This election nonsense by Trump may end up splitting up the Republican Party. I just don’t see how the one third (?) who are principled conservatives can stay in the same party with Trump sycophants who are willing to sign onto the TX Supreme Court case.

We also saw the alt right types chanting “destroy the GOP” in Washington today because they didn’t keep Trump in power. I think the Q types will also hold the same ill will toward the traditional Republican Party. In fact its quite possible that all the voters who are really in a Trump personality cult will also blame the GOP for his loss. It’s only a matter of time IMO before Trump himself gets around to blaming the GOP.

There is some discussion of this on Twitter. What do you all think?

Didn’t think this needed it's own thread, so I'll put this here

At least he was condemned for his statement (he'll still probably win the election though)

Seriously WHYYYY are people still saying this????????

Also, it's a terrible, evil and stupid statement

When someone says something like this (which happens way too often) You don't need to clarify or justify the condemnation by bringing up your wife or daughters, or mother or aunts

100% of men have at least one female relative, including all rapists
    ====================================

Republican officials in Michigan are condemning one of their own after a candidate for the state House made a controversial comment about sexual assault.

Robert "RJ" Regan is under fire for what he said during a livestream on March 6. When asked about how sexual assault is perceived as inevitable and unpreventable, he said: "Well if rape is inevitable, you should just lie back and enjoy it."

The comment has received bipartisan condemnation. Michigan Republican Party Chairman Ron Weiser released a statement saying that Regan should have known better than to comment like that on such a sensitive topic.

"We are better than this as a party and I absolutely expect better than this of our candidates," he wrote.

The Associated Press reported that Michigan Speaker of the House Jason Wentworth condemned Regan's comments as well. Newsweek has reached out to Wentworth to obtain his full statement.

Other Republicans in the state have made their ire with Regan's comments known.

"As a Christian, a public servant and a father of two daughters, I find Robert Regan's comments about sexual assault to be revolting and immoral, and I strongly denounce them," state Senator Mark Huizenga said.

Regan is running to represent the 8th Congressional District. Its former representative, Kent County Chairman Rob VerHeulen, also condemned the comment.

"As a former representative of this district, I am appalled to hear the comments from Mr. Regan. These comments are offensive, dangerous and unbecoming of any candidate for public office," VerHeulen said. "The Kent County Republican Party stands with the Michigan Republican Party and I believe Mr. Regan owes an apology immediately."

Despite the criticism, no state lawmakers have called for Regan to withdraw from the race.........

"Remember that Zelenskyy is a thug," Cawthorn said in a video obtained by WRAL. "Remember that the Ukrainian government is incredibly corrupt and is incredibly evil and has been pushing woke ideologies."

This is why so many Republicans respond that Putin is doing a better job than Biden.

Homosexuality is illegal, protests are brutally crushed, Russia acts as it pleases on the world stage, they basically worship 'masculinity'. They *want* that here. That's their America.

Funny, 'cuz if you were to ask the majority of Russian people (without fear of being killed for answering truthfully) they'd tell you they don't agree with most of what Putin thinks and does. It's not like they actually have a choice in their lives. Dude has been robbing Russia blind of everything he can for two decades now and the Russian people are sick of suffering in silence.

I watch a lot of Russian TV and I'll have to agree with you.

I like Russians, but I don't like Putin and his bastages.

    ============

In three different states, the MAGA forces suffered recent setbacks.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that Democrats will be the beneficiaries of their stumbles, but it does show that the most dutiful cultists of defeated former president Donald Trump have less than an ironclad hold on their party and face some general-election challenges.

In Wyoming, the Casper Star-Tribune reports that a bill that “aimed to end same-day party affiliation changes” died without a vote. “If the measure had become law, voters may not have known for certain who was running before having to register with a certain party.”

That’s a big boost to Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), who would love crossover support from Democrats and independents in her primary against MAGA favorite Harriet Hageman. The bill pushed by Trump allies was designed to deprive her of that support.

Wyoming Democrats, who have virtually no shot at winning in the deep-red state, should offer to stand down, if not endorse Cheney outright. This is what’s required for a cross-ideological alliance to succeed at preserving democratic values and institutions.

A second development also suggests more traditional Republicans are in no hurry to help MAGA-oriented colleagues. In a stunning blow to Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) has declined to endorse him.

While Romney did not endorse independent conservative Evan McMullin, who is challenging Lee, he called him a friend. Moreover, Romney’s explanation — that he does not weigh in for primaries — makes no sense, since McMullin isn’t running in the GOP primary.

McMullin tells me, “I greatly appreciate Sen. Romney’s friendship and principled leadership in the Senate, and I respect his decision not to make an endorsement at this time.” Refusing to endorse your fellow home-state senator of the same party is shocking……….

McMullin seems like a good man. They could do a lot worse than him, well, they have done a lot worse than him for their senator right now (Lee).

Also, I just saw this. Why does the Trump wing of the GOP want to consistently shut down free speech? Why do they think they should never be criticized? Spoiler: they’re much more like dictator wannabes than Americans.

So much this, the R disinformation about Soros is so stupid, and believed by everyone on the right as if it is fact.

The title of this thread is "What happens to the Republican Party now?"
The title's question maybe takes on a new meaning today than when the thread first began on Dec. 12th in 2020?
I'd like to re-spin it: "Who will Conservatives support in Nov. 2022 and Nov. 2024?"
Everyone knows I was so disappointed as a conservative when Donald Trump was the Republican nominee for president. Now unlucky for me, instead stepping aside like every other US President in history has done....Donald Trump is promoting "his candidates" for the House of Representatives and for the Senate. He's heavily flirting with the idea of running for president in 2024. We all know that this is not the direction I want. I'd like to see Ron DeSantis or at least some NON Trump candidate that does not have the negative baggage that Donald Trump has.
In spite of the fact that the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) took a poll and Donald Trump finished first and Ron DeSantis finished second....in spite of that I have to cling onto the hope that since I was not at that CPAC thingee....and a bunch of other non fanatical-regular conservative people were not there....well I just hope that the Republican Party voters will select someone who can appeal to the middle...appeal to the moderates...appeal to independents.
There has to be more regular conservative people like me who are out there....yet we are not reflected in the polls.
Please share your thoughts on all of this everyone.

The thing at CPAC is not a poll nor an election. A beauty pageant to award the most pugilist personality a plack perhaps.

In the world of plack vs plaque, a plack is a 15th century small copper coin bit, a trifle, whereas a plaque is something more substantial, allbeit as equally as worthless, that gathers dust on a wall.

Or an ichor like substance that will fill the gaps betwixt ones teeth if one fails to brush.

Ron DeSantis is commonly referred to in social circles I'm more aware of as being DeStupid. I think he's almost as controversial as Trump. I don't have him pegged as someone who approaches the middle. It seems to me like he's engaged in being a more Trump like than Trump contest with Trump.

😂 Your social circles and my social circles will naturally yield different results-viewpoints since we are on different sides of the aisle. I'm glad you responded @SamAndreas . Were you like me earlier in the winter?...meaning... I personally saw liberals happily escape the protocols of their liberal states and enjoy some mask free vacation time in Florida. Now the states with liberal governors have relaxed restrictions and that is not a hot topic anymore. Yet California, New Jersey and New York are seeing numerous people move OUT...yet the Conservative states of Florida and Texas are seeing folks move IN. I have watched clips of Desantis here and there....as per my usual...nothing really deep...but whenever I do happen to see him speak, I like his demeanor...I like the way he presents himself. IF he was to run for president then we'd all see him on the campaign trail and in debates. That is where the true worthiness of a candidate is revealed. Once I get to actually "know" him, will I like him? Will other Republicans who are like me or even less tuned in at the moment...once they tune in...will they like him?🤔 Time will tell😉

I just watched this 3 minute 59 second Youtube video on Ron DeSantis. Someone put together clips of what THEY thought were his best moments. After watching this video I see that Desantis has a tough side to him. Strong in his convictions. Nothing I saw in that clip that makes me withdraw my interest in seeing him throw his hat in the ring.

DeSantis presents himself as a meathead. Way too focused on being anti-woke and 'owning the libs.' His lips are firmly planted onto Trump's rear. I consider myself a centrist and he certainly doesn't appeal to me. It's hard to even know what his policy standpoints are because he is often too busy engaging in performative rather than substantive politics.

For someone more reasonable, check out Chris Sununu below. It's a long clip because it's his state of the state address but, imo, you'll get a more meaningful take.
