NEW YORK (AP) — President Joe Biden begins an intense period of private preparations Friday at Camp David for what may be the most consequential presidential debate in decades.

The 81-year-old Democrat’s team is aware that he cannot afford an underwhelming performance when he faces Republican rival Donald Trump for 90 minutes on live television Thursday night. Biden’s team is expecting aggressive attacks on his physical and mental strength, his record on the economy and immigration and even his family.

Trump, 78 and ever confident, will stay on the campaign trail before going to his Florida estate next week for two days of private meetings as part of an informal prep process.

The former president’s allies are pushing him to stay focused on his governing plans, but they’re expecting him to be tested by pointed questions about his unrelenting focus on election fraud, his role in the erosion of abortion rights and his unprecedented legal baggage.

Thursday’s debate on CNN will be full of firsts, with the potential to reshape the presidential race. Never before in the modern era have two presumptive nominees met on the debate stage so early in the general election season. Never before have two White House contenders faced off at such advanced ages, with widespread questions about their readiness.

And never before has a general election debate participant been saddled with a felony conviction. The debate-stage meeting comes just two weeks before Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on 34 felony counts in his New York hush money trial.

“You can argue this will be the most important debate, at least in my lifetime,” said Democratic strategist Jim Messina, 54, who managed former President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign.

PRESSURE ON BIDEN

The ground rules for Thursday’s debate, the first of two scheduled meetings, are unusual.

The candidates agreed to meet at a CNN studio in Atlanta with no audience. Each candidate’s microphone will be muted, except when it’s his turn to speak. No props or prewritten notes will be allowed onstage. The candidates will be given only a pen, a pad of paper and a bottle of water.

There will be no opening statements. A coin flip determined that Biden would stand at the podium to the viewer’s right, while Trump would deliver the final closing statement.

The next debate won’t be until September. Any stumbles Thursday will be hard to erase or replace quickly.………..

Biden is the man. His policies speak for themselves as Trump’s policies speak for him. I’ll assume we are making our premises based on adult, Informed, aware logical people, actual supporters of our constitution which are the majority. We don’t need a new Democratic nominee for President.
If my premise is wrong and across America we’re mostly dealing with STUPID then there’s a strong argument that we deserve the coming shirt show. 🔥🤔

I had kinda forgotten about the rampant rumors about Clinton’s health and full-on conspiracy theories. Pretty sure our resident theorist posted all of these, lol.

"He is not the candidate anymore. This is a legal issue now. You can no longer remove him in three swing states: Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. There's only one democratic congress. Michigan.

They have to vote to remove him. I don't believe the Republican party in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin will do that. And, if they do, it's then Kamala Harris. This is legal, so lawyers will have to look at this.

Now, there are some questions about whether the delegates can do something... The lifeblood of a campaign is money, and maybe the only way this gets solved is if the money starts drying up.

It's a legal issue now... but we're in f--- city."

The media reporters are making snide remarks about if Biden can stay awake, and Stelter made a truly despicable joke about Biden announcing aid for research on Parkinson’s. They never made any snide remarks when Trump fell asleep in court every damn day.

Clearly a joke. However, Trump for sure didn’t win. He’s basically incoherent and hasn’t made a single public appearance since the debate. Why are they hiding him? And why is the media covering up for Trump like they are? (This is a sarcastic attempt to get you to realize how stupid you sound with your crazy media conspiracy theories).

Not to mention this point, which does have merit. Biden will still need to show everyone that the debate was a one off, but showing polling after the media feeding frenzy that is still going on, is not terribly concerning.

MT15 - the debate was five days ago. He's had five days to do something. His house has a press room, and daily meeting with the press. At any point, he could have walked into that room, and taken questions.

The fact he hasn't says a lot.

Biden is down against Trump in the same states Democratic candidates are up. The money and focus should be on those candidates if Joe wants to stay in the race.

At least, he won't fully comprehend how much he tarnished his own legacy at the end.

I don't know if you've said which candidate(s) you'd like to see take his place. Apologies if you have and can point me in that direction.

Are you okay with Harris, because if he bows out, I don't see how it's not her given the circumstances?

I think any of them are better then Biden right now:

Harris, Newsom, Warnock, Whitmer, Shapiro, Beshear, even Buttigieg

The only one I have serious serous reservations about on that list is Buttigieg because of his lack of winning even a state race.

Democrats have an insanely deep bench. It's part of the reason why party insiders are so pissed. No one was begging Biden to run for a 2nd term.
