Biden stepping down - now what? (4 Viewers)

So the trump campaign has apparently sent letters to the TV networks demanding equal time tonight because they claim Biden's speech tonight is a political speech for Harris.

    :biglol:
    What a joke! He’s such a clown.

Both would be very expensive for the U.S. Treasury. This is one of those issues where the fiscal conservative
comes out in me. I'd vote no.

wanna know the cost that it is, which is currently underway, to rebuild the entire electrical grid infrastructure of Puerto Rico? ( from Hurricane Maria- yes that happened 6 years ago )

Your link is to a pro-statehood site that makes the point that the US Treasury is already responsible for shoring up the PR economy. Maybe you meant to link to a different site, or I am missing something.

Yes, was in a hurry earlier. I meant to link the one below it.

The new federal taxes under statehood would cause the US companies in Puerto Rico to flee their Caribbean tax haven causing massive unemployment and increased poverty, while putting an increased tax-burden on Puerto Rico’s ever-shrinking middle class. The local government would have to cut essential services to decrease the tax-burden, meaning an increased dependence on federal programs. We must ask ourselves: what does real decolonization look like? Will statehood resolve the inequities of Puerto Rico’s relationship with the United States? Does statehood grant Puerto Rico the tools to rebuild and become sustainable?

Is there a comparison to say, Alabama?

My thought is to play power hardball, get DC and PR as states that lean reliably blue (because the GOP deliberately insults them every chance they get) and use that boost to get things done. Doing that may well offset the expense of statehood.

I compared it to Ms. My home state and the poorest in the U.S. The poverty rate is three times the Nat. Average of 12.6.

    • In 2021, the federal poverty rate in Puerto Rico was 39.8%, which is higher than the poverty rate in Mississippi in 2024, which is 18.8%. Some factors that contribute to poverty in Puerto Rico include public policies, the education system, and welfare. Puerto Rico's loss of economic advantage in regional and national markets due to congressional actions may also contribute to poverty.
    • Mississippi
Mississippi is considered one of the poorest states in the US and faces significant economic challenges.

    Thanks!

Yeah, they're really poor, but an island state that's tropical and nearer the mainland than Hawaii ought to be able to do well for itself, given the opportunity.

and they are about to have a brand new- state of the art- electrical grid/infrastructure over the next 2-4 years ( already a year underway )

I just saw this wonderful quote about Biden posted by a lawyer online after his speech tonight about ending his campaign.

“Years from now people will still be wondering how a “doddering old man” governing as a centrist, in the most divisive political climate in our lifetimes, in a Congress teeming with buffoons, insurrectionists and foreign assets, somehow managed to turn our economy around, strengthen our global alliances, pass historic investments in infrastructure & combating climate change, expand affordable healthcare and wipe out billions in student loans…and then, when he had amassed a record to rival any great President before him, had the selflessness to step aside for the greater good, for the sake of uniting the party against the existential threat of our time.

Some people might not give you your due, Joe.

For those who know better, there is only one word to describe you.

    Legend.

We are grateful for you…and we will not let you down this November.”

    Classy as always

Donald Trump wasted no time in attacking Joe Biden’s Oval Office address, slamming the president as “barely understandable” and “a great embarrassment to America.”

Despite holding a campaign rally in North Carolina, which ended less than 30 minutes before the president’s address, Trump was quick to blast Biden on his social media platform Truth Social.

“Crooked Joe Biden’s Oval Office speech was barely understandable, and sooo bad!” he said of the address, which lasted roughly 10 minutes.

He later followed up with another, angrier post, in which he wrote: “CROOKED JOE BIDEN AND LYIN’ KAMALA HARRIS ARE A GREAT EMBARRASSMENT TO AMERICA — THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A TIME LIKE THIS!”…….

Biden and Carter will both have a seat at the same table in the next phase of their journeys.

Keep ranting Trump. Make sure you shout loud enough and often enough for everyone in America to hear you.
