NEW YORK (AP) — President Joe Biden begins an intense period of private preparations Friday at Camp David for what may be the most consequential presidential debate in decades.

The 81-year-old Democrat’s team is aware that he cannot afford an underwhelming performance when he faces Republican rival Donald Trump for 90 minutes on live television Thursday night. Biden’s team is expecting aggressive attacks on his physical and mental strength, his record on the economy and immigration and even his family.

Trump, 78 and ever confident, will stay on the campaign trail before going to his Florida estate next week for two days of private meetings as part of an informal prep process.

The former president’s allies are pushing him to stay focused on his governing plans, but they’re expecting him to be tested by pointed questions about his unrelenting focus on election fraud, his role in the erosion of abortion rights and his unprecedented legal baggage.

Thursday’s debate on CNN will be full of firsts, with the potential to reshape the presidential race. Never before in the modern era have two presumptive nominees met on the debate stage so early in the general election season. Never before have two White House contenders faced off at such advanced ages, with widespread questions about their readiness.

And never before has a general election debate participant been saddled with a felony conviction. The debate-stage meeting comes just two weeks before Trump is scheduled to be sentenced on 34 felony counts in his New York hush money trial.

“You can argue this will be the most important debate, at least in my lifetime,” said Democratic strategist Jim Messina, 54, who managed former President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign.

    PRESSURE ON BIDEN

The ground rules for Thursday’s debate, the first of two scheduled meetings, are unusual.

The candidates agreed to meet at a CNN studio in Atlanta with no audience. Each candidate’s microphone will be muted, except when it’s his turn to speak. No props or prewritten notes will be allowed onstage. The candidates will be given only a pen, a pad of paper and a bottle of water.

There will be no opening statements. A coin flip determined that Biden would stand at the podium to the viewer’s right, while Trump would deliver the final closing statement.

The next debate won’t be until September. Any stumbles Thursday will be hard to erase or replace quickly.………..

George is extremely well connected. This is pretty damning statement.

I want to acknowledge that regardless of opinions about the spectacle of all this, Clooney coming forward resonates differently. It’s easier to brush off the elected officials because of power struggles and backstabbing aren’t new in politics, even if this is all far outside of the norm. I can’t think of any immediate ulterior motive for Clooney, though. It’s possible there’s something for him to gain from this, other than a candidate change, but I don’t know what that would be.

That isn’t to say that I assume Clooney has a better insight into Biden’s current abilities than others, but I can’t imagine any malice or selfish interest in his speaking out.

The idea that people can't voice their concern or it will hurt the incumbent's chances for re-election, ergo they are at fault if he loses.

    NO

    NOPE

    NEVER

    I reject that completely.

    That's pure blue maga.

People *can* do what they want. There should be room to disagree about what the outcome of those actions might be.

But if that’s the standard we are going to play by, I can do that.

I was going to mention the former there, I remember reading how in the debate's aftermath some Democrats were surprised/frustrated that they weren't hearing from Biden directly.

I don't know who he has and has not had meetings with inside the party in the time since (outside of the group of governors), but I would not be surprised at all if it's being controlled in order to prevent an elected Democrat from meeting with him and immediately coming with "yeah, I saw it firsthand and we have to make a change."

He’s had meetings with elected officials, though, and by all accounts, it’s business as usual in the White House and on the campaign trail.

I asked but not sure there was an answer; has Biden met with party members and officials who have come away from those meetings publicly declaring he must drop out? I know he’s had meetings where people have said they stand with him afterwards, but not sure if the opposite has happened?

I can’t think of any immediate ulterior motive for Clooney,
I cannot vouch for this but it was on Twitter that Biden had recently angered Clooney and his wife. I don’t know if this is true or not.

A week or two before the debate Clooney held a fundraiser for Biden with Obama. At that fundraiser, Biden was as bad as he was at the debate.

Nope... This is the real reason for Clooneys actions

Clooney just helped raise millions of dollars for Biden two weeks ago.

Perhaps what is in the linked article, but then Clooney attended the fundraiser in Los Angeles and joined others in helping to raise $30 million for the campaign.

I guess another consideration is all of these people were interacting with Biden prior to the debate and I don’t remember anybody calling on him to step aside. Did they not see concerning signs before then?

Welll - contrary to the former - I do provide sources to back up my claim. And I do know you have been angry with Biden for a while over the war in the middle east. You have expressed that sentiment multiple times over the last months

They were normal primaries for an incumbent president. There were no shenanigans. Don’t reject the results because you don’t like them.
I don't disagree with you, but during the primaries, I at least didn't have concerns about Biden's fitness to serve 4 more years. If the Biden people saw during the debate was evident then, the process may have played out much differently.

Agreed. But apart from the people who have always thought he was too old, I just can’t recall anybody in the know raising alarms. I also don’t remember anything credible leaking between the SOTU in January and the last few weeks.

That’s my point - things have changed. Whether his decline was hidden, or happened recently, we’re in a new situation.

My guess is that the people in the know were hoping he'd manage to pull it together enough to have a solid debate or two and that that would ease voter concerns and then they could move on - and the party went along, hoping they were correct.

    Just didn't go that way.
