It’s so repulsive to see people cheering for what is basically 80% the same thing as the Holocaust - different end result but otherwise very similar.

Economists have said it would tank the economy and cause inflation - notwithstanding the cost.

Is it going to actually happen or is this Build The Wall 2.0?

Colombia has walked back from the brink of a damaging trade war with the United States, reaching an agreement on accepting deported migrants being returned on military planes, after a flurry of threats from President Donald Trump that included steep tariffs.

Colombia said Sunday evening it had agreed to “all of President Trump’s terms,” including the “unrestricted acceptance” of immigrants who entered the US illegally, after two US military planes carrying deportees were blocked from entering the country.”

Yeah, I think it got to be too much for them when Rubio/State joined with threatening Colombian travel and visas in the US (including Colombian government visas).

"Petro blocked the planes from landing, accusing the US of treating Colombian migrants like criminals – prompting Trump to order steep tariffs on all Colombian imports, a travel ban for Colombian citizens, the revoking of visas for Colombian officials in the US, and suspending visa processing for both immigrant and non-immigrant visas."

It’s also still not clear what the arrangement is - did Colombia really totally cave or did the US agree to some terms.

My understanding is the US agreed to not transport them in handcuffs anymore.
Petro is a blowhard as well, it seems in keeping with his character to try to pick a fight.

Question: Can ICE go into school classrooms and question students about them and their parents immigration status without the consent of their parents or without any other adults present (including school administrators) during questioning?

My sister works as a nurse in a Florida school district and they just got this directive from their principle (after they had a meeting with their district) that it was okay/legal for ICE to do this.

I'm not 100% sure on this but I have looked at it before and I think you have to evaluate it based on two different sets of criteria. In general, an "immigration check" by law enforcement is voluntary response by the person being checked - they can simply decline. If the officer takes additional steps to indicate that it is not voluntary or there will be steps taken for the person's failure to respond, that is a detention under the 4th Amendment . . . and they can't do that without genuine probable cause to believe that a crime may reasonably have been committed (i.e. that the person was an illegal immigrant).

But there is the exception of when they literally check everyone - like at some of the checkpoints on the highway in the border states. Because everyone is checked for documents, it's no longer a probable cause question to ask for identification - and the failure to produce documentation may lead to additional screening.

Schools used to be considered "sensitive areas" where immigration officers would not conduct screens or raids. Six days ago, DHS changed that policy - but that doesn't mean that the officers have authority to disregard probable cause rules. But I don't know exactly what these raids are - are they targeted to investigate specific students they believe are undocumented or are they screens where they check everyone? And how do they do that when people under 18 are typically not legally required to carry documentation? I'm just not sure what's really going on in these "raids".

So just further on this, it is accurate that the Supreme Court has allowed basic ICE immigration "checks" at public places including worksites where ICE agents can ask individuals questions about their status without additional probable cause - but this is based on the conclusion that these are not detentions . . . which means that the person being questioned does not have to respond and can even go about their business undeterred.

Beyond that, immigration officers need either a warrant (or ICE equivalent) or they need actual probable cause, and this is because beyond the mere voluntary questioning, it becomes a 4th Amendment situation.

I highly suspect that these entries into schools are based on existing investigations about specific individuals where there may be warrants or at least probable cause. Otherwise, I have a hard time believing that the voluntary questioning at a public place or worksite rule would similarly apply to minors at a school - but maybe it does.

Fort Worth, Texas – Jason Buchanan, a teacher at Northside High School in Fort Worth, Texas, has sparked widespread controversy and criticism after posting on X (formerly known as Twitter) explicitly urging U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to conduct a raid at his school, targeting students he claimed were undocumented immigrants.

Buchanan’s comments came in response to an ICE post announcing the arrest of 538 individuals. He wrote, “Yall should come to Fort Worth, TX to Northside High School. I have many students who don’t even speak English and they are in 10th-11th grade,” suggesting that his students communicate with him using iPhone translators. He further stated, “The US Government should totally overhaul our school system in Texas too.”

His posts did not stop there. Buchanan engaged in heated exchanges in the comments section, defending his views aggressively. When challenged on another post about hiring practices in farming, he dismissed critics with offensive language, stating, “Yall people are d*mb. Illegal immigrants are a huge problem. Those jobs will get filled again. Sometimes, it has to get worse before it gets better.”

The backlash on social media was immediate and intense, with many users condemning Buchanan for targeting his own students. “The fact that people are supporting him instead of children is insane. No humanity or compassion,” one user posted. Another criticized the ethics of teaching, saying, “I thought teachers were supposed to care about their students, absolutely sickening.”

On platforms like Reddit, individuals claiming to know Buchanan personally described him as embodying the negative traits reflected in his posts. One comment read, “Wow, I went to high school with this dude. I can’t believe he’s a teacher. That’s depressing.” Another user elaborated, “MAGA is his personality and he behaves like a N*zi.”...............

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma’s top education official said he would support immigration enforcement raids in schools to assist with the White House’s promise of mass deportations.

This week, President Donald Trump threw out a federal policy that had been in place since 2011 that discouraged U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement from making arrests in “protected areas” like schools, medical centers and places of worship.

Oklahoma schools Superintendent Ryan Walters said in a TV interview posted Friday that he would help the Trump administration in “any way they see fit” to carry out immigration enforcement, including ICE raids in schools.

“For years the liberal media has been vilifying Republicans for separating illegal immigrant children from their parents,” Walters said in a news release Friday afternoon. “Now they want us to explain why we’d let ICE agents into schools. The answer is simple: we want to ensure that deported parents are reconnected with their children and keep families together.”..............

The Navajo nation is taking steps to protect its community from federal immigration actions, amid reports that some Indigenous Americans have been swept up in US deportation raids being carried out early in Donald Trump’s second presidency.

In a statement, the Navajo nation president, Buu Nygren, said his office in Window Rock, Arizona, had received reports that tribal members had had “negative, and sometimes traumatizing, experiences with federal agents targeting undocumented immigrants in the south-west”.

Nygren advised Navajo people to carry state-issued identification, such as a driver’s license, other picture identification, or their certificate of Indian blood, known as a CIB. “It’s best to be prepared,” he said. “Having your state ID is crucial, and if you possess a CIB, it can provide an additional layer of reassurance.”

That came alongside reports of at least 15 Indigenous people in Arizona and New Mexicohaving reported being stopped at their homes and workplaces, questioned or detained by federal law enforcement and asked to produce proof of citizenship during immigration raids that began last week.

The Navajo nation council speaker, Crystalyne Curley, told CNN the number of Navajo or members of other Indigenous tribal groups that had been swept up in actions was unclear – or which federal agencies were involved.

“There’s a lot of fear, and I know they’re probably feeling frustrated knowing that they don’t feel safe in the country where they were born or where their ancestors come from, and there’s a lot of frustration of them being stereotyped,” Curley told the outlet.

“I think there’s a confusion with other races, maybe just because having a brown skin, automatically being profiled or stereotyped to be in a certain group of race,” Curley added…….

The TV personality Dr Phil joined the US border czar, Tom Homan, in a choreographed immigration raid in Chicago, one of several conducted in US cities over the weekend in what Homan claimed was only “the beginning stages” of Donald Trump’s promised threat to deport millions of people from the country.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) saidit had made 956 arrests on Sunday, bringing the total since Trump took office to 2,681 arrests – short of the 1,200 to 1,500 daily arrests that Trump has reportedly demanded.

The Washington Post reported that Trump’s White House has issued a directive to Ice field offices that they should make 75 arrests daily and that agency managers would be held responsible for missed targets, raising fears of indiscriminate arrest tactics…….

My guess is that Trump is disappointed that there isn’t a huge response by the press to his “raids”. I doubt he actually cares about the deportations, he just wants there to be a huge to-do over it.

I did see a story tonight on the news - one of the three legacy networks, I forget which one we had on - about the fact that Trump was ordering people deported who were otherwise law-abiding and had been here for possibly decades. This is extremely unpopular, if I recall the polling correctly.

And by just going for numbers rather than prioritizing criminals, Trump risks letting more actual criminal migrants escape deportation. That’s what happened before in his first term. Trump was worse about deporting violent offenders than either Obama or Biden, because they prioritized deporting violent offenders and Trump didn’t.

So they will deport US citizens if they are minors and their parents are undocumented? There isn’t any proper way to deport a US citizen, is there?
