    =================

NEW YORK (AP) — President Joe Biden begins an intense period of private preparations Friday at Camp David for what may be the most consequential presidential debate in decades.

The 81-year-old Democrat’s team is aware that he cannot afford an underwhelming performance when he faces Republican rival Donald Trump for 90 minutes on live television Thursday night. Biden’s team is expecting aggressive attacks on his physical and mental strength, his record on the economy and immigration and even his family.

Trump, 78 and ever confident, will stay on the campaign trail before going to his Florida estate next week for two days of private meetings as part of an informal prep process.

The former president’s allies are pushing him to stay focused on his governing plans, but they’re expecting him to be tested by pointed questions about his unrelenting focus on election fraud, his role in the erosion of abortion rights and his unprecedented legal baggage.

Thursday’s debate on CNN will be full of firsts, with the potential to reshape the presidential race. Never before in the modern era have two presumptive nominees met on the debate stage so early in the general election season. Never before have two White House contenders faced off at such advanced ages, with widespread questions about their readiness.

And never before has a general election debate participant been saddled with a felony conviction. The debate-stage meeting comes just two weeks before Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on 34 felony counts in his New York hush money trial.

“You can argue this will be the most important debate, at least in my lifetime,” said Democratic strategist Jim Messina, 54, who managed former President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign.

    PRESSURE ON BIDEN

The ground rules for Thursday’s debate, the first of two scheduled meetings, are unusual.

The candidates agreed to meet at a CNN studio in Atlanta with no audience. Each candidate’s microphone will be muted, except when it’s his turn to speak. No props or prewritten notes will be allowed onstage. The candidates will be given only a pen, a pad of paper and a bottle of water.

There will be no opening statements. A coin flip determined that Biden would stand at the podium to the viewer’s right, while Trump would deliver the final closing statement.

The next debate won’t be until September. Any stumbles Thursday will be hard to erase or replace quickly.………..

This part I don’t see happening, tbh. I think Trump’s “lead” in the polls is smoke and mirrors. I don’t think he has broadened his appeal at all, his attempts to garner black and Latino votes seem clownish, and I think he will not be able to back away from abortion or his fascistic Project 2025. He talks like a maniac, nobody but the 20-30% of the cult are voting for him, IMO. (Of course I can’t be sure).

The economy is going well, we avoided a recession, jobs are fantastic, the stock market is good, prices are retreating, border crossings are way down and manufacturing jobs are coming back. Biden has quietly done some really good things for the middle/poorer classes - drug prices for seniors, airlines have to refund now, expanded Affordable Care Act, etc.
And why is there hardly any talk about all of that?

And who desperately doesn't want anyone talking about that?

And who's helping them get what they desperately want?

You can take some assurance from the fact that even CNN is starting to bang the drum on Trump's Project 2020 and Trump's cognitive decline that's obvious every time he opens his mouth for 30 seconds or more. Remember, CNN is chasing ratings and they are now starting to run hard hitting, negative stories about Trump. Nielsen polling is more accurate and reliable than political polling, especially over the last two years.

Trump is Tyson biting a chunk out of the ear of the American public right now. Just like for Tyson, it won't help Trump win.

Pelosi is clearly saying "It's time to give it up Joe." without actually saying it publicly.
You're not hearing or seeing clearly if you think Pelosi is saying that.

You're hearing and seeing want you want to hear.

You do the same thing to a lot of posters who disagree with you. You see and hear them saying things they are not saying.

You're what those in screenwriting call an unreliable narrator. That's not to say you're lying, just that your perspective can't be trusted to be accurate.

The entire progressive block was advised by someone to stay out of this.
That's certainly the conclusion you have jumped to.

In reality, most of the "progressive block" in Congress have individually come out and said we need to get behind Biden and focus on policy. That's hardly staying out of it.

I don't disagree, but a big problem is that most Americans think the economy is terrible:
A lot of people will change their minds on that if the recent drop in inflation holds or drops even more. It also will help a lot if the Fed lowers the rate in Sept, like people think they will and that would be perfect timing.

Prices going down is great for people, but with the amount of credit card debt people are in, a drop in the interest rate will save most Americans a meaningful amount of money on interest payments.

Things can always change, but right now the economic outlook for October is looking good for Biden. October is the most important month in the election cycle.

Biden uses the word "anyway" or "anyways" constantly!
Public Speaking 101 - Crutch sounds and words, everyone has them. Takes a lot of training and regular practice to eliminate them. It's even harder for someone with a stutter.

    Um..like...uh..you know..um..well...okay...so...like...um...you've never...like...um...heard...you know...well...use..um..like...crutch sounds...and...like...words...when...you know...they're...speaking...um...you know...like...anyway...like..um...in public?

Biden has never been know as a great public speaker, his stutter has a lot to do with that. Obama is known as a great public speaker and he pauses and use crutch sounds and words like...um...the thing is...you see...um...like a mofo.

Clinton and Obama were top notch.
    Uhm...well............................the thing is...........................you know.......................................like Obama......................................did a lot of...........................................pausing...................................as he thought about...you know...............................................................the thing.......................................................that he...um...the things...............he wanted................................to say.

And you just said that Obama was a top notch speaker, don't you know.

I was big picturing it, I'm still absolutely voting for Biden if he is the nominee.

I think he's damaged but it's not outright impossible that he could still win. But I do not like the odds and based upon the current situation and atmosphere, I think we're pretty much in hail mary territory.
This is intended as an affirmation not a criticism. If you're voting for Biden, then there was no irreparable or irreconcilable damage done for you. I think that the majority of voters are a lot more like you and in the same place you are, than you are concerned they aren't. We won't know one way or another until after election, so I understand your concerns and I have some of my own too.

Some, such as @bdb13 are being reasonable and realistic.

I'm glad to know you agree that he's being both reasonable and realistic when he says this:
I'm still absolutely voting for Biden if he is the nominee.

So tell me, Steve, why are you going to be unreasonable and unrealistic by voting for Trump?

You missed the part that talked about the delegates being loyal to Biden. That's why he can negotiate his exit.

This is not even up for debate. It's why people say Biden can gets decide if there is an open primary or if Harris takes over. It's his decision because of that fact.

I won't argue you with you and LA-LA on this. You are wrong if you don't agree.
I said he can ask them to support Harris, they're loyal, they probably would go with it.

But that's not negotiating from a position of power.

Nicolle Wallace described this as a political dam about to break.

These are some quotes from that article with my emphasis on what stands out to me:

Four Democratic sources with knowledge tell CBS News that they expect dozens of Democratic lawmakers over the next 48 hours to issue statements calling for President Biden to step out of the race.

The planning is coordinated, and some of the statements are pre-written, according to two sources. And it's not clear that anything Mr. Biden said in his high-stakes press conference Thursday night could redirect the expected course of events.

House Democratic leadership has indicated to members that they should speak their minds, multiple sources told CBS News. One of those well-placed sources predicted that the next three to four days will be "brutal," and that it may become untenable by sometime next week for the president to continue in the race.

Two of the sources predicted that, should Mr. Biden step aside, Vice President Kamala Harris would ultimately move to the top of the ticket and pick up the $240 million war chest. ... However, the Democratic Party would then also need to shore up more support among men, and it's an open question as to which male running mate would join her on that ticket to challenge former President Donald Trump.

Biden only goes out if he chooses to go out, so the goal is to bully, harass and shame him into dropping out.

I want to say that's bold assumption, but that would be rude so I won't.
I get your drift, so you don't need to go there.

The assumption I made is that the mind is in the here and now, didn't worry about the future. So it wasn't bold.

I asked before and got no answer :)

Given the fact that the republicans have stoked most election official post around the country
Given the fact that the republicans have filled a lot of judiciary positions around the country
Given the fact that the republicans owns the supreme court.
Given the fact that there were no serious contender
How many democratic candidates can even RUN in every single state?

If Biden gets out - how is it possible to even ensure that a candidate can actually BE on the ballot.? I really think that this is the actual "Plan" to get Trump back to the WH.

Yeah, A billionaire, media clogoamants, and congress critters are undermining my and your franchise to vote. I'm miffed about it.

Notice I didn't mention the fellows here who are also trying to undermine my franchise. I'm not miffed about them. I've been very successfully keeping them busy here, so they're not out there on the streets talking to undecided voters, souring them for the general election.

I couldn't do much to help, but I was happy to pitch in and do that for Biden.

You've been helping too. Helping a lot.

We have the Elias Law Firm aligned with us. The are formattable, they have a track record of having almost all wins spanning lots of cases in all of the states. My thought is that will not be a problem. But there will be something.
