Didn't really see a place for this so I thought I would start a thread about all things LGBTQ since this is a pretty hot topic in our culture right now

• The Supreme Court on Thursday delivered a unanimous defeat to LGBT couples in a high-profile case over whether Philadelphia could refuse to contract with a Roman Catholic adoption agency that says its religious beliefs prevent it from working with same-sex foster parents.
• Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in an opinion for a majority of the court that Philadelphia violated the First Amendment by refusing to contract with Catholic Social Services once it learned that the organization would not certify same-sex couples for adoption.

I will admit, I was hopeful for this decision by the SCOTUS but I was surprised by the unanimous decision.

While I don't think there is anything wrong, per se, with same sex couples adopting and raising children (I actually think it is a good thing as it not an abortion) but I also did not want to see the state force a religious institution to bend to a societal norm.

Where one lives doesn't factor. Taking your junk out in public or where it can be seen by the public is still generally illegal.

The bathroom transgender issue should be a non-issue on both the right and the left.

Why were the transgender making noise about bathrooms when they had used them forever with no issues?

Where else are they going to eat to wedding cakes made by Christian bakers?

Yes, my daughter is biologically female and identifies as a girl. How she identifies is germane to the discussion we’re having on gender identification.

We are going to just disagree here. But I’m curious.

1. At what age is it acceptable for a child to identify different than their biological make up.

2. Would someone who thinks of themselves as opposite of their biological make up be considered to have a mental disorder?

Yes, my daughter is biologically female and identifies as a girl. How she identifies is germane to the discussion we’re having on gender identification.

That is just over the top PC talk Brandon. Some people on the left elevate the PC stuff to religion and force themselves to speak the prescribed gospel at all times.

I have five kids and I changed their diapers when they were babies. I know which ones are the girls and who is the boy. I would not go around saying I have a daughter because she identifies as a girl. That is just over the top PC speech.

If one of my daughters had gender dysphoria I would show compassion and accept her. However, in my mind I would always know she is a girl that wants to act like a boy. I would not call her my son.

Gender dysphoria is not normal. However, people with gender dysphoria should be treated with ultimate respect since they hurt no one. The suicide attempt is very high and as a society we should provide adequate health care.

The DSM-5 defines gender dysphoria in children as a marked incongruence between one’s experienced/expressed gender and assigned gender, lasting at least 6 months, as manifested by at least six of the following (one of which must be the first criterion):

• A strong desire to be of the other gender or an insistence that one is the other gender (or some alternative gender different from one’s assigned gender)
• In boys (assigned gender), a strong preference for cross-dressing or simulating female attire; or in girls (assigned gender), a strong preference for wearing only typical masculine clothing and a strong resistance to the wearing of typical feminine clothing
• A strong preference for cross-gender roles in make-believe play or fantasy play
• A strong preference for the toys, games or activities stereotypically used or engaged in by the other gender
• A strong preference for playmates of the other gender
• In boys (assigned gender), a strong rejection of typically masculine toys, games, and activities and a strong avoidance of rough-and-tumble play; or in girls (assigned gender), a strong rejection of typically feminine toys, games, and activities
• A strong dislike of one’s sexual anatomy
• A strong desire for the physical sex characteristics that match one’s experienced gender

As with the diagnostic criteria for adolescents and adults, the condition must also be associated with clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

Gender dysphoria is classified in the DSM-V as a mental disorder, but only in the sense that someone wants to be the opposite gender from their biological sex and experiences significant social and emotional stress because of it. If they take steps to rectify the dysphoria (by transitioning to the desired gender in various fashion), then they would not be classified as having a mental disorder, assuming they were no longer experiencing "clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning."
