I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

    Indeed.

I find the whole argument, from both sides, incredibly stupid. The Left gets triggered by "Wuhan Virus" and the right ups the ante by calling it "Kung Flu". The whole thing is just STUPID.

Meanwhile, Covid-19 just keeps trucking along not giving a shirt what people are calling it and has its eyes on the thousands of jackasses partying it up on Miami Beach.
    Actually agree to a point
    - it’s easier to read from a script and step into a role, than to reply to novel situations-
BUT, the xenophobia is directly leading to verbal and physical attacks on members of the Asian community* - that must be pointed out and confronted

    * no, Jim, I will not provide examples of a MAGA punching a Vietnamese person while saying ‘I’m punching you bc you look Chinese and I was told that your people created the virus’

The tariffs all need to go immediately. Not just the ones involving China.

We’re in no shape to be waging economic war. There should be no political barrier to trade while we are dealing with this.

Joe get lost with that attitude.

How are we gonna get the needed supplies from China since we are offending them and been playing the tariff games.

Because it is high time that we started making our own supplies and not having to rely on China for everything...

But if this virus had of stopped the flow of X-boxes, Sony playstations and TV's, you can damned sure bet that people would be calling for that stuff to be manufactured here.

As for the talk about calling it Wuhan Flu, Kung Flu, Chinese Virus... No person of any common sense thinks that this was started intentionally by chinese people, nor that it's a common chinese persons fault. That is about the same as those people that say if you wear a Maga Hat that you are Racist.

Right. Which is one reason why no-one with any common sense would be calling it anything other than coronavirus or covid-19 (or possibly SARS-CoV-2 for the pedantic people with common sense).

So we're at the GOP justification part (Step 5) of the whole "Chinese Virus" deflection of blame by Trump. In case anybody is unaware, the usual process goes like this:

1.) Trump calls the virus by a racially charged name in order to deflect from taking blame for the lack of a proper early response. Conservative media follows suit.
2.) The media ask Trump/the administration why it's using a racially charged name when there's a designated scientific name.
3.) Trump/the administration claims it's not a racially charged name.
4.) The left/Internet and media react/overreact and convict Trump of full blown racism.
5.) The administration and surrogates and conservative media label everybody complaining about the racially charged names as "snowflakes that react to everything the administration does" and then go on to give a talking point/poorly sourced retort and reason for using the racially charged term.
6.) The left/Internet label all the right as racist and sheep for not acknowledging the obvious.
6.) Society breaks down even more.
7.) It all goes away and Trump is not held responsible for his failures by his followers.

WASHINGTON — Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, drew a backlash on social media and from Asian American advocates on Wednesday for claiming China was "to blame" for the spread of the coronavirus because of a "culture where people eat bats and snakes and dogs and things like that."

'These viruses are transmitted from the animal to the people and that's why China has been the source of a lot of these viruses like SARS, like MERS, the Swine flu, and now the coronavirus, so I think they have a fundamental problem, the Texas Republican said to reporters, saying he did not object to a geographic name for the virus.

Asked about Asian Americans' concerns about racism, Cornyn said, "I disagree. We're not talking about Asians. We're talking about China, where these viruses emanate from and created this pandemic."

The CDC says the coronavirus has its origins in bats and might have jumped to humans through a "wet market," or a live animal market in Wuhan, China.

Swine flu was first detected in the United States in 2009, and MERS was first identified in Jordan in 2012, according to the CDC. The CDC says the first cases of SARS were reported in China's Guangdong province in 2002.

The morons who attack people because they look Chinese are today's equivalent the morons who attacked people who looked Arabic after 9-11. Morons, we got morons!

As far as what to call this malady, arguing about whether to name it by its scientific name or its point of origin is quibbling over minutia.

I'll leave that to the spin doctors while I begin Day 3 of Mandatory Work From Home on a slow-azzed satellite Internet connection.

BTW - this thread is still invisible to me if I am logged in. But, if I log out, it appears and I can go into it, then log in, then post on it as I am doing now. I noted this in the sticky thread about the site issues last week.

#1 on your list should have been the media calling it Wuhan Coronavirus and Chinese Coronavirus with zero complaints until Trump did the same. I've already posted the video showing that and how many viruses are named after where they orginated. China doesn't want to be blamed for not alerting the rest of the world when the virus first hit them and for allowing the practices of eating exotic animals and lack of biosecurity in wet markets.

No. Number 1 on my list stays the same. In the initial stages, when nobody knew what it was exactly, it was called the Wuhan virus. That was fine. It now has a generic scientific name, either Coronavirus or Covid-19 (or SARS-Covid-2). No reason to keep calling it the Wuhan virus and certainly not the Chinese virus.

Trump made a big deal in his oval office address of calling it the Chinese virus and the "foreign virus". That's when the complaints started. That wasn't accidental, it was very purposeful. And he continues to call it that because it has the very effect with his follower (like yourself) that I mentioned in my list.

The only one pushing propaganda is you by acting like Trump is doing this accidentally or is oblivious to the effect it has on his followers. You can criticize the initial Chinese government response to the virus without having to reinforce xenophobic stereotypes and fear of Chinese people. Maybe that's something the right needs to learn how to do so that they don't stoke divisive tensions at a moment when national unity is needed.

Yeah it's not like the Chinese government was trying to say it orginated in the US right?

The left's obsession with trying to say it's racist to call the virus based on where it's orginated is not surprising. Many on the left move straight to the racism charge every single time they see an opening. Can you guys try to change up your playbook so its not so obvious?

If you don't want a virus named after your country, dont create a pandemic. Logic.

And does anyone think the Chinese leaders are reading this thread and getting upset by what some 45 year old loser in Mobile, AL thinks of them? Getting so in their feels that they are going to take their manufacturing of medicine and go home?

Trump: President Xi is a good person, we have a good relationship. He wants what is best for his country.

Media: OMG!!Trump is giving to praise to the worst dictator in the world!! He loves authoritarian leaders! He wants to president for life just like XI!

    Now:
Trump: Xi and the Chinese government should be held accountable for this pandemic. This is unacceptable.

Media: OMG!!! Trump is being so mean to the Chinese government. We need to be nice to them so they will help us with the problem that they started! OMG!!

Very Very tiresome and so disingenuous.

If they want to save small business, like mine, the Fed better back the insurance companies and make them mark a 'government forced shutdown due to pandemic' a reason for business interruption insurance to kick in. Right now, my policy like 99% of the rest of the country, only covers physical damage that prevents your business from opening.
Payroll tax holiday won't do shirt for small businesses.

It's not about what the Chinese government is saying or doing, it's about what we do. You're just deflecting because you don't have a good response and you know I'm saying the truth. You just can't admit to yourself the huge role Trump plays in all of this, so you insist on blaming everybody else except for the person primarily responsible.

If Trump doesn't do what he always does, nobody would be accusing him or racism (like I said, it's more so deflection by way of xenophobic fear but people will call it racism), but he always defaults to the same playbook.

He could stop all this today by just calling it coronovirus, but he won't.
