Today it begins, Kamala has reached the point that she's the Democratic Party nominee:

There's video from today. this link has video from her first public appearance since Biden endorsed her:

She spent yesterday on the telephone for most of the day. I read that yesterday that she called the party leaders in all 50 states. That would take me three days.

She's renamed her YouTube channel, that's the where to go for video: https://www.youtube.com/@kamalaharris

This is her video on her channel from two hours ago:

To play it, start it, and then move it up to 5:47. This was one of those live videos which don't start at zero.

I've named this thread General Election 2024 Harris vs Trump

Trump needs an introduction post as well, a MAGA suporter ought to write it: @Farb, @SaintForLife , @Others, calling for someone to please introduce your GOP candidate for this 2024 general election thread.

    ==============

Muslims in Michigan began seeing pro-Israel ads this fall praising Vice President Kamala Harris for marrying a Jewish man and backing the Jewish state. Jews in Pennsylvania, meanwhile, saw ads from the same group with the opposite message: Harris wanted to stop U.S. arms shipments to Israel.

Another group promoted “Kamala’s bold progressive agenda” to conservative-leaning Donald Trump voters, while a third filled the phones of young liberals with videos about how Harris had abandoned the progressive dream. Black voters in North Carolina were told Democrats wanted to take away their menthol cigarettes, while working-class White men in the Midwest were warned that Harris would support quotas for minorities and deny them Zyn nicotine pouches.

What voters had no way of knowing at the time was that all of the ads were part of a single $45 million effort created by political advisers to Tesla founder Elon Musk who had previously worked on the presidential campaign of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), according to a presentation about the group’s efforts obtained by The Washington Post.

The project, funded with anonymous donations, micro-targeted messages across the battleground states, often with ads that appeared to be something they were not — a tactic the organizers sometimes referred to internally as “false positives.”

With digital spots, direct mail, text messages, influencer marketing and mobile billboards, the overall project was a high-tech experiment in misdirection — an old political tactic that has been sharpened in recent decades with increasingly precise targeting techniques.

Ads tested better if Muslims felt they were seeing a message meant for Zionists, “Bernie bros” felt they were hearing from the far left, and “Zyn bros” felt they were hearing from activists who wanted “a world without gas-powered vehicles,” a ban on fracking and affordable housing for undocumented Americans — policies Harris did not actually support during her campaign.

“The worst part is Kamala Harris talks out of both sides of her mouth,” said one of the ads, which was designed by Trump supporters to look as if it was advocating for leftist priorities like “free health care” and a “break on tuition.”.................

    =============

In 2007, Republican pollster Frank Luntz published a book called “Words that Work.” Luntz had persuaded GOP leaders to use the phrase “death tax” instead of “estate tax” and to substitute “energy exploration” for “oil drilling.” It worked. Borrowing many of Luntz’s terms, George W. Bush won two terms in the White House.

Luntz concluded his book with an appendix of “words and phrases you should never say again,” because they did not work. The seventh item on his list is one you heard a lot during the recent election: “undocumented workers.”

But you only heard it from my fellow Democrats, who suffered a massive defeat on Nov. 5. It’s too early to know why we lost the presidency, the Senate and the House. But here’s one obvious reason: We used the wrong words, starting with “undocumented workers.”

To be sure, we had our own good reasons for using them. Donald Trump spent much of his campaign vilifying “illegal aliens,” as he called them, whom he falsely blamed for crime, long lines at hospitals, and much else. By labeling them undocumented instead of illegal, Democrats signaled that they rejected Trump’s hateful rhetoric and embraced the humanity of everyone who came here.

But in politics, as in Scripture, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. “It’s not what you say, it’s what people hear,” Luntz wrote. And when we said “undocumented,” lots of Americans heard something else: We were trying to deny what people could see with their own eyes.

In a survey in March, 62 percent of voters — including 60 percent of independents — said they favored “illegal alien” or “illegal immigrant” to describe the mostly-Latino migrants who cross the border in violation of U.S. law. And many people who prefer those terms are Latino themselves. “It’s the shoe that fits. It’s reality,” wrote Latino columnist Ruben Navarette, Jr. back in 2012, defending the phrase illegal immigrant. “And, as is often the case with reality, it’s hard for some people to accept.”

Note I said “Latino,” not “Latinx.” That’s another term Democrats should drop as soon as possible. Again, we have a good reason for using it — it’s not gendered, like Latino and Latina. (And it also doesn’t refer quite as directly to a painful history of Spanish colonialism, like “Hispanic” does.)

But less than half of so-called “Latinx” people have even heard of the term, three-quarters of them don’t approve of it, and just 4 percent use it to describe themselves. It’s tailor-made to alienate Latino voters, who abandoned the Democrats in droves on Nov. 5.

And don’t get me started about “people of color,” which pretends that non-whites in the United States share common attributes and beliefs. If nothing else, the last election should shatter that myth forever. To win back non-white voters, we should call them by their names instead of imagining that they are all the same.

Finally, there’s the awkward acronym “LGBTQ” and its even clumsier cousins, “LGBTQIA” and “LGBTQIAPK+.” Don’t know what they stand for? Join the crowd. In a 2018 survey, only 5 percent of respondents said they could decipher the last term. And about two-thirds agreed with the statement, “Adding more letters to the term we use to identify different gender and sexual identities is unnecessarily confusing.”............

What exactly do you do in the medical field? - because I do too (or did, as I am retired now).

My experience was in laboratory science. I have a bachelor degree level background in human biology and a fair understanding about how hormones work and the normal ranges in humans for hormones. My specialty was in blood transfusions, and the antigen-antibody reactions to blood transfusions.
    I’m an NP

And you think it's a bad idea to follow treatment plans set forth by teams of doctors working closely with patients and their guardians?

    I’m an NP

So you aren't a specialist in the field, yet you want to speak with authority when it comes to decrying how immoral the specialists are?

As an NP you should know better than to make the kind of blanket statements you have been making here. Did you study endocrinology at all?
My endocrinology knowledge is fairly poor because my position truly hasn’t required a vast knowledge on this subject. It was studied many years ago. But when it comes to competitive sports, I don’t care how your endocrine system is functioning, it’s totally irrelevant to me. How was Lia Thomas’ endocrine system functioning when she decided that she was gonna start competing against women? Was it even an issue?? I believe there was a female boxer this past year in the Olympics that there was some controversy around. She was born a female, had all the female parts, but may have had some manly features and I believe her hormone levels were in question. She may have even injured another female boxer pretty badly if i remember right. But, she was a female, and had lost to other females in the past. What I’m saying, is there are no other option other than to make this cut and dry. The boxer had a natural advantage over other females. Is she to be made to fight against men?? I think this subject bothers me because my daughter played competitive tennis, and I can’t imagine some boy claiming to be a girl having to compete against my daughter. And I can’t imagine the disgust of these swimmers who had to compete against Lia Thomas.

Okay, but the Lia Thomas situation was taken care of by the governing body of the sport (at the Olympic level at least). They did this:

“In June 2022, the International Swimming Federation (FINA), an organization that administers international aquatic sports competitions, voted to bar all transgender athletes from competing in professional women's swimming, with the exception of athletes who "can establish to FINA's comfortable satisfaction that they have not experienced any part of male puberty beyond Tanner Stage 2 (of puberty) or before age 12, whichever is later".”

Which recognizes that trans women who transition before experiencing puberty have no real advantage over cis women biologically - no more so than those individuals who have varying hormone profiles naturally. The NCAA probably screwed up letting Thomas swim since she obviously went completely through puberty before her transition. They use a testosterone limit to try to qualify or exclude athletes, which isn’t as good a limit as what is quoted above. The NCAA rules are being reviewed again, and I hope they can make their requirements better suited to the situation.

But the fact that this one person benefited from a loophole by the sports’ governing body doesn’t mean we need to enact a blanket bans on these kids being allowed to play a sport they love. Trans kids have enough issues without this type of treatment. As long as they transition before they experience puberty there’s no real reason to exclude them.

Transgender woman aren't a "boy claiming to be a girl." I wish we could get beyond this dehumanizing and disrespectful language. These are real people trying their best to make their way in the world. Their body and gender are not congruent like it is for most of us. They aren't playing or making it up or just confused. It's not the influences in their lives that are driving them to seek help with their gender dysphoria.

Whatever you belive about transgender woman participating in woman's sports, there is no need to reduce them to a right wing caricature.

Since you've seem to have forgotten much of the physiology of sex differentiations, perhaps refresh your knowledge on the role of hormones (androgen and estrogen) on sex differentiations before making these claims? You should first and foremost remember that essentially the female and male bodies are the same, and that the mentioned hormones directly influence our sex organs development. As many have discussed here, we have androgen insensitivity syndrome, for example. Because the receptors lack response to androgen, the sex organs would default to developing female parts. Further, testosterone plays a part in muscle mass, and if the cells don't respond, where does the muscle mass be influenced?

Now with this very reductive knowledge, what advantage did this olympian have?

I get that this issue of sports participation is rather complicated. I know serena williams would kick the snot out of me in tennis. I also know that testosterone level varies greatly even among males. So how do you determine who gets to participate or not if you lack the foundational understanding of human physiology? Serena Williams would far surpass me in muscle mass, fyi.

    Maher's piece post-election.

I think the biggest issue is purity test, and being "woke" enough.

One of the biggest attack ads comes from a ACLU questionare from the 2020 election. The ACLU questionnare was about trangender surgeries for detained mirgrants. Why is the ACLU asking these questions? Who thought this was a good idea? Why is any candidate answering them?

One of the fundmental questions being asked is "Who gave the ACLU the power to ask these questions in the first place?"

Social issues didn't lose the election though. It was the economy.

I already said how its determined. Male vs Male. Female vs Female. Cut and dry. Why is this hard to understand? In competitive sports, there is no gray area. The issue of sports participation is all I am speaking of. And it ain't complicated. You can make it complicated if you choose, but it's not.

When it comes to this subject, I will call it what it is. I'm sorry. If people feel like its necessary to transition to the opposite sex, that's fine. Absolutely no issue with this. But when your decisions affect other people's dreams and aspirations, then i have a problem. If you are a man that has transitioned to a woman, at least have the decency to stay in your lane and not affect cis women's lives. I will call you a girl, or whatever name you want to be called. But don't ask me to dismiss your true gender. Woman have worked to hard to get where they are today, and Im shocked more women don't speak out on this. There are a few that do, but most are silenced. You may call me transphobic, but that is not the case. I am for the freedom of all humans to live their lives as they see fit. I know this sounds cruel, but, it is what it is.

Translation: you trans people can do whatever you want…unless I tell you that you can’t. Thanks for clearing that up.

Nobody gives the ACLU the power to put out surveys. They can put out whatever survey they want.

No, it wasn’t the economy. It was stupidity about the economy due to, sorry, but it is true, perception. And it most certainly was racism, misogyny and laziness (laziness is always a big factor in elections in this country).

I believe the best place to determine when a trans athlete is allowed to compete in women's sports is at the governing body level for a given sport.

It is not something that belongs in the hands of politicians.

This is not a problem that needs to be fixed.

This is an issue that is going to become more and more prevalent and needs to be addressed by everyone impacted in the fairest way possible.

    Won’t argue that.

I do doubt that it will become more than just an occasional issue. There simply is not and, imo, won’t be a lot of trans athletes. The reason it is hot button now is that it is new. New can be frightening.
