NEW YORK (AP) — President Joe Biden begins an intense period of private preparations Friday at Camp David for what may be the most consequential presidential debate in decades.

The 81-year-old Democrat’s team is aware that he cannot afford an underwhelming performance when he faces Republican rival Donald Trump for 90 minutes on live television Thursday night. Biden’s team is expecting aggressive attacks on his physical and mental strength, his record on the economy and immigration and even his family.

Trump, 78 and ever confident, will stay on the campaign trail before going to his Florida estate next week for two days of private meetings as part of an informal prep process.

The former president’s allies are pushing him to stay focused on his governing plans, but they’re expecting him to be tested by pointed questions about his unrelenting focus on election fraud, his role in the erosion of abortion rights and his unprecedented legal baggage.

Thursday’s debate on CNN will be full of firsts, with the potential to reshape the presidential race. Never before in the modern era have two presumptive nominees met on the debate stage so early in the general election season. Never before have two White House contenders faced off at such advanced ages, with widespread questions about their readiness.

And never before has a general election debate participant been saddled with a felony conviction. The debate-stage meeting comes just two weeks before Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on 34 felony counts in his New York hush money trial.

“You can argue this will be the most important debate, at least in my lifetime,” said Democratic strategist Jim Messina, 54, who managed former President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign.

    PRESSURE ON BIDEN

The ground rules for Thursday’s debate, the first of two scheduled meetings, are unusual.

The candidates agreed to meet at a CNN studio in Atlanta with no audience. Each candidate’s microphone will be muted, except when it’s his turn to speak. No props or prewritten notes will be allowed onstage. The candidates will be given only a pen, a pad of paper and a bottle of water.

There will be no opening statements. A coin flip determined that Biden would stand at the podium to the viewer’s right, while Trump would deliver the final closing statement.

The next debate won’t be until September. Any stumbles Thursday will be hard to erase or replace quickly.………..

Biden's done pretty well thus far I would say.
I just got home and turned it on. Looks much better than at the debate, has some color in his face.

The only way to counter the current narrative is to keep him out, front and center, between now and November, and show that he’s up to the demands of the job.

I feel he is working hard....straining with extreme focus to speak with any kind of normal rhythm. It is not the way Obama talked.....or Carter talked....or Bill Clinton talked.
Just because Biden is doing better than the debate doesn't reassure me.
Compare him to Obama, Clinton, Carter...to any former president. We didn't watch them with this "edge of the seat inner tension". Biden speaking style makes me feel so uncomfortable....because HE IS so uncomfortable.
He made reference to his choice of Vice President. He chose Vice President Trump.
I am not reassured at all.

The debate may very well have been a fatal blow but he's definitely doing significantly better here, warts and all.

    One more observation.
Biden uses the word "anyway" or "anyways" constantly!
He gets going on a train of thought but loses track of the end destination.
He sometimes can't finish his sentence or if he does, he can't add a second sentence to finalize his point....so he says: "Anyways"....then he looks down and he gives up finishing the point of whatever he attempted to say.

Still, if he could have basically performed something similar to this at the debate.. there'd have been no firestorm. They were counting on this Joe Biden showing up that night and he didn't and it screwed things up.

That's fair. That night the bar was set low and he even fell short of the low bar.
Tonight he raised himself up to meet the low bar. So what.
    Yet....compare him to Obama.
    THAT should be the standard.
He really wasn't up to the standard of how every other president in my lifetime presented themselves at a Press Conference.
Your low standard of expectation (comparing him tonight vs the debate )is not where I think we should focus.
Another example, Biden said he was following the advice of "my commander in chief".
Uh.....unfortunately, Biden is the Commander in Chief.
    That's why I am "B O R N "
    Biden Oughta Retire Now

    He's not a convicted criminal.

Yeah, and it didn't matter one iota, anyone who heard it was able to know what he meant.

Its not at all unusual for a mistpeak once in an hour of continuous talking.

Other than that one flaw his performance was top notch.
Clinton and Obama were top notch.
Biden isn't anywhere near those men. Not...even...close.

    Yup.
    America is totally screwed.
Kinda like: Do you want to die by the electric chair or by lethal injection?
Our two choices are both horrible.
You know Steve in America people used to respect and honor their elders.

The bible says one must honor elders as well.

So what are you going to tell God when you get there?
