This election nonsense by Trump may end up splitting up the Republican Party. I just don’t see how the one third (?) who are principled conservatives can stay in the same party with Trump sycophants who are willing to sign onto the TX Supreme Court case.

We also saw the alt right types chanting “destroy the GOP” in Washington today because they didn’t keep Trump in power. I think the Q types will also hold the same ill will toward the traditional Republican Party. In fact its quite possible that all the voters who are really in a Trump personality cult will also blame the GOP for his loss. It’s only a matter of time IMO before Trump himself gets around to blaming the GOP.

There is some discussion of this on Twitter. What do you all think?

DeSantis presents himself as a meathead. Way too focused on being anti-woke and 'owning the libs.' His lips are firmly planted onto Trump's rear. I consider myself a centrist and he certainly doesn't appeal to me. It's hard to even know what his policy standpoints are because he is often too busy engaging in performative rather than substantive politics.

For someone more reasonable, check out Chris Sununu below. It's a long clip because it's his state of the state address but, imo, you'll get a more meaningful take.

Ok. I will watch him now.

Basically I am fine with an 'old school' Republican who actually focuses on traditional Republican values like limited government. I can even tolerate a certain amount of social commentary (any GOP nominee is going to be pro-life). And while I think the left has often gone too far with some COVID restrictions and the more extreme aspects of 'cancel culture,' I can't stand the right wringing their hands and perpetuating a grievance culture alleging white people are being made into villains, religion is under attack, etc. It's the right's equivalent of virtue-signaling.

Sununu has always struck me as a rational actor who doesn't engage in hollow bluster -- even if I don't agree with 100% of his policies.

Yes. He seems just as you describe him.
Yet in this current age of 24/7 News Channels....and 24/7 social media....can Governor Sununu capture the hearts and minds of more voters than Ron DeSantis?
It seems at first glance I'd be happy with Sununu, but I've lost faith in my fellow Republican voters who amazingly elected Trump and many who seem to still support him.
My theory back then was that the people were sending the message: "We are tired of politics as usual. Others have told us they would change things once they gain the power but they never really did. This Trump Guy.....this guy from The Apprentice....HE'LL BE DIFFERENT. Vote HIM in and our message will finally be heard."
So that's what they did. They voted him in.
Yet although there were many results while Trump was in office that I liked....my 401k was great....no wars in 4 years, tighter control of our southern border....I think it is time for different (non Trump)leadership.
Imagine if you will a debate stage in Iowa. Trump....DeSantis...Sununu....and others To Be Named Later. When TV News Stations present a summary....select soundbites for people who didn't view the debate to learn what were the really important moments....Do you think they'll select soundbites from Sununu?....or will the news recap stories have soundbites from Trump and DeSantis?
This is the reality of politics today.

Maybe you ought to throw in the damp towel of the far right, and just become a staunch Democrat, and start warring with the wild and crazy far left like the rest of us are.

    :ROFLMAO:

You are 100% right. Unfortunately the more reasonable/policy focused candidates are drowned out by those with more charisma/marketing ability.

I just watched this 3 minute 59 second Youtube video on Ron DeSantis. Someone put together clips of what THEY thought were his best moments. After watching this video I see that Desantis has a tough side to him. Strong in his convictions. Nothing I saw in that clip that makes me withdraw my interest in seeing him throw his hat in the ring.

If you want to appeal to independents and moderates, DeSantis ain’t it, trust me. He’s as extreme as Trump in a lot of ways.

Maybe so. But....there are people you think are gonna vote Democratic....but some of those people might shock you and vote for DeSantis. It's called voting your pocketbook.....or buyers remorse regarding Biden.

I don’t think there is anything that could get a moderate to vote for the guy who:

    1. championed a state law making it legal to drive into protestors if they block the road.

    2. cracked down on social media by taking away their rights of association which is probably unconstitutional. If this law is allowed to stand, websites like this one would become extinct.

    3. doing the opposite of small government, he has micromanaged what businesses should be allowed to decide on their own. Whether to have mask mandates or vaccine requirements, or asking for proof of vaccination. This is just completely opposite of conservative thought.

    4. during the vaccine rollout, areas where his big donors lived were given preferential supply. And then after that, he started discouraging vaccines and promoting the monoclonal antibody treatments instead, which are about $2500 dollars versus $30 cost to taxpayers for the vaccine. Turns out another of his big donors was the company who makes the antibody treatments.

None of this is conservative in the slightest, and it’s only a few idiotic and/or questionable things he’s done that has convinced me he’s more like Trump than conservative.

Evan McMullin is a serious principled conservative, I think. Ohio Governor DeWine (?) is also, I think. Heck, I even liked some of what I saw from William Weld. Larry Hogan is another one. Mitt Romney looks good after Trump.

No to DeSantis and Pence and Haley. They cannot possibly get the stink of Trump off of themselves.

Thanks for your post. If he runs then these things will be brought up. At that hypothetical time I can/will hear the response from him or his "camp".
Having heard both sides of the story I will then make a judgement about how I feel about him.

    Who? Who? and Who?
Of course you want the Republicans to "run" one of those guys I never heard of.

Thank you for your good faith response. I was making the point that those qualified candidates have no chance.

They have no chance because the Republican base refuses to push back. People who were shocked that Trump won the nomination in 2016, people that say they don't support him at all... yet would vote for him over literally any Democrat.

If a person wants real change, going along with the flow is not going to accomplish that.

In the same way I hope more Republicans are like me, but they were not at CPAC or being asked questions by pollsters....here's a story on how the loud voice minority on Twitter can give the false impression they are actually the majority...
