A lot of what you guys are saying makes sense. I think it is inevitable Russia will get Ukraine.
I was in Ukraine in 1990 and it is a beautiful place and the people were amazing and also not very fond of the soviets.

I just don't buy into a 'sacred duty' when the other countries in NATO don't feel the same sacred duty as evidence in their defense spending.

What will also be sketchy is when China moves on Taiwan

    Do i really have to?

When did we start teaching our children that doing the right thing requires something to be in it for us?
When did defending Ukraine become the 'right thing' and why? Everyone just says we should but why? Those kids are the ones that will be dying there not you or me.
Was Vietnam the 'right thing' as well?

    No

Iraq and Afghanistan weren't the right thing either.

I haven't argued that going into Ukraine is the right thing to do, but asking the question "what's in it for us", isn't the right attitude.

It is a disgusting immoral attitude.

I'm not delving into all this shirt.. it's too much LOL. But a couple thoughts anyways.

Certainly don't send US troops into Ukraine to get involved in this, but I'm not sure that anyone of consequence is really proposing that(?) as an option. I hope not.

Longterm.. I'm sure there would be/will be major geopolitical ramifications if/when Russia continues beyond Ukraine in retaking territory lost to them post USSR.

fork if I know how we're supposed to deal with it though.

The truth is that Obama should have done more to prevent him from taking Crimea.

Trump should have punished him for taking Crimea.

W should have punished him for invading Georgia.

Clinton should have done a better Job of integrating Russia with the west before Putin took over.

I will strongly disagree. If we want to sell them stuff, sign me up. If you are asking our sons and daughters to die for another country, I think the 'what is in it for us' is the only question we, as citizens, need to be asking.

I still don't get how we can have all these wars that accomplish nothing besides financial booms for the defense industry and yet your opinion is that we should not ask questions but trust our leaders. But then again, the kids that could potentially be dying are not really our kids but the state's anyway, or so I have been told.

Farb, I just posted this in another thread, it’s a good explainer about why we should help Ukraine. BTW, nobody is proposing we send troops there. They don’t belong to NATO, so it will be arms sales and sanctions against Russia if they do invade.

Sanctions would be a lot more bigly if Europe wasn't reliant on Russia for gas. That is kind of my point. They want us to care and to help if and when Russia gets aggressive but they also sign up for Russian gas, I don't see Germany being a big help if WW3 erupts since they won't be able to turn on lights?

I am all for arms sales and sanctions but that kind of stupidness makes me question NATO as an organization and the leaders of the EU.

We shouldn’t send people to die for money. They aren’t mercenaries.

Stopping a free country from being invaded is fighting to defend freedom. It doesn’t have to be our freedom.

We shouldn’t go to war to “liberate” people and install freedom like they tried to claim in Iraq.

We should go to war if it could prevent people from needing to be liberated in the first place.

Biden is working out deals with other countries to provide Germany with the needed gas if they have to sanction Russia. I suppose we will see if they can work it out.

Did you read the reasons that the US needs to help Ukraine from the Twitter thread that I posted? I wasn’t aware of some of those situations, it was helpful to see it spelled out.

I did not get the chance but I will.

Just curious, do you feel the same as Taiwan when China 'unifies' with them?

Are you suggesting that Russia's claim to Ukraine is equal to China's claim to Taiwan?

Taiwan is part of China IMO. That doesn't mean that I would be ok with China invading and killing people in the streets.

Can you explain how if China and Taiwan are the same, why is not Ukraine considered to be part of Russia?

Well, that's been the attitude since the pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock. That's very much why the U.S. has gotten into every conflict (hot, cold, or otherwise) the U.S. has gotten into; that is why the U.S. supports some countries and not others...

    And it's not just a U.S. thing... it's a human thing.
