There may be legal issues. I saw a post by Marc Elias but I didn’t have time to read up on it. He said Trump cannot legally replace Vance at this point.

Well then he’ll definitely try and then claim it’s a rigged system that let Democrats change candidates but not him.

I don’t know about that but I am not a legal scholar. I think there is a SCOTUS case that supported Biden dropping out that might tangentially apply. I would use the same argument that I think would apply which is if Vance suddenly died there would be a new VP nominee. Parties can basically do what they want. Was Eagleton the actual VP nominee when he got pushed aside?
I don’t remember about Eagleton. I just listened to a few minutes of the podcast where Elias discussed this. It’s not a party thing once the ticket has been submitted to the states. Each state runs their own elections. Obviously if a candidate dies or becomes incapacitated there are generous allowances. But it’s different by state if Trump just wants him off, or if Vance withdraws. And there are some hard cutoffs coming up quickly, I know Ohio is the first week in August because the Dems have to do a virtual vote for that state by August 5 or somewhere around there.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) criticized fellow Democrats for calling on President Biden to leave the presidential race publicly earlier this month, noting that the move hurt the administration.
Moore said in an ABC “This Week” interview with Martha Raddatz on Sunday that while he agreed with critics that Biden should end his reelection campaign, he disagreed with publicly making the claim.
“I had private conversations with the president. And I’m a big believer that when you care about somebody, you tell them the truth,” he said. “And I had private conversations where I was telling the president the truth.”
“I also know that the president deserved better than people who were running around him and going into public and demanding that the President of the United States step down, particularly when you look at the track record of the Biden-Harris administration,” he continued.
“I’ve had a phenomenal partner in the Biden-Harris administration to be able to deliver the kind of results that we needed in Maryland. And so I knew that if he said that he was going to continue pushing forward, that I was going to stand with him.”…….

He was. Vance would have to agree to step aside now that the convention is over and he's officially the nominee. His name should now be on record with the FEC and all of the SOS' offices for ballot printing.
Replacing him would be damn near impossible if Vance doesn't want to go away. It'd be super expensive too.

OTOH, I don’t see Vance doing anything but crumple up and blow away if Trump told him to step down. He’s such a bootlicker.
Trump essentially has to get Vance to step down and name his replacement by Aug 7, IIRC. Or whatever date around that time that OH sets their ballots.

I think Vance only brown noses when he can get something. I think if Trump kicks him to the curb, he will spitefully retaliate. I know Thiel, Elon and the other tech bros will go to war against Trump and Trump can't survive that. Trump put himself in the no win situation that they tried to put the Democratic party in. I think the Republicans who are pro Vance will grind their axes, instead of uniting around Vance's replacement.

I always thought that his son passing away is why Biden didn't run. I also believe that 2016 Biden wins that election easily
As far as Gore goes, I've said this many times, the Al Gore that hosted An Inconvenient Truth would have won in 2000, passionate, engaging, funny, self deprecating nowhere near who he was campaigning
And even with that I think his crucial error was not having Clinton campaign with/for him. Say what you want about him, but Bill Clinton is a great speaker and knows how to rally the troops (as Obama does)
Wanting to distance himself from the Monica Lewinsky scandal cost him the White House

I was listening to NPR the other day going over his political history, and yeah, his son passing away is why he didn't run back then. I am with you, that if he had run in 2016, he would have won. And my how things would have turned out differently for the country (reproductive rights/chevron not overturned etc)

Yeah, of every horrible thing Trump did, his Covid response was the worst, IMO. Around 400,000 more people died than would have if we had a normal response. He never tried to minimize the death, just the effect on the stock market. Truly malevolent.

If Trump was a great president except for his Covid response that by itself should have been enough for his political career to be over
