Today it begins, Kamala has reached the point that she's the Democratic Party nominee:

She spent yesterday on the telephone for most of the day. I read that yesterday that she called the party leaders in all 50 states. That would take me three days.

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (AP) — Pope Francis on Friday slammed both U.S. presidential candidates for what he called anti-life policies on abortion and migration, and he advised American Catholics to choose who they think is the “lesser evil” in the upcoming U.S. elections.

“Both are against life, be it the one who kicks out migrants, or be it the one who kills babies,″ Francis said.

The Argentine Jesuit was asked to provide counsel to American Catholic voters during an airborne news conference while he flew back to Rome from his four-nation tour through Asia. Francis stressed that he is not an American and would not be voting.

Neither Republican candidate Donald Trump nor the Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris, was mentioned by name.

But Francis nevertheless expressed himself in stark terms when asked to weigh in on their positions on two hot-button issues in the U.S. election — abortion and migration — that are also of major concern to the Catholic Church.

Francis has made the plight of migrants a priority of his pontificate and speaks out emphatically and frequently about it. While strongly upholding church teaching forbidding abortion, Francis has not emphasized church doctrine as much as his predecessors.

Francis said migration is a right described in Scripture and that anyone who does not follow the Biblical call to welcome the stranger is committing a “grave sin.”

He was also blunt in speaking about abortion. “To have an abortion is to kill a human being. You may like the word or not, but it’s killing,” he said. “We have to see this clearly.”

Asked what voters should do at the polls, Francis recalled the civic duty to vote.

“One should vote, and choose the lesser evil,” he said. “Who is the lesser evil, the woman or man? I don’t know.…….

…….Another recent study conducted by the Institute for Women’s Policy Research found that since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, the 16 states with near-total abortion bans have cost the US economy $68 billion a year.

According to the study, the increase in cost is associated with a “reduced labor force participation and lower earnings for women,” as well as “higher employee turnover rates and more lost work hours.”

Studies also show that states with severe abortion restrictions have higher maternal mortality rates, higher rates of pregnancy complications and higher infant mortality rates.

In Texas, the state’s near-total abortion ban — enacted prior to the unprecedented Dobbs decision — has subsequently caused a rise in infant deaths.

One 2023 analysis of states hostile to abortion found that those states had 12,911 more maternal mortalities, 7,518 more hysterectomies, 234,376 more cesarean deliveries, over 102,000 more hospital readmissions, 93,911 more neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admissions, and more than 3,000 more infant deaths — all totaling $34.2 million in higher health care costs per year.

Women who are denied abortion care are also more likely to experience adverse mental health outcomes, like depression and anxiety, contributing to an estimated $282 billion in economic costs annually, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research.

In other words, these dire outcomes — in addition to costing people their physical and mental health, often their reproductive futures and in many cases their lives — cost money.

Of course, abortion care is not the only “social issue” that negatively impacts our nation’s economy.

According to one 2021 study, the health care costs directly associated with a single act of gun violence costs $1 billion annually. In 2020, medical care costs for victims of gun violence totaled $290 million.

The short- and long-term cost of mental health care treatment for survivors and victims families reached an estimated $225 billion in 2019 alone.

The cost of a single life lost to gun violence each year? Incalculable.

When LGBTQ+ youth who are not accepted by their family, friends and community, they are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. The economic cost of suicide and nonfatal self-harm averages $510 billion annually, according to one study.

At least it's consistent. The Catholic church is anti-abortion so they consider Rowe to be evil, but also anti-cruelty to the downtrodden, so they believe mistreatment of immigrants as evil. The church doesn't believe in exceptions for rape, incest, nor the life of the mother. Essentially the church believes women should sacrifice themselves for fetuses. At least the church's position should result in neutrality, since they consider both evil.
