There are plenty of reasons why...

In most states, you need a birth certificate in order to get a government ID. However, there are many people who were born on ranches by midwifes, and no birth certificates were issued. Another great example....in at least one state, you need your birth certificate to get a state issued ID. In order to get a copy of your birth certificate, you need to provide a valid state issued ID.

Since a total of what, maybe 20 people, in the US don't have licenses, we should just allow everyone to vote without ID?

I never said it was happening on the federal level. You asked for some proof that it was happening, I asked if you meant federal or local and you vaguely answered so I supplied the proof that they are in fact voting in local elections.
So now it is 'well, you didn't prove what you said' when I never said anything like that.
And no, I don't like the idea even in local elections, but that is up to voters in that area, would you not agree?

In the New Orleans area, there's a grand total of FOUR Office of Motor Vehicles. Not a single one of them is anywhere near centrally located in Orleans Parish. Matter of fact, the ONLY one that's in New Orleans is spitting distance from being in Metairie on Vets.

So, if you're a single mom working two jobs with just Sundays off, when are you supposed to spend hours on end at the OMV to get this ID? And if you don't drive, you may not be able to get back home on the bus because they don't run frequently enough at night. This is what they are talking about with voter ID laws being racist. Is it just coincidence that the only 4 OMV locations in the GNO area are in white dominated areas? I'd give that a fat thumbs down.

I'll add another thing into the mix. My father was born in 1920 on an army base in SC....WWII vet, we took him on a cruise to Alaska in 2010. He needed to get a passport (as the cruise travels in Canadian waters), it took a letter to his local senator to get the state to issue a passport (over the course of an entire year).....

Fark anyone who thinks getting an ID or passport is just a simple routine process...for everybody....

I do agree but your initial implication seemed to be that something nefarious was happening akin to voter fraud.

Also I will add from personal experience that the wait at the one at the foot of Vets -- assuming you are going in for a new license or something major -- is around 5+ hours. Not exaggerating. I took a number, saw how slow they were moving, estimated the time, then went home and came back about three hours later... only to have to wait another forty minutes or so for them to call my number. That was a couple of years ago. No idea how it has changed in the face of COVID but, when I went, I would say only about half of the windows/desks were staffed with employees.

So, basically, someone would have to take a day off of work (OMV is obviously not open on the weekends) to get a license.

Actually, as of 2012, the number of people without government issued ID was more than 3 million.

Also..the Heritage Group investigated every allegation of in person voter fraud (the only type of fraud that voter ID laws would stop) over a 10 year period. They found 37 credible cases of that type of fraud. During that period, more than 1 billion votes were cast.

So, we are talking about potentially disenfranchising 1% of the US population to prevent 0.0000037% voter fraud. If my math is correct, that is making it harder for 27,000,000 people to vote for every ONE case of in person voter fraud.
