I've voted and election day is something like 5 or so days away. That means it's time for projections as to how it goes this time.

Usually I have a good sense, and good track record for being right using the simple time proven system of "who's turn it is". That's the method where one ignores everything about the current issues, and who is running. One only uses who's the incumbent along with the last election's outcome to predict the next election.

Under that simple system this upcoming midterm election is a case of it historically being the Republican's turn.

But this time it doesn't quite fit that normal mode. Trump threw it all out of whack. Republicans seem to be entirely capable of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory this time. So instead of thinking that the Republicans are going to win this one, I don't know.

That's my projection. I Don't Know. I'm a bit hopeful this time instead of being adjusted to the idea that the Republicans are going to win this one for sure.

    :)

I'm unconvinced to this point that he's anywhere near the threat that Trump is though.

My wife had 2 elderly relatives die from Covid, they were huge DeSantis fans that believed his policies were just awesome….so they went unmasked to church for weeks and everyone sang to GOD….because their Governor felt it was just fine to do so…..they both died around the height of the pandemic….so did countless others….

I don’t want this (I won’t say moron because he actually knows better…which makes him evil) evil, vile piece of garbage anywhere near the WH…..

That is concerning. Once these rural churches start giving out this type of misinformation I’m not sure what will turn the tide. I wonder if efforts could be made to reach the pastors, knowing that every pastor will influence many people? Surely not all the pastors in these rural churches are preaching hate.
Yes and no. While pastors are highly influential people at the grassroots, local level, they're also heavily influenced by their own biases and how they consume news. So while they don't necessarily preach hate, they do often have political views that are often misguided.

Having been a former pastor myself, pastors are also heavily influenced by other church leaders. Some have done a lot of thinking and considering their own positions, while others basically adhere to conventional wisdom in their circles of influence.

That said, I do agree that reaching pastors would help make inroads in their communities, but pastors are often distrustful of people they don't know, and particularly people who aren't influential. The best way to reach them is to build strong relationships with them and have open dialogue on the issues. Most pastors love dialogue and open discussions, so simply having a conversation and getting to know them is the way to their heart. Changing their minds is not easy, but it can be done depending on how receptive they are.

I don't either. Be that as it may, he's not Trump. What ideally I'd like to happen is for him to take the leadership position away from Trump, then fork it up himself.

Fine, I think we would all like him to get the karma he deserves….the much larger problem is I don’t trust the Republicans to put someone just as bad or worse on the national stage….DeSantis is a danger to democracy as well, if you don’t see that maybe you need to take your party blinders off…..
    "A danger to democracy"
    DeSantis?
    No.
If Trump does not run as an independent(which would siphon away some votes from the GOP nominee) and IF DeSantis is the GOP nominee, then DeSantis might be "A danger" to your hopes to have a Democrat in the White House.
DeSantis (if elected) would be a president in a 3 branch constitutional system and he would not be a "danger to democracy".

As a gay person, DeSantis is worse than Trump. He will use the power of the government to go after LGBTQ+ people.

He is also more effective and using the levers of government to game this system. Florida's legislature had proposed a congressional map following state law. He forced his Republican legislature to throw out that map and to accept his own heavily gerrymandered map. When those maps were found to violate the voting rights act, he simply ignored the court ruling. This act alone netted +3 seats for Congressional Republican's and may be the sole reason why Republicans win the House.

He is much more dangerous than Trump is with power because he's smarter and more focused. Basically Stalin to Trump's Lenin.

Trump is a danger to Democracy. Why would DeSantis be any different?

Because Trump proved in Jan. 2020 and is proving now that he is an egomaniac.
    He HAS to have power.
    He HAS to have adoration.
He'll do anything to keep all that.
Including throwing Mike Pence under the bus when the capital police were being overwhelmed.
Including doing plenty of stuff that seemed illegal to me.
DeSantis is just a good politician who will not be like Trump was in Jan. of 2020.
    He won't.
Painting him with the same brush as Trump will not work with people like me.
You can maybe get some thumbs up from fellow liberals on madaboutpolitics
........but people who historically vote Republican will not be swayed by your viewpoint.

    *2021

Right now, he looks a lot like Trump circa 2015, except with more power.

So elect him in 2024 and we'll see where we're at in 2027.

Don't forget DeSantis isn't above a little human trafficking for a political stunt.

The similarity to Trump is that the man has no bottom. Nothing's beneath him.

Fair enough. I'll certainly give you that the Florida Congressional map thing is right in Trump's ballpark.

Calm down, I simply asked a question. I have no expectations that my post/opinions will sway you or any other Republicans.

But you are wrong. DeSantis is a huge egomaniac. I will also unequivocally state that I saw and knew what Trump was before the 2016 election. I didn't need 4 years and an insurrection to convince me what he was. Maybe a little introspection from you and other Republicans on the similarities between Trump and DeSantis would help you all avoid the same mistake with DeSantis. But I won't hold my breath.

Thank you for your response. I support you in your realization that holding your breath would be a waste of time ;)
Clinton and Obama and a tons of politicians were like DeSantis is now. Clinton was a governor...Obama was a Senator. People who climb the political ladder all the way to the top have an ego and like to be praised and use their political power.
That is the nature of normal and very successful Presidents.
Trump was/is way beyond that. He knew Mike Pence was a target of his zealots back in Jan. 2020 and I feel like Cassidy Hutchinson's testimony made it clear that Trump did not lift a finger to do anything about it.
Trump is well beyond DeSantis, Clinton and Obama.
Trump is in a unique negative category....all to himself.
This is my point that I am trying to calmly express :)

I do agree he's cut from the same cloth. I imagine he'd be as bad as Trump in the White House, but until he actually does it, I can't say he's as bad as Trump until he actually does it.
