Supreme Court has voted to overturn abortion rights per draft opinion (Update: Dobbs opinion official) (1 Viewer)

Not long ago Kari Lake proclaimed Arizona's abortion law was a great law and wanted it the law of the state.

Now that she has gotten her way, she is lobbying for it to be repealed.

As I have been saying since 2022, the overwhelming vast majority of women aren't going to vote for the man who proudly boasts that he got rid of Roe V. Wade. Nor are those women going to vote for a forced birther politician.

Turns out, republican belief in "pro life" was all just lies to get votes. Who is surprised? I sure am not.

How many forced birthers will do the same about face?

Arizona Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake is actively lobbying state lawmakers to overturn a 160-year-old law she once supported that bans abortion in almost all cases, a source with knowledge of her efforts told CNN.

I was under the impression what started this was an abortion physician suing in Mississippi? You make it sound like the Justices huddled together to figure out what law they want to change next?

You must not have paid much attention to how Republicans have set all this up for the last 50 years since Roe was decided. They have all of their pieces in places up and down the federal judiciary with their intentional manipulation of appointments. They like wise have AG's all over the country and state governments that are poised and have already passed numerous laws that directly contradict any SC president that doesn't align with right wing religious/moral beliefs and have crafted legal ideologies/theories to make overturning precedents as easy as taking candy from babies. Now they're executing the plan to perfection. This is just like the 5th stone overturned, there will be many more.

Also, this started when Mississippi passed it's 15th week abortion ban to challenge the Roe. This ruling was and accident or surprise.

I can't say I have a huge problem with that. That's almost four months. Granted, some medical issues could arise after that period that would risk the life of the mother but I'm guessing in even the most conservative of states there is always an out if the life of the mother is at risk regardless of the time period. Otherwise the state would be compelling you to die.
Yeah, Virginia does have other provisions for the life of the mother beyond the second trimester. That would remain in place even if they go to 15 weeks. Most likely it will end up at 20 weeks when it's all said and done. We'll see.

Off the top of my head, I can't recall what Roe/Casey allowed. I've always thought a compromise would be necessary (although, obviously, the Pro-Life side doesn't see grounds for compromise given their position) so those who are Pro-Choice always had to be willing to accept some time limitation. I think by two or three months someone should know or not from a non-medical perspective.

You should read Robert's opinion. That's probably how the case should have been decided. I'll just post the first two pages. Then read Thomas' that I posted earlier. He's licking his chops to go after all substantive due process cases.

What should be alarming to all the supporters of gay marriage and such is this very fact that these justices didn't have to go this far to decide this case.. and yet they did anyway.

The Christian conservatives played the long game, and now they're going to have their wet dream (which is probably something else they will ban BTW)

I'd think they would have to because it's basically execution.
There has to be a life of the mother exception. I don't see how a state would manage without that. Is there a state without that provision?

I do recall there are states with old laws on the books that might not have that, but I don't know if they'd tweak it before the law goes back into effect.

I think it basically allowed abortion up to the point of viability - but what that means is (was) a bit murky and subject to state law.

Too much religion mixed into all this for it to come down to common sense man.

Yep, doesnt seem to be much room left in this country for those of us who arent religious zealots .

Seriously, im not sure how you even have a conversation anymore, how you even find common ground when you are someone like myself who is a recovering Catholic, who saw heinous things growing up where the Catholic Church literally ruined young people’s lives… And now i dont buy into any of the religious stuff, i think it‘s all one giant crock of shirt.. and yet you have people making laws based on concepts like ‘heaven’ and ‘hell’ and ‘god’.. i guess they’ll have their own relgious state eventually, and people like myself will be forced to comply and act like we believe, or else find another place to live(?)

The next step would be a TX 6-week fetal heart beat bill followed by a LA complete ban even for rape and incest and ban on mailing prescription that facilitate abortions by doctors not licensed in LA. The VA fight won’t end until it’s completely banned.

The SC came to a compromise that worked for 50 years. It’s going to be an interesting next 20 years because that’s how long the GOP will have 5 seats.

This is something that -- outside of the Middle East -- is somewhat uniquely American. Was watching a movie the other day (Troll Hunter from 2010, cool flick sort of like a Norwegian Blair Witch Project) and there was some dialogue in it where the troll hunter dude asked if anyone was a Christian (because trolls can smell Christian blood... good stuff) and they were all like 'nah.' Because most Americans would probably be outraged at such a question I went to look at the number of atheists in Norway and it's something like 60-70%. Meanwhile, in the U.S., they made a big deal about a recent Pew poll that showed a drop of belief in God from 90% to 80%.

And I'm sure it will come as no surprise that most atheist countries are generally more successful in most standard-of-living categories. Then you have places like Japan where the more prominent 'religions' are Shintoism and Buddhism but neither one of those is focused around a deity in the same way as Christianity -- they are more spiritual philosophies than dogmatic practices.

And just checked Louisiana's 'trigger-law' that now automatically goes into effect is from the moment of fertilization. Lol. State's going to lose a ton of business/convention money.

All 3 LA clinics are closed as of today.

There are 13 states with trigger laws and 22 with some form of restrictions that are just waiting for this ruling. There are states (WI) with pre-Roe bans similar to LA but later laws with other time limits. Gobs and AGs are going to pick what they want to enforce.

I hate this board. I never post here. I don't really get how people talk about such issues in a calm, matter-of-fact way. Like the Ukraine thread on SR.com. You should be forking devastated. How dare you pontificate on matters of life and death in such a pompous manner. How dare you not be thoroughly outraged every second of every day. How dare you find time to be okay.

I've been trying to hold it together for the better part of this day. I'm so angry I feel like my skin is going to crack and all of my pain is going to be on the outside for people to see. Do you know what that feels like? Fork no, you don't.

I've cried so hard that I can't open my eyes all the way. They're sore inside my head. I go into a closet and scream at certain intervals. Just so my neighbors won't hear.

When you think about life and everything it entails... To legislate it and to make it so that people must be born, it's the evilest sh it I've ever heard of. I am literally going to lose my mind.

Are you ever so hurt by something, you can't feel your hands? Fork no, you're not.

I hate people and this life so much.

I don't know how I'm supposed to be ok with this. I don't know how I'm supposed to be like YOU. I don't know what I'm supposed to do when I wake up. The world is killing me.

For anyone who can celebrate this decision. For anyone who can discuss it in a calm manner. For anyone who is not devastated. For anyone who is indifferent.... Go straight to effin hell and choke a pitchfork.

I am not sure what recovering catholic means. Personally I am catholic but I don’t attend because of some personal stuff. And I know there have been some horrible things done by the Catholic Church or just in the name of God, but I have also seen some amazing things by people who attend church.

As a country we were founded in Christian beliefs as are the laws we live by.

Dave Portnoy went hard at this decision. It will be interesting to see if this turns away younger conservatives who are more socially liberal.
