates ran four years ago and the people rejected them. Biden wasn’t swimming in popularity then, either.

And a lot of other people are not mad at an incumbent president, who has managed some significant successes during very challenging times, running for reelection. Concerned from the debate but not mad. To be clear about that.
The post you quoted was 100% projection and revealing.

Covered but not covered the same way. The media wasn’t shouting in unison that Trump should withdraw when he was falling asleep in court, or talking about sharks and boat batteries and any of the other many idiotic tangents his minds wanders off to, or alleged to have sexually abused minors and his ongoing interactions with Epstein have now been supported with further evidence.
They didn't even question if Trump should step down or was fit for office after he was convicted on all 34 counts.

It's not that. The Biden campaign in 2020 ran on competence.
You had all the same complaints about Biden in 2020 as you do now. You even claimed he had dementia back in 2019.
No one walked away from that debate thinking Joe was competent.
You said very similar things about Biden before he won the primary and the 2020 election.

I really do think he is going to lose, and probably by at least a few points.
You thought the same thing back in 2020.

I'm really hoping your predictions about 2024 turn out as accurate as your predictions in 2020.

Did Biden even mention in the debate that his administration had staved off the recession predicted by almost everyone? I don't remember him saying that and I feel like that's about his strongest selling point on the economy.
It's unwise for an incumbent to start bragging about the economy until it's too close to the election for the economy to go south and bite you in the arse for bragging about. They'll start emphasizing the economy closer to the election if it's still looking good then. I also think that's when they'll go full bore on Project 2025, Roe being overturned and the evidence of Trump sexually abusing under age girls with Epstein.

What's horrible is I know you read this post when you decided to dig through every post on this topic. Why did you ignore this? This is obviously my honest opinion, and I'm talking about my own family members. I know you've read this post because you then tried to tell me this is why prejudiced against Biden. Not a good look, LA-LA.

I have a family member with dementia right now. Biden is so far from that. I do think he has a little bit of normal age related cognitive decline, but that's all.

If you want an example of what dealing with someone with dementia is like:

AFAIK this is a widely believed rumor, but it's close to my personal experience.

This was an anonymous report from the call with the governors, wasn’t it? Maybe it was said that way, maybe it wasn’t. I’m not getting all up in arms over something this small.
And I'd like to add, most Americans need more sleep. Over the last five years we've learned that proper sleep is a lot more important to our physical and emotional health than we ever knew. The rub dirt on it and walk it off mentality should be long gone by now.

You want Trump to win. That's how you hand Trump a win. I say that being a big supporter of AOC, but if you put her on the ticket as VP, especially with Harris, Trump wins.

I say this respectfully as I can. You need to go outside and touch grass.

I think that would be an untenable decision. Supposedly the argument is we’re going to lose too many undecideds because of age-related concerns with Biden. What do people think is going to happen if we replace him with a soon-to-be 83 year old democratic socialist? That’s just doubling down on the pressure points for critics.

If he ends up on the ticket, I’ll go ahead and start preparing for the worst.

Anybody seriously making a case for Sanders is just proving the point that there are people who just see an opportunity to oust Biden, and this isn’t about age-related concerns.
Some of the suggestions people are throwing out show me that a lot of people wanting Biden out are working off of impulse and not thinking things through.

I know if Steve ever starts showing me the gushing support and approval he's showing J-Donk, I'm having a "wait a minute, I must be completely wrong about this" rethinking about what I'm saying and doing. Just like I would if it were Trump.
Up until now I've gotten along with Steve fairly well. I think this is something which will in time will mostly blow over. We do still connect with music.

It's still months before election day. And for another thing, some of my computer keyboard keys have the markings worn completely off of them.

When I was typing "blow" up above I couldn't remember where the b key was. I had hell typing that. Steve will understand that because he teaches kids to play clarinets and saxophones, and those keys are hard to remember what they are for as well.

So it's nice to keep Steve around.

The v key used to say Steve has also lost its marking, I wanted to type a v and all I could find at that moment was a b.

About that music, Енджі Крейда has a new song out, Струна. Струна means, a string.

This stuff related with Steve has a lot to do with string.
