Russia continues to mass assets within range of Ukraine - though the official explanations are that they are for various exercises. United States intelligence has noted that Russian operatives in Ukraine could launch 'false flag' operations as a predicate to invasion. The West has pressed for negotiations and on Friday in Geneva, the US Sec. State Blinken will meet with the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov.

Certainly the Russian movements evidence some plan - but what is it? Some analysts believe that Putin's grand scheme involves securing Western commitments that NATO would never expand beyond its current composition. Whether that means action in Ukraine or merely the movement of pieces on the chess board remains to be seen.

VIENNA — No one expected much progress from this past week’s diplomatic marathon to defuse the security crisis Russia has ignited in Eastern Europe by surrounding Ukraine on three sides with 100,000 troops and then, by the White House’s accounting, sending in saboteurs to create a pretext for invasion.

But as the Biden administration and NATO conduct tabletop simulations about how the next few months could unfold, they are increasingly wary of another set of options for President Vladimir V. Putin, steps that are more far-reaching than simply rolling his troops and armor over Ukraine’s border.

Mr. Putin wants to extend Russia’s sphere of influence to Eastern Europe and secure written commitments that NATO will never again enlarge. If he is frustrated in reaching that goal, some of his aides suggested on the sidelines of the negotiations last week, then he would pursue Russia’s security interests with results that would be felt acutely in Europe and the United States.

There were hints, never quite spelled out, that nuclear weapons could be shifted to places — perhaps not far from the United States coastline — that would reduce warning times after a launch to as little as five minutes, potentially igniting a confrontation with echoes of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

Typically peace is negotiated. There is give and take. Sometimes land is returned or exchanged. Trump will side with what Russia wants. Not surprising. Russia is not an ally. Why would we side with an enemy over an ally.
Yeah sure. It's like you are unaware that Trump was tougher on Russia that Obama. He's not crazy like Biden to keep escalating a proxy war against a nuclear armed Russia.

As for sanctions, Trump tried to reduce/remove, but Congress passed "veto proof"

And you speak of the "unaware" .....its like clockwork with you.

I'm not saying that should be able to keep it. I'm just stating what normally happens in war. Do you know of any countries giving back territory that they took during the war?
We are past normal here. Normally, countries abide to the treaties they agreed upon. Normally, counties abide by International laws and do not invade other sovereign nations for the sole purpose of land grabbing and no matter what Putin claims, this is him taking Ukraine back because he feels that they have always belonged to Russia.

So to answer you question: Since we reached the Information Age, I cannot think of another nation that has invaded another and avoided any repercussions for violating international laws since the UN was founded.

Riiight. Trump kissed Putin azz. Believed Putin over our intelligence apparatus. Praised and praises Putin regularly but he was tougher than Obama on Putin.

Donnie wants to build a hotel in Moscow. That is all he cares about.

If Donnie gets re-elected then the odds are that Ukraine is, at best, partitioned. Then Putin turns to the Baltic states and Poland.

And Donnie and yourself will be cheering him on all the way.

Donnie isn’t tough on anyone. He is a gutless bully who turns sniveling azz kisser when he runs into someone like Putin. Heck, he kisses Kim’s azz in NK.

So you think Trump is gonna talk Ukraine into giving up a large chunk of their territory? or do you think Trump will try to muscle Unkraine into giving up their territory? And if Ukraine refuses any terms like that, does that make them the bad guys?

Sure, Isreal gave back the land after the 6 day war.
Us gave the land back to Iraq and Afganastan... i'm sure there are more, those are just off the top of my head..

To end the war. Sorry to tell you, but Russia isn't giving back all the land they took during the war. From what I remember, land that is taken during war is rarely or never given back to the other country.
Czechoslovakia, Austria, Poland, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, The Netherlands, France, Britain's Channel Islands, The Soviet Union, and Italy all would like to have a word with you.

I'm curious to know how they did this
The answer to your question is in the last sentence of that article:

"The operation was carried out by the Security Service of Ukraine, the Main Directorate of Intelligence and the Defense Ministry, the statement said."

Translating who did it as if that were the same thing as how they did it. Their Security Service would be about like our CIA and FBI.

Wonce one knows who did it, they ought to realize that not much more information is going to be forthcoming, it would be practical to say they used some kind of kaboom thingys to do it.

Maybe a shoe phone was also used.

if Trump is elected, he would help the cause. he would do zero to help prevent it, and probably say how good of a thing it would be.

He would freez the lines, gift that land to Putin and threaten Zelensky if you don't accept, we end all support.

That's precisely how he would do it and then crow "he ended the war"

I see Ukraine doing some offense by moving into Russia.
Now that they have taken area in Russia, and if they are able to hold it, they will get some needed bargaining power. all of a sudden, peace talks have a different meaning..

It's almost 300km Squarrd. More in 2 days than Russia gained in Donbas in a month.

And it's not over, they are still expanding having bypassed BOTH defensive lines RuAF had in that area which is collapsing. Over 300 Russians surrendered most of which are not more than 18-20 yr old conscripts who don't even have training in any sort of combat. Just serving thier mandatory 1 yr
    Russia has a real problem.

NATO was doing a huge favor to Russia by keeping Ukraine from fighting in Russian territory. It's a lot easier to wage war when you don't have to worry about defending yourself. NATO has finally taken those gloves off and over the next few months, more fighter jets will be delivered to Ukraine. Ukrainian pilots have been training to fly those planes for over a year now. Things could rapidly change in Ukraine's favor if they can hold on for another month or two.

i love how Putin is crying foul over this. how long before his cronies in Washington like MTG publicly agree with him?
Where are the reports about Poot'n using tactical nukes? Poot'n promised he'd use tactical nukes if Ukranian units entered Russia, so where are the reports about the tactical nukes that Poot'n used?
