I couldn’t find a thread just about this case, and thought we should have one since it’s Trump’s first criminal trial. He has to attend every day, as I understand it. Here is a quick reminder of what it’s about. His former lawyer Michael Cohen already went to prison for his involvement in this case.

The biggest problem with these sources you follow is that they don't know how anything works - they don't know how these offices operate based on their structures and missions. Ignorance breeds conspiracy.

Nor does their audience. And they KNOW their audience will take NO TIME in investigating just how things work. They would rather take someone elses word for it, regardless of credentials. Then adopt the information as truth.

You might be too kind - I think they may know exactly, but choose to lie to rile up people like SFL.

I don't know, I think many of them are genuinely ignorant - not necessarily that they aren't intelligent, they just don't know what they're talking about and are completely unbothered by that. I don't know much about Julie Kelly, she seems to have written a lot in the last six years - all from a very definite MAGA conspiracy slant, but I don't know what her background is. Has she ever worked in or around the federal government? Does she have a background in law or criminal investigations? Or journalism?

Here's her bio - I strongly suspect she doesn't have any formal background in any of this.

Julie Kelly is a cooking teacher and food writer. Her background is in political consulting in Illinois as a policy and communications advisor to many elected officials and candidates. After taking ten years off to be a full-time mom, she got back into politics then started teaching cooking classes out of her home. This led to a new interest in food policy, including GMOs, the organic industry, federal food programs and the American food system in general. Over the past year, she has been published in the Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, Forbes, National Review Online, The Hill and Roll Call. She s a contributing writer for the Genetic Literacy Project. She lives in Orland Park, IL with her husband, John, and two daughters.

Trump fined for violating gag order

Judge Merchan also just fined Trump for violating the gag order nine times, this pertains to all but one of the first 10 potential violations.

Trump is fined the maximum $1,000 for each violation, totaling $9,000.

Last week, prosecutors presented four additional potential violations. The judge has scheduled a hearing to discuss those on Thursday morning.

Trump can attend son Barron's graduation

Judge Juan Merchan just announced that Trump can attend his son Barron's high school graduation on Friday, May 17.

Merchan says court has been moving along so it's "not a problem."

How much you want to bet he goes campaigning instead?

it was a subtle, but effective move by Judge Merchan. Completely removed the "UNFAIR" narrative he was touting about missing sons graduation.

Now he has no choice BUT TO GO. IF he doesnt, it will get reported on and start to chip away at his ability to portray this trial as "unfair".

    the move was brilliant imo.

I think it's important to avoid this idea that the judge is making moves against the defendant for public optics and national partisanship. The judge is managing the trial on a set schedule. The defendant asked for an accommodation that the judge declined at the onset, based on court's need to keep to the schedule. After it became clear that the schedule could accommodate the request, the judge allowed it. This kind of thing happens all the time in court in America . . . people are expected to be there but also they have lives and some things are considered important enough to be accommodated if that's possible.

I just think its really important to point out that most of this stuff is simply how its done. The judge is just being the judge - doing the things that judges do.

GSA worked with Trump's transition team before and after he left office. GSA stored massive amounts of records in boxes then informed transition team the boxes needed to be moved.

6 pallets of boxes were transported to Florida in August 2021--2 pallets went to Mar-a-Lago and 4 went to a storage facility in Palm Beach.

There is no question many of these boxes ended up in the MAL storage room. And keep in mind NARA was harassing Trump throughout 2021 for what they insisted were government records apparently WITHOUT contacting GSA to search dozens of boxes in their possession.

    Holy conspiracy theories galore Batman.

thats really what i meant- he showing the general public that THIS is how the legal system operates and that he was operating as any Judge would.

I dont necessarily think his move was "calculated" - i think it was within the scope of what any Judge would do, and in doing so, limits Trumps ability to continue this "unfair" narrative.

Now Trump may report this as a "win" ( as in I was able to persuade him ) but i think his attorneys know better and will probably do all they can to keep him from stating this.

Yeah, it looks like the judge formally held Trump in contempt for nine violations of the protective order ("gag order") and explained that the $9,000 is based on state law, not the defendant's wealth. He also threatened additional sanction for future violation including possible jail for contempt.

The judge presiding over Donald Trump’s hush money case on Tuesday held the former president in criminal contempt over a series of posts on Truth Social that he said violated a gag order barring any attacks on jurors and witnesses and warned Trump he could be jailed for further violations.

Judge Juan Merchan ruled Trump in contempt for nine violations of his gag order, with a fine of $1,000 for each instance. He warned in the decision that he would not tolerate further violations of the order and said "if necessary and appropriate under the circumstances," he would impose "an incarceratory punishment" on the former president.

The judge explained that because the fines, which are limited by state law, were relatively little in comparison to Trump's wealth, they might be unlikely to deter the former president from abiding by the court's order. While Merchan said he would prefer to impose commensurately larger fines, he instead had to consider "whether in some instances, jail may be a necessary punishment."

    • Michael Cohen's former banker Gary Farro continued testimony this morning. He explained that Cohen transferred $131,000 from his home equity line of credit to a new account– which was then used to pay Stormy Daniels. Farro completed testimony before the break.

The next witness is CSPAN's executive director - the purpose of this witness is to validate the CSPAN archival video of Trump making false statements about Daniels. This is how the prosecution properly gets the video into evidence.

    Per feed:

Fourth witness called: Dr. Robert Browning

The prosecution calls its next witness: Dr. Robert Browning, the executive director of C-SPAN archives.

Browning explains he received a subpoena to testify and is a "little bit" nervous. He is explaining how a network pool works and how that video is then saved into C-SPAN's archives.

The DA's office now plays three videos of Trump. One is from an Oct. 2016 rally in Greensboro, NC, in which Trump tells his supporters, "It's a phony deal, I have no idea who these women are."

The second is an Oct. 2016 rally in Gettysburg, PA, in which Trump says, "They're trying to poison the mind of the American voter." The third is a January 2017 clip of Trump calling Cohen a "very talented lawyer."

Browning validates the videos. After a very brief testimony, Browning steps down from the stand.
