    =================

NEW YORK (AP) — President Joe Biden begins an intense period of private preparations Friday at Camp David for what may be the most consequential presidential debate in decades.

The 81-year-old Democrat’s team is aware that he cannot afford an underwhelming performance when he faces Republican rival Donald Trump for 90 minutes on live television Thursday night. Biden’s team is expecting aggressive attacks on his physical and mental strength, his record on the economy and immigration and even his family.

Trump, 78 and ever confident, will stay on the campaign trail before going to his Florida estate next week for two days of private meetings as part of an informal prep process.

The former president’s allies are pushing him to stay focused on his governing plans, but they’re expecting him to be tested by pointed questions about his unrelenting focus on election fraud, his role in the erosion of abortion rights and his unprecedented legal baggage.

Thursday’s debate on CNN will be full of firsts, with the potential to reshape the presidential race. Never before in the modern era have two presumptive nominees met on the debate stage so early in the general election season. Never before have two White House contenders faced off at such advanced ages, with widespread questions about their readiness.

And never before has a general election debate participant been saddled with a felony conviction. The debate-stage meeting comes just two weeks before Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on 34 felony counts in his New York hush money trial.

“You can argue this will be the most important debate, at least in my lifetime,” said Democratic strategist Jim Messina, 54, who managed former President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign.

    PRESSURE ON BIDEN

The ground rules for Thursday’s debate, the first of two scheduled meetings, are unusual.

The candidates agreed to meet at a CNN studio in Atlanta with no audience. Each candidate’s microphone will be muted, except when it’s his turn to speak. No props or prewritten notes will be allowed onstage. The candidates will be given only a pen, a pad of paper and a bottle of water.

There will be no opening statements. A coin flip determined that Biden would stand at the podium to the viewer’s right, while Trump would deliver the final closing statement.

The next debate won’t be until September. Any stumbles Thursday will be hard to erase or replace quickly.………..

That's not why I say he should go...

Biden being behind in the polls showing he can't win is one of the reasons you have been harping on. It's not the only one, but it's definitely been one of them. Early today you talked about the importance of having the candidate with the best chance of winning and Biden doesn't give the best chance of winning. You're all over the map with the things you have said and you have contradicted yourself and shifted your standards several times.

What point were you trying to make with that post?
You said it was obviously making the point that these were all white men, and I thought to myself, I’m guessing they have more in common than that low-hanging fruit, so I decided to think of things they had in common. What did I do wrong in your eyes? I know I must have…so just tell me, instead of beating around the bush.

The poll I posted is still an electoral loss, and it was 1 poll. Biden has been losing for months in the aggregate of polls. If I see an aggregate of polls showing him winning by at least 3 points, and winning at least 4 of the swing states, then I would be satisfied with him remaining, but I believe he won't finish another term well, and that is the other reason I wanted him out. However, my priority is winning to keep Trump out, so I'm less worried about the problem of how far he'll get in the next term.

You say all of that after just denying that you ever said you wanted Biden out because of polling.

You just said in your post above that how Biden's doing in the polls is what your most concerned about because you use that to determine if he's winning or losing and your "priority is winning," after just saying in your previous post that being behind in the polls is not why you say he should go. You've contradict yourself in back to back posts. You do it a lot and you shift your position a lot.

Someone commented on Twitter about the weirdness of Andrea Mitchell interviewing James Carville about Biden’s age. 🙂

You asked us to guess what they had in common. I'm asking you to tell me why it matters what those men have in common? Like I said, if only wealthy white non-elected men were calling for Biden to end his run, then it would have interesting meaning. If it were true, then one could surmise some motivations that don't match the electorate, but that's not the case. You said I misinterpreted everything you said, so that's why I'm asking what message were you trying to send with your post?

No at all, it's that list of them who have called for Biden to step down that's not demographically representative.

The other list of them, the ones who do support Biden looks fine insofar as it being demographically balanced:

    Backed Biden (35)

Rep. Jerry Nadler* (New York) — July 9
Rep. Jasmine Crockett (Texas) — July 9
Rep. Joyce Beatty (Ohio) — July 9

Rep. Maxine Waters (California) — July 9
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand* (New York) — July 9
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez* (New York) — July 8

Rep. Haley Stevens (Michigan) — July 2
Sen. Raphael Warnock (Georgia) — June 30

    Hero's!

You think that’s demographically balanced given the demographics of Congress?

    You’re smarter than that.

You asked us to guess what they had in common.
No I didn’t. I didn’t make that post. I just responded to your assertion that you thought it was obvious that the only thing they had in common was being white and male.

My bad. Sorry about that. I didn't go back to check who posted that. I just saw it was SamAndreas, so I should ask him what message he was trying to send.

    Worth one's time:

At around the 3:15 mark the reporter gets caught in a stammering loop for a couple of seconds. I laughed my arse off about that. The guy reporting Biden getting tongued shows Biden's unfit, did the very same thing he says makes Biden unfit.

It's a subset of Congress, I said was "demographically balanced."

I didn't say anything about the demographics of Congress overall. Overall there are too many WASPs, although not as overloaded with WASPs as that short list of who want to dump on Biden.
