Did the ruling block/make illegal IVF or did the SOME of the clinics that preform it, stop the procedure due to very lax safeguards, policies and procedures?
No. It made it likely that any prosecutor who desired to make a name for himself could criminally charge any doctor for the loss of an embryo. Which happens in nature more times than you get a successful pregnancy. It’s monstrous, and evil.

This is such a dishonest take. I shouldn’t be surprised any longer by the treachery of men who want to control women, but it still does. To target doctors and nurses who are trying to help couples have children is the act of radical extremists.

    This is way cool…

I thought it was pretty cool, too. Something tells me if Biden were 10 years younger with everything else exactly the same, he would have a 10 point lead on Trump. He's saying all the right things. Economy is getting better. He acts Presidential. But, damn, he's old. That has to be the only thing holding him back.

As a geriatrician, I discuss the effects of aging with patients every day. I wish I had a chance to give my usual talk to everyone who chortles or tears their hair out about President Biden’s fitness for his job.

First, memory. I explain to patients that there are three components to consider. One is formation. Then storage. And finally, recall. The most common issue among seniors is slow recall. This is the familiar “tip of the tongue” phenomenon, when a word seems to hide or a name won’t come to mind. You know the name, it’s in your bank of memories, it just can’t be accessed quickly. Given time, it usually arrives.

This problem, called age-associated memory impairment, often starts for people in their 30s and gradually progresses. It’s a nuisance but not disabling. If, like me, you find yourself using the term “whatchamacallit,” you probably have it. Don’t worry, you’ll be fine.

Alzheimer’s disease, the most common cause of dementia, is a different story. Those affected lose the ability to store new memories. They can still access old memories in their memory bank and may recount events that occurred decades ago. But they can’t tell you what they had for breakfast because that never entered the memory bank. (I reassure my patients with age-associated memory impairment by asking whether they remember their breakfast. They do.)

Alzheimer’s is cognitively crippling. Losing the ability to form new memories freezes one in time. Those affected can’t make new friends or address new situations without fresh memories. Additionally, the disease progressively impairs other domains, including behavior and ultimately physical skills.

Fortunately, President Biden shows no signs of Alzheimer’s disease. At news conferences, he references new events and obviously creates new memories efficiently. He speaks slowly and pauses to find words like others with benign age-associated memory impairment. These issues are exacerbated by a chronic speech impediment. Biden has struggled with stuttering since childhood, and remnants of the condition have long been apparent in his speech.

Unfortunately, word hesitations coupled with the mild stutter can’t help but affect his public speaking. Biden’s political opponents and the uninformed exploit it, along with stereotypes about older people, to create a false narrative about intellectual impairment.

I take care of many high-functioning seniors like President Biden in my practice. One that I know, who is not a patient of mine, has been my family's lawyer for five decades. Melvin Spears, at 96, recently responded to an emailed legal question with succinct and well-targeted advice, as he always has. When I spoke to him, he acknowledged some concessions to his age. He speaks more slowly, and transportation is a challenge because he’s stopped driving. (He considers Uber and Lyft “a hassle.”) Like Biden, Spears focuses on his work and lets others worry about his age if they choose.

Studies show that high-functioning seniors like Mel Spears and the president compensate for slower reaction time by applying superior knowledge and judgment. The presidency is not a job that requires lightning-quick reflexes. First-hand experience with the successes and failures of U.S. foreign policy over decades, for example, combined with time-tested judgment offers far more than speed in speech or decision-making............

Biden is old, but he doesn't seem to have slipped mentally, because his gaffs and speech have existed since he was young. There are physical signs of age, but if his mind is okay, he could do the job from a wheelchair. I agree that age is the main thing holding him back, particularly because Harris isn't popular, however I also think many voters don't recognize the good things that Biden has helped implement, and Republicans are much better at convincing hyperbole.

I don't discount anything posted here. Personally, I think Biden can and would do a good job if re-elected. The big problem for him, the Democrats, and ultimately the country as a whole, is a lot of regular Americans are really scared about his age. Both in respects to regular decision making and also life expectancy. Harris is not nearly as well supported as Biden, so if he were to pass during his second term, some pause is there with his replacement.

I think the border and his age will be the anchors that can drag Biden down. He has so much else going for him.....even with those two negatives, I'm shocked a candidate like Trump is ahead of him in the polls. Biden has done a very good job post-pandemic. This coming from a Republican leaning voter.

I am also worried about a debate. While I think Biden can hold his own, Trump can get under anyone's skin. Any major gaffe by Biden could be a huge boon to the Trump camp. Very little can be gained by a debate, but I think Biden has to participate in at least one. Stay tuned.

We're a broken country. The constant propaganda by right wing media and Republicans has led to state where 30% of the country hate the other people of this country so much that they're following a deranged idiot because he hates the same people. Another 30% is too angry/confused/apathetic/disillusioned/etc. (pick one) with the current state of things to clearly understand what is happening or what's at stake.

There isn't a choice between two candidates is you actually hope and believe that America can be better than it is today and truly understand the impact this election will have on our future as a country. There's only a vote for Biden to be made.

I've lost all apatite for trying to convince other people of this, you either see it or you're blind to our reality. I don't believe you can move people out of any of these categories any longer, to be honest. I don't know how the election will turn out but I still hope for the best outcome.

You’re on point, but I think the border should become a strength at some point for Biden. Asylum laws are the main problem. That can’t be fixed without breaking the law, and the bi-partisan bill would fix the asylum law. Biden needs to campaign and put out ads about the bill that passed the senate with nearly 75 votes and being held up by the House. I think Biden has a great resume and only his age and associated concern about Harris will be left. The best way to attack that remaining issue is to help Harris grow her popularity. No vice has ever been as important. People need to be convinced that she would do just as good of a job. If he manages to do that, it will greatly derail concerns about his age.

Even Democrats who are skeptical of President Biden’s chances of winning this November usually say he is doing a fantastic job, pointing to the strong economy and the long list of legislation that has passed in his tenure. The implication is that voters aren’t appreciating Biden as they should, perhaps because of his age.

But if Democrats were honest with themselves, they would admit the current state of American politics is nowhere close to what they hoped for three years ago: Biden at 38 percent approval; Donald Trump easily winning the Republican nomination and rising in popularity; Trump leading Biden in nearly every swing state; Arab Americans in Michigan furious with the president and threatening to vote against him in November; and Biden hawking a restrictive immigration plan written with little input from Latino lawmakers.

Biden has failed at the most important task for a Democratic president in the 2020s: eliminating or at least drastically reducing the chances of Trump or someone who shares his radical beliefs being his successor.

Biden’s tenure would be great for a president elected in 1992 or 2008 or even 2016. But not 2020. This presidency is not about passing legislation, working across party lines or fixing the economy. The Democrats and anti-Trump Republicans who went to protests throughout 2017 and voted in unusually high numbers in 2018 and 2020 felt American democracy was under threat, not that there wasn’t enough federal spending on microchip manufacturing. They certainly weren’t looking for anyone to brag about their close relationship with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.), who was an enabler of Trump’s terrible conduct as president.

In terms of weakening Trumpism, Biden has failed in two crucial ways. First, Biden is very unpopular (about 56 percent of Americans disapprove of him), making him vulnerable to losing even to Trump (roughly 52 percent disapproval.)

And that’s despite Biden trying very hard to be popular. The administration has particularly courted White voters without degrees, who have trended Republican over the past three decades, and moderate Republicans, who it seemed might connect with a centrist Democratic president. Much of Biden’s legislative and political strategy seemed designed for those two groups: government spending to create jobs that don’t require degrees and/or are in rural areas; centrist rhetoric and policies on immigration and policing; bipartisan deals on infrastructure and other issues; little emphasis on concerns that disproportionately affect minorities, such as voting and transgender rights.

Early in Biden’s tenure, White House officials would say privately that the best way to save democracy was for the federal government to be seen by the public as working effectively. So a strong economy would be a bulwark against Trumpism.

But this strategy didn’t work. Biden is very unpopular with the moderates and conservatives he has courted and also has lackluster numbers with his party’s base. The president and his team claim credit for the strong performance of Democratic candidates in 2022 and last year. But those candidates kept their distance from the White House and won by casting Republicans as extreme. That was the same formula Democrats used in 2018, when Biden wasn’t yet in office.

“To give Biden his due, I’d say he executed his vision almost exactly as conceived,” liberal writer Brian Beutler asserted last month in his newsletter, Off Message. “Democrats did not botch the implementation of his plan, to the contrary they implemented it almost perfectly. The problem is that, to this point at least, it has been a comprehensive political failure.”

Biden supporters are now trying to recast this presidency as one of massive policy accomplishments that justifies his unpopularity. I agree some important legislation has passed. But I suspect most people on the left and center would trade Biden’s agenda for a president with a 52 percent approval rating who was clearly leading in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin and might flip Florida, North Carolina and Texas and defeat Trump in a blowout. That’s not impossible — a Democrat (Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear) just won reelection in a state more conservative than Florida, North Carolina or Texas.

Biden’s second failing in stopping Trumpism was choosing Merrick Garland as attorney general. Garland, like Biden, is known for his centrism. Under Garland’s leadership, the Justice Department moved slowly in investigating Trump’s role in attempting to overturn the 2020 election and encouraging the Jan 6. attack on the Capitol.

Three years after the alleged crimes, legal proceedings against Trump are very fraught, since he has become essentially the Republican presidential nominee. Judges and juries might be reluctant to act in ways that deny conservative Americans a chance to elect a president who shares their ideology.

Trump’s attempts to overturn the election were a profound assault against America that we all watched. There should have been urgency to investigate him, as opposed to Garland’s Justice Department winning convictions of little-known conservatives who followed Trump’s lead and forced their way into the Capitol three years ago. In my view, Trump should be in jail, not running for president..............

Yeah, people claiming Biden is losing support because of his age are missing the bigger picture. He's got some very real policy dilemmas with a sizeable part of the population.

Eh, I don't think the Garland pick mattered all that much. He'd have the same issues regardless who he picked for AG. Maybe a different AG handles the Trump cases differently, but then, maybe not.

Everyone seems to agree that the main issues with Biden is either his age and/or better messaging on what he's accomplished

The messaging could be better, but people are ignoring what there is proving what Newt Gingrich said as true

    Feelings trump facts

If people feel that the economy is in the toilet, if they believe that crime has never been so bad just going over facts to the contrary isn't enough

and if there had been a different AG and charges were filed in 2021 that would have just fed the 'Biden is rushing to throw Trump in jail' narrative

It was kind of a rock and a hard place decision and other than Trump having an Ebenezer Scrooge moment and pleading guilty to everything there was no easy course of action

That's where the Biden campaign needs to improve. Sure, brag about accomplishments you may have, but also acknowledge there are a large number of people still struggling in this economy. Inflation, while down, is still hurting most folks' pocketbooks. Tell us you feel the pain and what you plan to do to fix it. A lot of Americans need to hear this.

You can’t please everyone, but I don’t believe policy issues are the problem. I think people may associate things they don’t like and blame Biden. Though some on the left don’t like the proposed immigration bill, I think most would approve. I think Biden can blame Republicans for blocking immigration, so I think that issue can go away over the course of this year.

The Arabs are not happy about Gaza because Biden didn’t want to castigate Israel, but he is moving towards that. The US wasn’t going to start a war against Israel over Gaza, because Hamas is a terrorist group that leads Gaza, but that’s what the Arabs want at this point. I get it, but I think Trump’s comments that he wants Israel to finish the job will temper the Arabs’ anger. Like I said before, in policy, there are good defenses for Biden.

Open minded people should eventually come around. Unless something bad happens, if the economy stays good, it’s the cultists and twisted messaging, and age concern/Harris presidency that may prevent Biden from improving his approval ratings.

Yeah, the problem is people saying inflation is coming down often aren't acknowledging that prices are still going up, just not at the same rate as before. Until prices actually come back down some, meaning deflation, people who are already suffering because of inflation still aren't able to recover.

January 6th should’ve led Garland to assign a special prosecutor almost the day after Biden took office. I can understand waiting, since I know there was fear of looking like a 3rd world country and Biden wanted to heal the country, but it was justified. Once Trump spent the 1st year continuing his dishonest campaign, that should’ve been enough.

He's losing on the immigration because he has no real coherent messaging or plan, and the Republicans can and will just let it burn.

He's losing the messaging/propaganda war. This is going to be an anchor for him during the election. My daughter is a firebrand Democrat/LIberal and a big supporter of Palestinians. She's already said she isn't voting for Biden because of that. I imagine she'll change her mind and vote against Trump, but it won't be because of Biden because of how tepid he's been regarding Israel-Gaza.

I mean, I agree if people are truly open minded, they'll usually conclude Biden is the clear choice. But really, how many open minded independents are out there?

I agree the messaging on immigration has been poor, and Biden has been slow to act, but the message today and the rest of this year should become clear that a solution is on the table for the House to act upon and he will sign it. He can campaign on the merits of that bill. He should admit to being slow, but also be clear that his administration has a solution. He should also reinforce that legal avenues are limited without passing the law. If he fails to do that, then it will be a problem.
