I'm the treasurer of a union that negotiates on behalf of employees at 13 different companies.

I can negotiate whatever and come to a tentative agreement. That doesn't mean anything unless the members approve. They show their approval by voting. We have to, slowly, explain that to each company representative after every meeting because after every rejected contract proposal they sob about how they thought that we had a deal. Then we explain it again and if a proposal gets rejected again they, once again, cry about how they're wasting their time if we don't just agree to whatever they want.

I saw one article talking about how the union had negotiated and that should be the end of it. Obviously, somebody who was never in a union.

So, what I have seen. The employees are to be on call 24/7 365 days per year. They will be allowed 1 paid, and 3 unpaid days off per year that are to be scheduled 30 days in advance. If the company says no, the employee either doesn't get days off, or they call off. Every time that they call off they lose a vacation day and accrue a point toward discipline.

I hope that they quit in droves. I'm sure that their maintenance people will. Journeyman mechanics/electricians are incredibly difficult to hire. They won't have problems finding jobs. A lot will stay depending on seniority and how close they are to retirement.
I am one of the Journeyman mechanics/electricians, types with welding and pipe fitting added in. What you are describing is what there is whether they work for a railroad or any other of the mechanical contracting trades.

If you work in a critical infrastructure field you will be on call 24/7/365 for as long as you work there. It's a fact of life. You will not be allowed to strike. And as such a worker it was very apparent to me that it was reasonable.

My job was to stamp in through puddles of still standing water while the firemen were coiling their hoses, and take charge of that situation. My task was to get those wheels if critical industry rolling again. Home folk people everywhere were depending on me.

For years people would call me MacGyver. They called me that because I could fix anything with whatever tools and materials I could find laying around me at the time.

Damned straight I worked 24/7/365 anytime I had to. I didn't get to decide when I had to do that. disasters decided that for me.

It was who I was. It's who most of those railroad workers are too. 24/7/365 they do it because they are outstanding people.

I know damned well that this agreement will satisfy most of my union brothers working in that rail sector of critical infrastructure. They will do it whether or not you are completely satisfied for them. They will decide if for themselves.

I know that because I've been satisfied by something quite similar all through my life. Not everything of what I wanted at any time, but always just good enough. Being union was important to me, but being who I was more important.

Joe Biden is not, and never will be, a clown. I'm proud of him. He's going to sign that bill because he, just as I always did I, he has to tend to critical infrastructure first.

The, not a "clown." deals with reality as it is and makes me proud that I voted for him in the primary and again in the general election.

I believe the sick time issue will be taken up again. If these employees are being paid as well as I read, I highly doubt they resign, but if they do then that is their right. Especially since they are getting a raise in the 24% range, IIRC.

Sick time needs to be addressed, but they’re being paid so well because we do depend on them for critical supplies. Biden didn’t want to go this route, he worked very hard to avoid it. But he has no choice. Blame the vast majority of Rs who voted against the sick time, blame the Rs who filibustered the sick time bill so that a simple majority wasn’t enough to pass it, so that even though it passed it wasn’t enough to beat the filibuster.

Blaming Biden would be very far down my list of who is at fault for this, though.

I'm not very well versed on all the details of this bill or the negotiations. To me, being an engineer who gets a week of paid sick leave and 3 weeks of paid vacation a year, the one paid day off a year that has to be scheduled 30 days in advanced seems extremely paultry and pathetic.

But this seems like one of those real politic situations where political ideology smacks right into the wall of governing reality. For all the reason mentioned previously, Biden, as president, couldn't allow this strike to take place. It would have crippled the country. Biden's first responsibility as president is to the country. The companies undoubtedly used that to their advantage.

Still, I understand why @Eeyore and other union reps are incensed. It basically kneecaps unions at the very moment they where finally resurgent after a long decades of decline. And at the hands of a Democrat president, no less. But as @MT15 pointed out, if there were more Democrats in congress, they would have gotten better sick leave.

What a relief to at least get one detainee home.

Of course Rs are distorting the facts here:

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — An energy department official is accused of stealing luggage from Harry Reid International Airport, the 8 News Now Investigators learned Thursday.

A felony warrant was issued for Sam Brinton, a deputy assistant secretary, sources said. The charge is for grand larceny with a value between $1,200 and $5,000, records showed.

Brinton is a deputy assistant secretary of the office of spent fuel and waste disposition, according to the Office of Nuclear Energy’s website.

Brinton faces charges for a similar incident at the Minneapolis airport. He was on leave after charges were filed in connection with that incident, an energy department spokesman said in November.

Why did you feel the need to point out his race and call him a “diversity hire”? I mean, we all know why someone would do that. My question is, can you see it in the mirror?

We all know why. It's not even worth posing the question. Just ignore and let him flail in the wind of insignificance.

But you couldn't do it, you had to say something! LOL

Is he not? Is Diversity not a big thing for his administration?

dont play dumb. You know what you said and why you said it.

Do you think his race has a bearing on his crime? Do you think he couldn’t possibly have been hired due to his own qualifications? Evidently you do think that, or you wouldn’t have worded your comment the way you did. As you worded it, it’s a racist comment. So you own it at least. No more pretending.

Everyone's favorite diversity hire, non-binary, spank kink specialist and dog fetish luggage thief is at least kind of funny. I tip my hat for the humor during a trying personal time as Joe finally fired him after his 2nd theft of a woman's luggage.

They should have worked for the last guy while taking money from Saudi Arabia and patents from China. Then they would have been made a special advisor.

I don't think Mr. Brinton would have fair very well in the middle east.
