Today it begins, Kamala has reached the point that she's the Democratic Party nominee:

There's video from today. this link has video from her first public appearance since Biden endorsed her:

She spent yesterday on the telephone for most of the day. I read that yesterday that she called the party leaders in all 50 states. That would take me three days.

She's renamed her YouTube channel, that's the where to go for video: https://www.youtube.com/@kamalaharris

This is her video on her channel from two hours ago:

To play it, start it, and then move it up to 5:47. This was one of those live videos which don't start at zero.

I've named this thread General Election 2024 Harris vs Trump

Trump needs an introduction post as well, a MAGA suporter ought to write it: @Farb, @SaintForLife , @Others, calling for someone to please introduce your GOP candidate for this 2024 general election thread.

All her policies were on her campaign's website, and several newspapers did outlines of both Trump and Harris' proposals. I find it odd that people talk about not knowing some of this stuff... I did a quick google search and I get several articles about both of them.

I also find it odd that we already went through one Trump administration where the economy did not perform significantly better than under Obama but did increase the deficit massively even before Covid. And then compare against Biden where he came into office with an economy that was halted b/c of Covid and will leave with arguably the best economy in the world right now.

This all gets back to the incredible number of ignorant folks who have no idea that inflation is a global issue.....also old Tampa Joe is showing how misinformed he is by the post....squared.....

I get it Jim. I do. I guess I’m tired of grading on a curve. Especially when it comes to the highest office in the land. The Leader of the Free World. And we are grading on a curve.

Asking for the best and accepting a lot less. But I get and understand your point. I’m not saying you are wrong. You are right. I just don’t have to like it and I don’t have to go along.

I’m not gonna support anyone I don’t think is good for the country. So I didn’t vote for either candidate. I want gonna be part of somebody’s 50.1 percent “mandate” when I don’t support them and am only voting for them because they are “marginally” better than the other guy. It doesn’t work for me. I would rather not vote at all.

So it’s a personal decision. I don’t care who folks vote for. People can decide for themselves. Who am I to give advice. I enjoy the policy discussions. Always something to learn and always interesting to hear the other point of view.

I've been that way in past elections (I voted for Homer J Simpson in 2004 and 2012 for president, and in most Congressional elections until 2016 where I've been all in on anti-Republicanism).

However, I can only do that when I think the two candidates are in the same general range of "Meh, I think we can do better". When I think the difference is between "meh" and "oh dear god, no!" -- i don't think walking away is a great choice.

I get that most people don't view this the same way (based on the last election)... but January 6th should have been a clear cut, no questions asked, disqualifying event that should have been roundly and unanimously rejected by the American people. And it's profoundly disappointing that it wasn't. It's an issue that goes to the heart of American democracy and rule of law. I'll vote for bad economic policies over normalizing that anti-American activity any day of the week.

Well speaking for the aged uninformed, we truly appreciate your patience and forbearance.

Understood. As I said, I didn’t vote for Trump. I wasn’t a supporter before Jan 6. I get how he makes people uncomfortable. I’m one of em. Perhaps not as much as you but I get it. And to be honest, I was uncomfortable with Harris.

But that’s where we are politically. Neither side trusts the other and folks in the middle trust no one and just want government to work. That’s a recent phenomenon in my view. There once was a time when if your party lost an election, you felt like there was a line the other party wouldn’t cross. No one would try to grab it all and shove their entire agenda down the throat of the entire nation. A place where 50.1 percent wouldn’t want to totally dominate the other 49.9. But those days are gone. People only go to DC to fight for their political constituents. The folks who don’t agree and the rest of the country doesn’t count. To try to seek balance or compromise will only get your primaried by your own party.

Working with people is a lost art in politics.

I so much agree with this!!! Why was it ignored?

The funny thing, I have an educated friend of mine (big Trump supporter) who I've been going back and forth with in a "political" group text for better than a year. We've scratched every surface possible. He boasted just this weekend that the sound, convincing victory Trump had just a few weeks ago proves that my crying about January 6th was all for naught.....that the majority of the electorate did not think it was as big of a deal as I made it out to be. A nothing burger. His assertation was not without merit - Trump won. I just don't understand how people forgot what happened that day.

You should update him on Trump falling below 50% of the popular vote. He didn’t get a majority, just more than Harris.

That is on the table as well, IIRC. As is deporting US citizens if they are underage and have undocumented parents.
Pretty sure those things require a Constitutional Amendment. I don’t believe that will happen. It’s kinda like the discussion about the Electoral College. People can talk all they want but it requires an amendment that won’t happen.

The party behind Jan 6th and the party that didn't impeach the man mostly responsible for Jan 6th should have taken a decade or more to recover from

It is beyond amazing that they took back the House, Senate and White House

Why do you think that is?
    @bird

    Bird's Theorem

If Obama was so incensed that Trump won in 2016 had done the same thing as Trump for Jan 2017 not only would he have been impeached (even though he couldn’t have run again anyway) there wouldn't have been another democratic president for 20 years

Who is going to stop them? This is a serious question. Nobody will stop them, imo, and they know it.

You can say you don’t believe it will happen, but as a practical matter who will stop them?

This attitude just gobsmacks me. After everything this man and movement has done - including trying to overthrow an election - what makes you think they are not serious about using the military to round people up and throw them into camps?

The Constitution requires a super majority in both Houses of Congress and a super majority among the states to pass an amendment. It’s an incredibly difficult thing to do.

I don’t think there is sufficient support in either house to pass such an amendment. So my answer to you is the Constitution.
