TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Crystal Ripolio had tears in her eyes as she walked the produce line at the Good News Outreach food bank in Tallahassee. It was the bags of ripe peaches that did her in.

“We don’t have anything in our fridge,” Ripolio said.

Ripolio and her 8-year-old daughter, Isabella, walked away with paper bags filled with those peaches, other produce, bread and canned goods — grateful for the help she said they desperately need.

Millions of American children are going without extra food this summer, after 13 states declined to participate in a federal program that helps families in need buy groceries.

Thirty-seven states, four U.S. territories and five Native American tribes are benefitting from the program, according to the Department of Agriculture. Qualifying families with children who rely on school meals to get enough to eat are getting an extra $120 per child this summer to help feed their kids.

Ripolio, who has two school-aged daughters, could have received an extra $240 deposited directly onto an electronic benefits transfer or EBT card, but Republican-led Florida isn’t taking part.

She said she has been helping Isabella deal with some challenging medical issues lately and hasn’t been able to work. The extra money would have really helped by allowing her to buy more basics such as bread, milk and cereal, Ripolio said.

“Are you kidding? I’ve been holding onto $17 for three months,” she said, referring to her dwindling finances.

The federal program known as Summer EBT or SUN Bucks gives money to qualifying families who can then use it to shop at grocery stores and farmers markets. The initiative is designed to help feed children who receive free or reduced-priced meals at school, but who often go hungry during the summer.

According to an analysis by the advocacy group Food Research and Action Center, for every 100 children who received a free or reduced-price meal during the 2021-2022 school year, only 11 got a summer lunch in July 2022.…….

Pisses me off highly. And to think, Louisiana was in line to follow suit before the legislature told Landry to sit his arse down somewhere.

MAGA is a “high control” group. We see it daily, but this was a great illustration. MAGA put out there that Kyle was a transgender person, immediately, when he dared to question Dear Leader. Some real North Korea vibes.

Today I learned that Frank Luntz belongs in this thread. This is just … well, weird. He has built a fake Oval Office in his home. 🤪

i was watching a documentary on Charlie Chaplin today and never realized he was banned from returning to the USA in 1952 because he was branded as being a communist. the Right Wing branded him that, today what they would call cancel culture, and it ended with him not being able to return to America.

Watching this, all i could think of is when i hear 'Make America Great Again', this is the exact kind of thing they are talking about. MAGAs would love nothing more than banning anyone from the US (including citizens) that disagree with them. a lot of them have even said it out loud.
The Right Wing still to this day will try hard to brand anyone a Communist when they disagree with them..

Important connections everyone should be aware of.

Charlie Chaplin was caught up in McCarthy's blacklisting of a lot of people in the arts who he labeled as communist. McCarthy's top legal attack dog during his witch hunt was Roy Cohn. Roy Cohn was thick as thieves with Nixon's top dirty trickster Roger Stone. Trump throughout his entire life has spoken with glowing admiration for how much he learned from his mentor Roy Cohn. Roy Cohn hooked up Trump and Roger Stone a very long time ago.

The similarities between what happened to Chaplin, and what Trump and his fascist minions have done and threaten to do is not a coincidence, it's a continuation and escalation of what McCarthy and Cohn started. Trump, his fascist minions and The Heritage Foundation must be stopped if we want to continue living in a safe and free democracy.

DE SOTO, Kan. (AP) — The sheriff in Kansas' most populous county faced no opposition to his reelection four years ago, extending a decades-long Republican lock on the office despite big gains locally by Democrats during the Trump era. Then he took on election fraud as a cause.

The GOP in Johnson County in the Kansas City area is deeply divided over Sheriff Calvin Hayden's investigation for at least two years into what he has called scores of tips about potential election irregularities, with no criminal charges filed so far.

Hayden is in a contentious race ahead of Tuesday's primary election and Democrats are bullish about their chances of winning their first sheriff's race since 1930 in the general election in November.

Hayden's opponents, including the former top deputy challenging him in the GOP primary, contend he has made the sheriff's office unnecessarily political and hindered its crime-fighting.

His public doubts about the integrity of local and state elections track with the rise of like-minded leaders in GOP organizations in Kansas and other states and former President Donald Trump's false narrative that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him.

But local Republican leaders who looked into allegations of election fraud in 2020 say evidence of wrongdoing was scant.

Marisel Walston, the previous chair of the county GOP and co-founder a statewide group for Hispanic Republicans, said she and other local party officers investigated allegations of election fraud after the 2020 election. While they discovered some mistakes and administrative missteps, they did not find any fraud, she said.

Hayden remains undeterred. Asked in a candidate forum whether he trusted the 2020 election results, he noted the official tally from his uncontested race was more than 260,000 votes but added, “I don’t know that that’s accurate."

As in other suburban areas across the U.S., a pro-Trump pedigree is likely to be a political liability in November in Johnson County, a former GOP stronghold where Democratic voter registrations have grown nine times faster than Republican ones since 2016. But the GOP primary electorate in Kansas is far redder and more pro-Trump.............
