Technically they haven't. At best (or worst) this is one justice offering a clarification on a ruling that already went against the Republicans. SCOTUS already said they wouldn't override the PA supreme court ruling on this issue.

Well, Alito telling them to do what they're already doing is redundant. But...I really think this is his way of telling Trump not to go there in terms of Trump thinking he can pull them into litigating the election.

They had previously tabled this iirc, and just getting it out the way now.

This is my thinking. SCOTUS already deferred to the PA Supreme Court on this issue.

Think about it. Elections are governed by state law. They got involved in the 2000 election on equal protection grounds based on different treatment of votes between counties in the same state. And in 2000, it came down to only ONE state, and the margin in FL in 2000 was less than 1,000. Right now, there are multiple states where Biden is winning by tens of thousands of votes. The way this is trending, the SC isn't changing this, and they aren't likely to even touch it.

I have had had the same convo with my cousin. Trump was dumb to admit his strategy months in advance. The secretaries of state in swing states have this vote on lock down. It's airtight.
