    Frankly, I'm completely ignorant when it comes to the Critical Race Theory curriculum. What is it, where does it come from, and is it legitimate? Has anyone here read it and maybe give a quick summary?

    If this has been covered in another thread, then I missed it.

    Sounds about right from Ted Cruz

    and his quote about school boards is what this is (and has always been about) a hot button, red meat issue to amp up outrage and get people to the polls
    ================
    ….."Together, I think we can defeat Critical Race Theory in our schools and make sure that students learn the true history of America—the story of American greatness," Cruz says in the e-book…..

    Anyone trying to download the book must provide their email and will be met with a request for donations. "Please give today to help train more conservatives to stop Critical Race Theory in its tracks," the request says.

    Cruz's e-book teaches conservatives how to "spot CRT concepts" in K-12 curricula by looking for "buzzwords" like "white privilege," " systemic racism" and "equity."

    He focuses on "equity," a word Merriam-Webster dictionary defines as "fairness or justice in the way people are treated." Cruz argues that CRT rejects equality and instead demands "equity."

    "You see, to Critical Race theorists, in order to achieve equity, local and federal government policies must dis-
    criminate so that the same results are achieved by all races," Cruz writes. "If policies don't meet that standard, CRT considers them racist policies."….

    "The conservative parents were able to band together to fight this, and they got three times as many people to show up and vote in the school board elections than usually vote. And guess what—they won the school board elections about 70 to 30—a huge margin," Cruz wrote. "That's what happens when we have grassroots leaders like you pushing back against Critical Race Theory.".

    Fordham University School of Law professor, Tanya Katerí Hernández, who has taught CRT for 25 years, described the topic to Insider as an analysis of legal jurisprudence that examines how advances in civil rights laws were undermined and have in many ways led to disenchantment with a colorblind approach to dealing with racism. People think "it's part of an anti-whiteness mode of analysis or a racial hate platform," she said, adding that that's "completely untrue."…….

    What I like about that article is it links the right wings obsession with CRT to the New York Times Magazine's 1619 Project. I've not seen enough being written about that link which for me is an obvious link.

    It's a slight of hand the right wing are using, they want to discredit that 1619 project without using the name of it because that would lead to people looking it up and reading it. The 1619 project is accessible to most readers. So they refer to their issue as being CRT, which if people look it up they encounter academic discussions which fly over the heads of most people who do not make a life study of that academic field.

    yep, I recall a year-ish ago Tom Cotton saying "slavery was a necessary evil"

    and also, republicans tried to counter 1619 with a 1776 report.

    here is a link to the actual "document"

    Well, he is not wrong. That is exactly what the founders wrestled with and described the situation during the founding. The federalist papers back that up as well as the very possible situation of the new england states succeeding from the new country to form their own non-slavery confederacy.

    I'm sure we'll see more of these lawsuits as time goes on
    =================================

    Escalating the conflict over the teaching of race, the American Federation of Teachers’ New Hampshire affiliate filed a lawsuit Monday charging that the state’s new law, restricting certain lessons, is unconstitutionally vague and an abridgment of free speech.

    The New Hampshire law, signed over the summer, bans public schools from teaching that one’s race, sex or other characteristics are “inherently superior” to others, or that people are inherently racist, sexist or oppressive on account of their race, sex or other characteristics.

    Parents or others who believe the teachers are in violation may sue school districts in court or file complaints with the state, which may discipline teachers. A conservative group called Moms for Liberty tweeted that it would pay $500 to the first person who “successfully catches a public school teacher breaking this law.”

    AFT New Hampshire President Deb Howes said in a statement that the law had frightened teachers who worry they may be targeted even if they are not breaking the law. “Educators are terrified of losing their teaching license over simply trying to teach,” she said.

    A spokeswoman for the state’s education department declined to comment............

    More Lawsuits
    ==========
    More teachers have sued New Hampshire officials over the "Prohibition on Teaching Discrimination" law, with a second lawsuit filed Monday over the new anti-discrimination law.

    The law bans educators from teaching children they are inferior, racist, sexist or oppressive by way of their race, gender or other characteristics. The "Right to Freedom from Discrimination in Public Workplaces and Education" bans training sessions or programs that teach one group has "natural biological, or innate characteristics as opposed to apparent or accidental characteristics" that cause them to be inferior, racist, sexist or oppressive.

    The suit says that educators are confused about what they can legally teach and train, and risk losing their jobs if they unknowingly violate the law. It also asks the court to proclaim the law unconstitutional and prohibits its implementation, and is similar to a lawsuit filed by the AFT-New Hampshire union, three high schools teachers, and two parents last week.............

    Is this just 'real' history being taught to 8 year olds? We have to support this if we support CRT, correct? History will history I guess.

    "They are traumatized. One parent said that their child was worried the teacher in question was hiding at their house. Children are having nightmares and generally having a very hard time," she said.

    She said the child who was told to play Hitler is "not doing well at all."

    The mother said the librarian who gave the lesson instructed the students not to tell their parents. She said the kids told their homeroom teacher who reported the incident and helped them through the rest of the school day.

    No

    There’s a difference between learning about the Holocaust and forcing the Jewish kid to play Hitler and having a mock mass grave digging

    Theres a difference between learning about slavery and having a slave auction reenactment

    But you know that
    But this never happens. It was just parents being over sensitive and falling for conservative political misinformation.

    I think the biggest take away is that this teacher actually thought this was a good idea. She even told the kids to not tell their parents (something all too often with CRT from teachers) so she knew it was wrong but felt it was her 'duty'. That is the indoctrination part of the puzzle that has parents looking very closely at the public school system in this country.

    Explain how a law against CRT would have prevented this situation, or handled the situation differently once it did happen.

    Remind me again what the Holocaust has to do with CRT? You're just throwing it all in the same pot, SOP from the right wing?

    Isn't racism defined now by power structure? PTD is all the same pot by design.

    I don't know what PTD is.

    Racism has always been about power structures. That doesn't mean the Holocaust and CRT are the same thing.

    A decision by an individual teacher to do something that was stupid and not part of the curriculum is also not because of CRT, even if it actually has to do with CRT. Which this didn't.

    He knows that. Farb evidently has swallowed the outrage porn that all our public school teachers are subversive communists without even stopping to question this outrageous narrative. A person probably should ask themselves about the feasibility of a huge movement of communist agents taking over the entire public school system in the United States before deciding to just burn down US public education, but he evidently had zero forks to give about feasibility and well, reality, actually. This nihilism is absolutely anti-American, and these narratives are being fueled by people and countries that want to destroy America. It’s disturbing that so many Americans are willing participants in the destruction though.

    Yes, everything that you disagree with is Russian disinformation. I thought America was founded on slavery and therefore has to be torn down and built correctly with equity, inclusion and diversity?
    I do get confused because goal post shift every day.
    I don't think all teacher are 'subversive communists'. I would say the majority or rather the most vocal at the top are (teacher unions/school boards ect..). And yes, I do believe the public school system should be 'reimagined'.

    I feel like this is most Republicans problem in general. This sounds like your saying slavery shouldn't even be taught in schools. The American south was founded on slavery, and it was torn down.
