Nancy Pelosi has admitted she still has not spoken to Joe Biden since her crucial intervention in July led to his decision to drop out of the presidential race, following a disastrously frail performance in a debate against Donald Trump.

The former speaker of the House told the Guardian’s Jonathan Freedland on the Politics Weekly America podcast that although she continues to regard the US president as a great friend and longtime political ally, she felt a cold political calculation was necessary after the evidence of Biden’s failing mental acuity.

“Not since then, no,” she said when asked if she had spoken to Biden since. “But I’m prayerful about it.”

She added: I have the greatest respect for him. I think he’s one of the great consequential presidents of our country,” she said. “I think his legacy had to be protected. I didn’t see that happening in the course that it was on, the election was on. My call was just to: ‘Let’s get on a better course.’ He will make the decision as to what that is. And he made that decision. But I think he has some unease because we’ve been friends for decades.”

“Elections are decisions,” she added. “You decide to win. I decided a while ago that Donald Trump will never set foot in the White House again as president of the United States or in any other capacity … So when you make a decision, you have to make every decision in favor of winning ... and the most important decision of all is the candidate.”………

That is sad. Still, even if it was the effects of a bad cold that doesn’t change the fact that perception is reality. It isn’t fair or right but that is what it is. To expect the media to be diligent and forsake their need for clicks and views as well as their thirst for gossip is unrealistic. To expect the electorate to ignore the race to lowest common denominator is unrealistic as well. I would have voted for Biden but it was highly likely he would have lost. Biden was a victim of circumstance during one of the most crucial elections ever.

We’ve said it before, I’ll say it again

History is going to look at Biden’s administration very kindly

WASHINGTON (AP) — There has been a doubling of petitions by workers to have union representation during President Joe Biden’s administration, according to figures released Tuesday by the National Labor Relations Board.

There were 3,286 petitions filed with the government in fiscal 2024, up from 1,638 in 2021. This marks the first increase in unionization petitions during a presidential term since Gerald Ford’s administration, which ended 48 years ago.

During Trump’s presidency, union petitions declined 22%.

President Joe Biden said in a statement obtained by The Associated Press that the increase showed that his administration has done more for workers than his predecessor, Donald Trump, the current Republican nominee who is vying to return to the White House in November’s election.

“After the previous administration sided with big corporations to undermine workers — from blocking overtime pay protections to making it harder to organize — my Administration has supported workers,” Biden said. “Because when unions do well, all workers do well and the entire economy benefits.”…….

Jill Biden acknowledged on Monday that her husband, Joe Biden, made “the right call” by stepping down from his run for re-election as president.

In a candid interview on Good Morning America, the first lady spoke openly about her feelings as her family’s time in the White House comes to an end.

“I’ve had such a great four years,” she said to ABC News’s Deborah Roberts. “I mean really it has been the honor of our lives. It’ll be tough to maybe step away from it, but we’re starting a new chapter of our lives. A new journey.”

She added: “It’s time for something new. It was the right call.”……

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden said Tuesday he was “stupid” not to put his own name on pandemic relief checks in 2021, noting that Donald Trump had done so in 2020 and likely got credit for helping people out through this simple, effective act of branding.

Biden did the second-guessing as he delivered a speech at the Brookings Institution defending his economic record and challenging Trump to preserve Democratic policy ideas when he returns to the White House next month.

As Biden focused on his legacy with his term ending, he suggested Trump should keep the Democrats’ momentum going and ignore the policies of his allies. The president laid out favorable recent economic data but acknowledgedhis rare public regret that he had not been more self-promotional in advertising the financial support provided by his administration as the country emerged from the pandemic.

“I signed the American Rescue Plan, the most significant economic recovery package in our history, and also learned something from Donald Trump,” Biden said at the Washington-based think tank. “He signed checks for people for 7,400 bucks ... and I didn’t. Stupid.”……….

The biggest failure of the Biden administration was forgetting the first two letters in "President" are "PR." I agree that there was "presidential fatigue" after Trump, and I appreciated that Biden wasn't constantly injecting himself into the daily news cycle, but he really failed to take advantage of the bully pulpit to beat his chest about the things he did accomplish.

Biden seems overly concerned with his "legacy". Or maybe it is just the Democrats circling the wagons to preserve what they consider a great presidency?

    Overly concerned about his legacy?

Wow, that was the funniest one yet! Better look at your orange false god.

We’re in a damned if you do or don’t age

You have to feign self-glorification just to keep up with the same act of the other person from the other side because it works on our 30 second sound bite, instant gratification or ignored populace. And yes, I’m being a bit of melodramatic and unreasonable cynic with that last statement.

    Yes, you read it successfully.
I have no false gods, least of all Trump, but if it makes you feel better to pretend, that's okay.
No pretense. You are what you are. Embrace it.

Oh, gee, Biden as victim. Hilarious!

No, simpleton, Biden was a victim of circumstance. He was not a victim, say, of racism or of a crime.

Damn, you are forking stupid. Or maybe it is that you think you are an intellectual. Nah, that would require that you actual are capable of thought.
