I will admit, I didn't know anything about these these strings of attacks and the murder of elderly Asian American out west. Really disturbing. In most cases, they have caught sub human scum that have committed these crimes.
In the case of the murder of Ratanapakdee, I sincerely hope the death penalty will be sought, although that is not possible in the state of CA.

I have zero idea about any ”push” from the “left” to self-segregate, you may need to explain what that is.

But the word “self“ seems to indicate a desire by people to live where they want, so I’m not sure how that can be viewed as on an even footing with a prevention of people living where they want by one race wanting to discriminate against another race.

The idea that housing inequities are gone because redlining is now outlawed is too simplistic. The article I linked gives a really good outline of the systemic inequities that black people still deal with in housing today. It’s been a self-perpetuating system that has victimized black people disproportionally and is still happening today.

Just skim the article, you will learn stuff you should know about.

The editorial claims that Black-students “need a supportive place” unlike “White people.”

The NYU Student Newspaper defends a student-led push for a themed engagement community for Black students only.

good grief. So, the graduation pre-parties are designed for black students, but are open to all students who wish to attend, it is clearly stated. I’m not sure that they are university sanctioned or private parties, I didn’t want to spend too much time on this nonsense.

As for the breathless hand-wringing about “segregated” housing. It’s just that. Hyperventilating coverage from partisan sources intended to stir up white people. And you have picked some doozy places to hang out on the internet. 🤪 World Socialist Web Site?

Are you just outraged that black students might have some say in the policies of a portion of campus housing? What is the angle here? They don’t deserve any say anywhere?

Just so I am clear, this is good faith dialogue?

I did not spend a lot of time looking those either, I was just trying to give you answer to your question.

I’m trying to figure out what about the housing situation you are objecting to. They aren’t going for forced exclusion of anyone, at least as I understand it. The university in question has done themed floors before for students with something in common, one example given in the editorial was first generation college students, IIRC. A black woman‘s club requested a similar floor for themselves.

So, tell me what is the objection? How is this anything like housing discrimination?

As an example from over 20 years ago, my son was put on a floor in his dorm as a freshman with other science guys. I was worried about his adjustment to college because he’s a bit of an introvert and there wasn’t anyone else he knew at his school. He called me all excited because as he put it, “these guys get my jokes”. A little comfort from people you have something in common with isn’t anything like housing discrimination.

Why isn't there a White Entertainment Television channel or an Ivory Magazine or a Miss White America???????

This has been hashed and rehashed a million times

How often is a white person the ONLY white person in the room? And the room can be a classroom, dorm room or office?

How often has a white person had to think about the mental calculus of being the ONLY white person in the room?

In the 90s my girlfriend was in the running for a job that would have required her to move to a city that had less than 5% black population

She didn't want the job for a variety of reasons but that was one of the concerns

And it wasn't just concerns over racism, it was more practical

Are there salons that know how to handle black hair? are there stores that sell the hair and skin products she needs? Will there be restaurants serving the food she want to eat? Will radio stations play the music she wants to hear? Will the artists she likes ever come for a concert? Will bookstores sell the books she wants to read? Will theaters show the movies she wants to see? etc.

One of her white co-workers said that he'd never thought about that

To which her response was a simple - "because you never have to. because you will never have to"

On a chilly Monday morning in March, Vilma Kari, a 65-year-old mother of Filipino descent, bundled up in her brown leather jacket and headed to Holy Cross Church. But instead of going to mass, she was rushed to the hospital with a fractured pelvis. Security footage shows Kari being shoved to the ground just a few blocks away from the church. The assailant, a man who has since been identified and charged with a hate crime, stomped on Kari's head three times, before leaving her crumpled body on the sidewalk......

"F--- you, you don't belong here, you Asian." Those are the last words my mom heard before a man brutally attacked her on the way to church.

"Are you sure he said that?" I asked. We were in the hospital just a few hours later, and her normally flawless face was speckled with bruises. "Yes," she told me with certainty. "You don't forget something like that."

The seven days between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday are called "Holy Week" in Catholicism, and they are very sacred. For my devout Filipino mother, this year's Holy Week was especially important: It marked the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines. She was walking to a Holy Week mass in New York City when the assault happened.

What mom survived was a cruel and random act of anti-Asian violence that, unfortunately, is all too common in this country right now. She could have been grabbing coffee or heading to the grocery store, she just happened to be going to church. And it could have been anyone—well, anyone Asian—she just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Back at the hospital, she asked: "What did I do wrong?"..........

I've actually been the only white person in a large group setting on several occasions. A funeral, a couple of church services I spoke at and a few social gatherings. And my kids attended a school where they were the only white (technically half white half Asian) kids in the school. But of course, my experiences have probably been more the exception than the norm.

If Elliot didn't say anything as he attacked Kari, would it be a hate crime then? It couldn't be right?

So basically, if you say mean things to someone while kicking the crap out of them you get some extra sentencing. If you, on the other hand, remain calm and quite while you administer the assault, you will be let off easier? Yeah, that makes perfect sense.

When your dogma exists to put people in groups and label everyone, this is what happens. No one on the left should be surprised when a victim class that has been told they are helpless and oppressed, fights back against another perceived victim class. There can be only one and all of that.

It could be. If the person had a history of making these types of statements, or had some other evidence showing that the motivation was primarily racism, then yes, the argument could be made.

Luckily these racists usually make it easy to identify.

I knew this country was screwed when we started using 'the Daily Show' from comedy central as a news source.

their is also a push by the left to 'self-segregate'.
Just FYI: a very very few people on the left calling for something is not a "push by the left" to self-segregate any more than a few Republican Congresspeople being caught paying to diddle with juveniles without being disowned is a "push by the right" to normalize pedophilia and sex trafficking of minors.

It been gaining traction. That how it starts. The left now gets inspiration from the fringe and in a few months/years it becomes common left dogma. I think this will be argued on this very board by the end of the summer after everyone gets their marching orders. I guess we will wait and see.

Farb, honestly, you’re becoming a parody. When we get our marching orders? Jeez Louise, man, you need to take a break from the alt right fear mongering. Its not reality and it makes you either miserable or an outrage junkie. Its ridiculous.

You‘re the only person on this site that knew anything about this crazy theory that you brought up because one college was thinking about assigning a woman’s club their own floor in a dorm. Yet you think by the end of summer we will all be self-segregating?

Don’t you think you’re being a bit outlandish?

Can’t wait to see the right’s arguments for decriminalizing pedophilia and your inevitable defense of it once they send out their talking points.
